with global coverage: Caterpillar Marine Power
Systems was established as part of a strategic realignment
of Caterpillar’s marine activities with
headquarters in Hamburg, Germany. This organization
carries the responsibility for all sales and service
operations involving the Cat and MaK brand
marine products.
Caterpillar Marine Power Systems coordinates and
strives to improve all marine sales and service activities
with one simple goal: to ensure our customers'
satisfaction in a constant and consistent
manner. A goal and a promise we point out in the
succinct motto: "Excellence on Board."
Our objective is to reach a leading position for our
high-speed and medium-speed marine diesel engines
in all relevant commercial, ocean-going and

ONE comprehensive line
of world-class diesel engines.
Our strength and knowledge in diesel engines starts
with a combined history of more than 175 years of
experience in developing, engineering, building,
supporting and servicing Cat and MaK engines. Our
continual investment in resources, research and
development ensures the production of the most
innovative maritime technologies for our customers.
Our Cat and MaK engines cover a wide range of
needs, from single propulsion plants to a complete
power package, from auxiliary power to generator
sets. The employment of engines for main propulsion,
onboard power supply and emergency generator
sets varies greatly and extends from pleasure
craft to commercial shipping to ocean-going vessels.
The MaK product line offers main propulsion engines
in the power range from 1,020 to 16,000 kW
and generator sets from 970 kWe to 4,320 kWe.
The Cat product line offers main propulsion engines
from 93 to 7,200 kW, auxiliary engines from 162 to
5,420 kW, and generator sets from 11 to 5,200 kWe.
All of our Cat and MaK diesel engines feature
important qualities which our customers expect in
today's marketplace. These qualities include high
reliability, low operational costs, simple installation
and maintenance, and compliance with IMO environmental

Caterpillar invested nearly $750 million in research
and technology in 2003. Worldwide, our employees
have earned more than 3,700 patents since 1997.
For us, research is not simply driven by market
demands. We look to new technologies and new

lakes and rivers. Marine applications benefit from
Cat’s overall activity in test and development. Our
engineers are supported by Caterpillar’s Technical
Research Center in Peoria, Illinois and Caterpillar
Motoren in Kiel, Germany, with fundamental research
on combustion, emissions, noise, structures,
advanced materials and complete power systems.
Engines are tested in over 100 cells.
We think the reason Caterpillar sells more marine
diesel engines over 200 bhp (150 bkW) than any
other manufacturer in the world is that we have
invested heavily in research and development to
improve upon the natural advantages of diesel power.
New engines are continuously being developed.
Existing models are improved and updated to take
advantage of new materials, new technologies and
new information accumulated from real-world operating
experience. So when the International
Maritime Organization (IMO) announced new marine
engine emissions regulations for today and
the future, Caterpillar had the knowledge and experience
to quickly make the engines IMO compliant
while minimizing potential performance impacts.
