A Team Approach to
Outstanding Care
Consistent National Recognition Defines Peninsula Regional Medical Center
“I would recommend
Peninsula Regional Medical Center
to every single person in the world.”
Ed Wean
Ed and Peggy Wean in the 3 Layfield Cardiac Step
Down Unit at Peninsula Regional Medical Center
Ed and Peggy Wean of Charlestown, West
Virginia have been summering at their Fenwick
Island, Delaware home since 1974. On June 10
of last year, after a night out in Ocean City to
celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary, Ed
began experiencing what he thought was
indigestion. He chalked it up to overeating.
However, when it hadn’t improved the next
morning, he sought medical attention. Good
thing.
Tests at Peninsula Regional’s Guerrieri Heart
& Vascular Institute by cardiologist Chris
Bounds, MD indicated several blocked arteries.
Ed needed bypass surgery, which was performed
without complication by cardiothoracic surgeon
Nicholas Ogburn, MD. Because Ed acted quickly
and all of the life-saving cardiac services he
required were available at Peninsula Regional,
he and Peggy are today enjoying their 55th year
together.
“It’s no surprise to us that you earned back
to back national critical care awards,” said Peggy.
“In fact, I’ve told Ed if I ever need the same
surgery and there’s any way possible, make sure
it’s done at Peninsula Regional.”
The Weans say they are extremely thankful a
talented and compassionate team was there for
them at the most stressful time of their lives.
“The staff, everyone at Peninsula Regional, could
not have taken better care of us,” said Ed. “We’ve
had many stays at other hospitals and none of
them ever came close to this kind of care.”
hen it comes to providing high-quality health care for your family, no one works consistently
harder than the physicians, nurses and staff at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. And once again, our
awards and recognitions prove it.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center, the 6th largest Medical Center in the state of Maryland by bed
count, has received over 25 national awards, certifications and recognitions in just the past four years for
the safety and care it provides patients and the outcomes they experience.
It validates for every patient and family member
that Peninsula Regional, when compared to its peer
hospitals and even those much larger, continues to
perform exceptionally well. “When dignitaries and
state health care officials visit our campus, they
consistently share with us that they believe we have
assembled the finest health care team of physicians,
staff and volunteers in the region who remain
committed to outstanding clinical outcomes and safe,
quality patient care,” said Peggy Naleppa, MS, MBA,
Dr. M., FACHE, President/CEO. “We were among the
first in the nation to implement an electronic medical
record and the protection of bedside medication
scanning. We brought to Delmarva robotic
medication dispensing in the pharmacy,
implemented the first da Vinci Surgical Robot in the
operating room, and were first to design a system of
electronic physician order entry for patient safety.”
Rehabilitation Center
Most impressive is the numerous patient care divisions that have been recognized (see graphic) for
what they have done with that technology. And often, those awards come with Peninsula Regional being
named the “first” or “best” in the region or “among the top in the nation.” Over time, many other
organizations may join Peninsula Regional in achieving similar ratings, but what should matter most to
all patients is to find the leader who performs consistently well, year after year and remains at the
forefront. On the Delmarva Peninsula, that’s Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
In January, HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent health care ratings organization,
presented Peninsula Regional its second consecutive Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical

As Much As They Mean To Us
They Really Mean More For You
Excellence, which again placed it
among the elite top 5% of all hospitals.
They independently survey 5,000
American hospitals every year, and this
year only 270 in the USA were
recognized with the Distinguished
Hospital Award as leaders in their
commitment to provide patients overall
outstanding care. In our entire country,
just 204-including Peninsula Regionalwere
so honored in 2009 and 2010. No
one but Peninsula Regional Medical
Center reached that plateau in back to
back years on the Delmarva Peninsula.
It’s that consistency-and not just a onetime
recognition-that patients should
expect from their health care provider,
Marvin, Meagan and Braeden Smith with Anisha
Handy, CNA, leaving the Mother/Baby Unit
and a level of exceptional care so many
strive for but so few achieve.
