HEMPEL’S REQUIREMENTS FOR A SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATION (LOGICAL EMPIRICISM) Permit an adequate description of the objects of science in question Permit the establishment of general laws or theories by means of which particular events may be explained, predicted and scientifically understood Objective means intersubjectively certifiable, independent of opinion, preference on the basis of data obtained by suitable experts or observations “Operational” means unambiguous application by defining descriptive terms by reference to our operations Fulford et. al., 2006 14
