GAA Urged to Drop
Ceili M usic at Interval
The Munster Colleges
representative on the Tipperary
County GAA Board has called on
the association to change its tune
in relation to half-time
entertainment at major games.
Gerry McDonnell wants the GAA
to bring in top Irish entertainers
such as Christy Moore,Van
Morrisson,Aslan and U2 not to
mention Tina Turner whose hit song
'Simply the Best' he has suggested
could be a real winner on Munster
Speaking at a meeting of Tipperary
County GAA Board, the Clonmel
man said: 'Can I just appeal to the
authorities in Semple Stadium and
other such venues around the
country to dump all those ceili
band tapes.
'I think we should be appealing to
the younger generations and playing
that kind of music is not the way to
go. All you have to do is look at the
terraces to see the ages of those
coming to our major games and,
believe me, they certainly do not
appreciate ceili band music.
*Note:An estimated 230,000 people
attended Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in
Listowellast year while 80,000
attended the U2 performance in Slane
the same week-end, as reported by
Wil/ie Dil/on in the 'Irish Independent'!