HealthGrades also named Peninsula Regional the “Best on Delmarva” and presented the
Medical Center with 2010 Clinical Excellence Awards in Critical Care, General Surgery, GI and
Pulmonary Care, placing those services among the elite top percentage performers in America.
Peninsula Regional is also privileged to hold Gold Seal certification from the Joint
Commission in AMI (heart attack treatment), Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement and as a
Primary Stroke Center. For all four, the Medical Center was honored as the first on the Delmarva
Peninsula to earn recognition among the best programs in the U.S. For the first three, it was the
very first Medical Center in Maryland, Delaware or Washington, DC to be presented the Joint
Commission’s prestigious Gold Seal. “If you need orthopaedic surgery, you should be choosing
an orthopaedic team like we have at Peninsula Regional that has been collectively recognized
by the Joint Commission for exceptional outcomes and was ranked the overall best in Maryland
by HealthGrades for three consecutive years,” added Naleppa.
Peninsula Regional is also a current recipient of the American College of Surgeons
Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award. Only 94 other hospitals in the United
States can say that. That clearly shows the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at Peninsula
Regional is one of the nation’s best, comprehensive cancer programs. And it’s more than a
single cancer treatment, it’s complete care meeting all patient needs including financial and
support counseling, nutritional guidance and pain management throughout a fully integrated
cancer institute.
Peninsula Regional’s Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute holds the prestigious Chest Pain
Center accreditation by the Society of Chest Pain Centers and has recently been named a
UnitedHealth Premium Cardiac Specialty Center.
That type of consistent national recognition is yet another reason why you and your family
can rely on Peninsula Regional Medical Center for the finest medical care on the Delmarva
Peninsula.
At Peninsula Regional Medical Center, we are committed to increasing the
availability and scope of our services to better serve our community. Here are a
few of the exciting changes being offered among our Centers of Excellence.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center and the ALS Association
Join Forces to Create New ALS Clinic
A diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou
Gehrig’s disease, can be devastating for patients and their families. They often
feel overwhelmed by the enormity of this neurological disease, which causes
progressive muscle weakness that will eventually lead to difficulty speaking,
swallowing and even breathing. Nearly all of these families need help in
managing the patient’s complex, changing medical needs and in making
difficult decisions about breathing and feeding assistance.
Now, the Medical Center and the ALS Association DC/MD/VA chapter
have joined forces to create the ALS Clinic at Peninsula Regional. This clinic
provides patients access to a multidisciplinary health care team including a
neurologist, pulmonologist, gastroenterologist, nutritionist, psychiatrist, nurse
and physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapists. It coordinates
the patient’s appointments so he or she will see the appropriate specialists and
therapists in one visit instead of having to come back on several days, an
increasingly difficult task as the disease progresses. The clinic integrates ALS
support services into the patient’s care plan.
“The ALS Clinic at Peninsula Regional is the only clinic of its kind in the
region, and we are very excited to be able to offer this much needed service so
close to home,” said Sherry Singer, MS, CCC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist
at the Medical Center who has been instrumental in creating the clinic. “Until
now, patients had to travel across the Bay Bridge to have access to a clinic like
this, something that is extremely difficult for most ALS patients to do. By
eliminating the need for lengthy travel, we’re sure we can improve the quality of
life for these patients and their families. ”
The ALS Clinic at Peninsula Regional will hold sessions every three months
on the 2nd floor of the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute, located on the
Medical Center campus. Any patient with a confirmed diagnosis of ALS is
welcome and most health insurance plans, as well as Medicare and Medicaid
coverage, are accepted.
In addition to the comprehensive health care patients receive at the clinic,
the ALS Association provides additional resources such as specialized
telephones and voice amplification equipment. People with ALS may be
interested in assistance with sophisticated wheelchairs and complex computer
programs to help with communication, so the association has a rehabilitation
engineer who can consult on equipment use and set-up. There are grants that
can help pay for transportation, and the ALS Association also organizes support
groups for patients and their families. The DC/MD/VA chapter has a library of
video tapes, books and articles that families may find useful. Families can get
information and support when making decisions about how to treat disease
complications, such as difficulty eating, swallowing, breathing and lung
infections.
