Ontario’s Childcare Industry Health, Safety & Nutrition Get The Facts Before Going Organic By Maria Dicresce, Nutritionist at Food for Tots A s parents and caregivers we all want to feed our children healthy foods that are convenient, economical and most importantly, that they enjoy eating. Grocery store shelves are loaded with items that are labeled “organic,” and most come at a premium price. This poses many questions. Is it possible to create a child’s daily menu that is wholly organic Is organic food really more nutritious And finally, will children eat the organic items we provide The organic movement is comprised of a spectrum of practices, attitudes and philosophies, but let’s start with the basics. What is the true meaning of the word “organic” Truth be told, it all depends on whom you ask. For a food item to be considered truly organic it must meet the following criteria: Plants must be grown without the use of any chemical fertilizers and/or pesticides. Animals must be raised without antibiotics and growth hormones. Animals must be given some access to the outdoors. Sometimes, quite a few non-organic ingredients are added to so-called organic products, yet those products will still be considered organic. Manufacturers are allowed to add ingredients such as hops, coloring agents, casings, fish and gelatin, if they can provide proof that the required ingredients were not commercially available. Because of this, there are three different levels or categories for organic products. They are as follows: “100% Organic” is made with 100% organic ingredients. “Organic” is made with at least 95% organic ingredients. “Made with organic ingredients” is made with a minimal of 70% organic ingredients. Those making children’s menu decisions should also be aware that there are three main myths about organic foods and organic farming. Myth 1 – Organic food contains more nutrients Studies have shown that organic products do not have the nutritional edge over conventional foods. As an example, organic cookies contain cane sugar, which is still sugar and not organically grown. Another example are organic fried chips, which are still fried, no matter what kind of compost was or was not used to grow the potatoes. Myth 2 – Organic farming is good for the environment. It is true that organic farming does not contaminate the soil and groundwater with pesticides and chemicals, but it is usually only about half as productive as conventional farming. Organic farming therefore requires far more land to produce the same amount of food as a conventional farm. It is estimated that modern high-yielding farming has saved 15 million square miles of wildlife habitat. Life Cycle Assessments have shown that, in general, milk and dairy production is the major source of greenhouse gas emissions. When looking at organic milk production, a litre of organic milk requires 80% more land, has potentially 20% greater global warming, releases 60% more nutrients into water sources and contributes 70% more to acid rain than conventional milk farming. Myth 3 – Organic farming does not use pesticides. Along with the various types of organic foods, there are also different degrees of organic farming. There are farmers who do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides under any circumstances, while there are others that use some fertilizers and herbicides sparingly. Each of these farmers would consider themselves organic farmers. Organic pesticides are possibly just as dangerous as conventional pesticides. Organic farmers also use manure in their compost to fertilize crops and this may be more harmful than the health risks from pesticide residue. Manure may contain E Coli, which can spread to humans and may represent a greater portion of the food recalls within the industry. In addition, conventional crops have been bio-engineered to resist the many fungi and insects that can be found in the fields. Today, we are also using far smaller amounts and lower concentration levels of pesticides, which themselves are stringently controlled. WINTER 2008/2009 • ChildcareTODAY 19
