Section 1 Definitions and obligations<br />

Article 1.1 Definitions and abbreviations<br />

a <strong>Universities</strong>: the public and special universities;<br />

b Public university: the public universities in Leiden, Groningen, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Delft,<br />

Wageningen, Eindhoven, Enschede, Rotterdam and Maastricht, and the Open University of<br />

the Netherlands in Heerlen;<br />

c Special university: the special universities in Amsterdam, Nijmegen and Tilburg;<br />

d Institution: the university;<br />

e Association: the Association for Christian Higher Education, Academic Research and Patient Care,<br />

in Amsterdam;<br />

f Foundation: either the Catholic University of Brabant Foundation in Tilburg or the Catholic<br />

University Foundation in Nijmegen;<br />

g Employees’ organisations: the employee organisations that are a party to this <strong>Collective</strong> <strong>Labour</strong><br />

<strong>Agreement</strong> (CAO);<br />

h Employer: the Board of Governors and, with regard to the special universities, the Executive<br />

Committee of the Association/Foundation; the Free University, the Free University Medical Centre<br />

and the Windesheim Academy are part of the Free University Windesheim Association legal entity.<br />

The Radboud University in Nijmegen and the UMC St Radboud form part of the Catholic University<br />

Foundation legal entity. With regard to the applicability of this <strong>Collective</strong> <strong>Labour</strong> <strong>Agreement</strong> (CAO)<br />

on an institutional level, the Free University and the RUN are the employer;<br />

i Employee: the person who is employed by an institution or the offices of the association referred to<br />

under e;<br />

j Employment contract: either an appointment at a public university or an employment contract with<br />

a special university;<br />

k Temporary employment contract: temporary employment contract, arranged either for a<br />

predetermined period or for an objectively definable set of circumstances, the duration of which<br />

is not precisely known in advance;<br />

l Permanent employment contract: employment contract for an indefinite period of time;<br />

m Notice of termination by the employee: at a public university this is taken to mean the request<br />

for dismissal made by the employee;<br />

n Consultation between the employer and local employees’ organisations: the local consultation<br />

with employees’ organisations as laid down in the consultation protocol;<br />

o Employee participation body: the body that is designated as such on the grounds of Articles 9.30,<br />

9.31, 9.37, 9.49, 9.50 and 9.51 of the Higher Education and Academic Research Act (WHW);<br />

p Full time employment: employment for 38 hours per week;<br />

q Salary: the monthly amount established for the employee in question based on the salary tables in<br />

<strong>Collective</strong> <strong>Labour</strong> <strong>Agreement</strong> <strong>Dutch</strong> <strong>Universities</strong>, 1 September 2007 to 1 March 2010