ALS is the most common motor neuron disease among adults. An
estimated 30,000 people in the United States have ALS. About 5,000 people are
diagnosed each year. The disease attacks the pathways and nerve cells that
send signals from the brain to the spinal cord and muscles. There is no known
cause and no cure. Life expectancy for people with ALS is three to five years.
New Cancer Risk Assessment and Genetic Counseling Service
Now Available
Studies show that certain cancers may run in families. Breast, ovarian,
colon, uterine, skin and prostate cancers are some of the cancers that can be
hereditary. Five to ten percent of breast cancers are due to genetic factors
passed from one generation to the next. Although most cancers are not
hereditary, having a family history of cancer may increase your risk of getting it.
Certain types of cancer do occur in some families more than others, and
several cases of the same type of cancer in a family may be linked to inherited
gene changes, which may increase the chance for contracting the disease.
Fortunately for Eastern Shore residents who have a family history of cancer,
the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at Peninsula Regional recently added a
Cancer Risk Assessment and Genetic Counseling Service provided by the
Prevention and Research Center of Mercy Medical Center.
In-person consultation is now being provided at the Richard A. Henson
Cancer Institute by Susan E. Appling, MS, CRNP, an experienced member of the
genetic counseling staff at Mercy Medical Center, under the direction of Kathy J.
Helzlsouer, MD, MHS, a medical oncologist and nationally-recognized clinical
epidemiologist.
Individuals may benefit from risk assessment and genetic counseling if any
one of the following apply:
• They have a close relative with the same or related cancer, especially if
cancer occurred before age 50
• They have had more than one type of cancer
• They are of Eastern European Jewish Ancestry with a family history of
cancer
• They have a family history of any rare cancer
• They have a relative who is known to have a genetic mutation that can
increase the risk of cancer
• They are considering chemoprevention for cancer based on family history
or other risk factors (e.g. atypical hyperplasia of the breast)
The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute is the only cancer facility in the
region to offer genetic counseling. For more information or to schedule an
appointment for call 1-866-9-CANCER (866-922-6237).
breast and ovarian cancer
risk, runs in her family.

eMedcon - Connecting the Eastern Shore’s Cardiology
Departments for Improved Quality of Care
Cardiologists and medical imaging specialists at Peninsula Regional
Medical Center’s Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute now have the capability to
quickly and efficiently exchange patient images and data with three other
Eastern Shore hospitals through the use of a unique Web application called
eMedcon by McKesson. This technology, which has been utilized for several
years between the Medical Center and Washington Hospital Center in
Washington, DC, has recently been installed in the cardiology departments of
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Shore Health System’s Memorial
Hospital in Easton and Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Delaware, enabling
enhanced communication among the facilities and expedited patient care.
With eMedcon, referring physicians from these hospitals can now consult
with each other and exchange patient images online over a customized, secure
website in an e-mail like exchange. This software-based digital image transfer
system allows digital images to be compressed while maintaining diagnostic
quality. The images are then transferred to multiple sites over the Internet at a
relatively low cost, allowing users to view and exchange cardiac images and
reports from anywhere in the world with internet access.
eMedcon eliminates the time and distance limitations that occur with
traditional data exchange between health care professionals. By eliminating
the need to download images and data onto a CD, send the CD to the other
facility by carrier, wait for the information to be viewed and then coordinate
phone calls between the specialists to validate a diagnosis, eMedcon allows
the information to be exchanged in a matter of seconds over the internet,
resulting in faster diagnosis and patient transfer to the other facility if
necessary. The outcome is unmatched productivity and greater throughput in
the facilities’ cardiology departments, and better, safer decisions for improved
patient care.
February is American Heart Month
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the
United States. In 2005, 652,091 people died of heart disease. This attributed to
27.1% of all deaths in the United States that year - 49.5% of deaths were men
and 50.5% were women.
There are nine main risk factors for heart disease in men and women, some
which can be improved with positive lifestyle changes and others that can not
be changed. These risk factors include high cholesterol levels, high blood
pressure, diabetes mellitus, tobacco use, diet, physical inactivity, obesity,
alcohol use and heredity.
Signs and symptoms of a heart attack can differ in men and women. It is
important to know and recognize these symptoms quickly because the more
time that passes without treatment, the greater the damage to the heart. Signs
and symptoms of a heart attack include:
• Chest discomfort - Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of
the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes
back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body - Symptoms can include
pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
• Shortness of breath - May occur with or without chest discomfort.
• Fatigue - Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint.
• Other signs - These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or
lightheadedness.
As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain
or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience
some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath,
nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
Trimming, Tuning and Optimizing to Improve
Efficiency and Enhance the Patient Experience
T
oday more than ever, it has become increasingly important for health care facilities to
look for cost-effective, alternative ways to keep spending down while at the same time
improving the patient experience through optimal efficiency and service. Recognizing this,
Peninsula Regional is working on innovative ways to improve its processes and revising them
in a way that is most efficient, ultimately resulting in better patient outcomes and lower
overall costs – which equals a win-win situation for everyone.
“Lean” – Removing Waste to Increase “Value Added Time” With Patients
Labor is the greatest cost for any health care organization. Until a few years ago, most
people in health care, as in many other industries, were convinced that higher quality meant
higher costs. If we wanted better health care, we would have to be willing to spend more.
However Peninsula Regional, along with many hospitals throughout the country, is
beginning to change that thought process and operate using principles from a concept
called Lean. Simply put, Lean means removing unnecessary waste. Originally envisioned by
Toyota as a way of doing more with less, the much-copied management system is becoming
the gold standard for U.S. hospitals. Its focus is on eliminating unnecessary waste (time
spent searching for supplies, unnecessary movement, time waiting, etc.) so that all labor adds
value and serves the customer’s needs. Lean principles can streamline processes, reduce
costs and improve the quality and timely delivery of products and services.
The Laboratory Is Going Lean
The Medical Center’s Laboratory is currently
undergoing an extensive Lean evaluation and
reorganization. Processes are being analyzed to evaluate
the unnecessary “waste” that is present – for example,
lengthy transport, unnecessary walking by staff, the
efficiency of the physical layout of the Lab, the amounts
of time specimens waited to be processed and more –
are considered waste. The Lab’s layout, methods and
workflow are being evaluated and redesigned based on
these assessments. Similar to other laboratories that
have implemented lean manufacturing principles, it is
anticipated that turn around times will be reduced by
30% and efficiency will greatly improve. And all of this
without adding new staff or equipment!
Electronic wristband scanning at the bedside reduces the
chance of human error and ensures each patient is receiving
the correct medications and procedures every time.
Using Technology to Improve Efficiency, Quality and Safety
Peninsula Regional is working to reduce the amount of unnecessary labor and, most
importantly, to improve patient outcomes through the use of advanced technology. At the bedside,
nurses use a handheld wireless device to scan the medication, their own employee ID badge and the
patient’s wristband to verify the “five rights” of medication administration – right patient, right drug,
right dose, right route and right time. This system checks and double checks each medication order
to ensure it is correct for each patient, reducing the time and labor it would take for each nurse to do
this manually, while also eliminating the risk of human error. In 1999, Peninsula Regional installed
one of the nation’s first drug dispensing robots. “Rosie” is a state-of-the-art pharmacy robot that fills
over 2,600 medication doses daily with 100% accuracy. Rosie eliminates the labor pharmacy
technicians would have to use to perform these tasks, and allows this labor to be used elsewhere in
the pharmacy for improved productivity. The Medical Center has also implemented electronic data
entry systems that greatly improve efficiency and reduce communication problems. A computerized
physician order entry system allows physicians to electronically write patient treatment orders,
eliminating legibly problems and greatly improving patient safety.
Combining Lean principles with advanced technology results in the ultimate outcome – higher
efficiency and improved care, which reduces costs and produces the priceless benefit of better
outcomes for the communities we serve.
“Rosie,” the pharmacy robot, fills over 2,600 medication doses
daily with 100% accuracy.
information to move electronically among disparate health
information systems. The goal of CRISP is to deliver the right health
information to the right place at the right time—anywhere in
Maryland—providing safer, timelier, efficient, effective, equitable,
patient-centered care.
As one example of the application of HIE, a patient’s discharge
summary from a hospital visit could be securely and electronically
delivered to his or her primary care physician across the state,
providing for improved continuity of care. Combined with the
widespread adoption of electronic medical records by hospitals and
physicians, HIE is one of the two critical components to building a
truly integrated, 21st-century health care delivery system.
Dr. Snyder also serves as the Medical Center’s Chief Medical
Information Officer. Dr. Desmarais was recently elected President of
the Medical Staff.

Peninsula Regional’s
2009-2014 Strategic Plan
Innovation-Leadership-Action
Results Matter: Our Journey to Exceptional Care
W
hen Peninsula Regional launched its 2009-2014 Strategic Plan in the fall of last year,
it marked a new and challenging direction for the Medical Center.
The previous process resulted in the largest construction and expansion effort in the
history of Wicomico County; $100 million dollars to build or renovate patient care areas,
create new or grow existing services and add technology, all to maintain its status as the
regional leader in health care.
While the previous plan also called the Medical Center to action on priorities like
construction, service growth, clinical quality, efficiency, safety and physician relationships,
this new strategic plan-which is very much a complete team project-points the Medical
Center down a somewhat different path. “We’re looking to place primary or specialty care
offices, diagnostic testing facilities and other multi-specialty facilities in outlying portions of
our service area where we can be more accessible to those communities,” added
President/CEO Peggy Naleppa, MS, MBA, Dr. M., FACHE. “The goal is to reduce
fragmentation of services and strengthen the continuum of care model.”
The current strategic plan is a very transparent commitment on the part of the Medical
Center to guarantee the best possible care. It’s extremely “people and patient” focused.
Setting that focus is the goal of the six driving strategies (see Driving Strategy Summary)
created from Peninsula Regional’s Mission Statement, Values and Vision Statement. “Each
driving strategy represents the ‘what’ of what it is we are trying to reach,” said Doug Wilson,
PhD, Director of Planning and Business Development. “These are the goals we need to
achieve in order to position Peninsula Regional for future success.”
Multidisciplinary tactical teams have been charged with bringing each driving strategy to
life. The tactical teams design the ‘how’ of how it’s all going to get done. They’re determining
how to best provide resources and technology to attract and support physicians; how to
improve patient centered care; how to recruit and keep exceptional employees; how to
expand Peninsula Regional’s outstanding clinical and technical capabilities beyond the
campus and then how to link all of those capabilities electronically.
“Our strategic plan requires us to be future oriented and to determine how our
organization will look and act three to five years from now,” added Naleppa. “We’re forced to
focus beyond our normal, everyday issues and project what the Delmarva region will
ultimately need.”
Mission Statement
Improve the health of the communities we serve.
Values
• Respect for every individual • Delivery of exceptional
service • Continuous improvement • Safety and
effectiveness • Trust and compassion • Transparency
Vision Statement
As the Delmarva Peninsula's referral medical center, we
will be the leader in providing a system of regional
access to comprehensive care that is interconnected,
coordinated, safe and the most clinically advanced.
We will deliver an exceptional patient and family
experience, while fostering a rewarding environment for
physicians and employees. Together, Peninsula
Regional Medical Center and its physicians will be a
trusted partner in improving the health of the region.
Foundation Chairman’s Message
Dear Donors,
We did it! The Peninsula Regional Medical Center
Foundation completed our $15 million Journey to a
Legacy Capital Campaign in March of 2009. The
Foundation Board would like to thank you for your
support of our efforts. The Medical Center’s expansion
and renovation project is complete and we can all be
proud of the role we played in making this concept a
reality.
The expansion and renovation project includes the
Layfield Tower, which houses a new intensive care unit,
pediatric unit, and additional private rooms as well as the new Robert T.
Adkins, M.D. Emergency/Trauma Center. Also from the expansion came the
Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute, centralizing cardiac services and
providing additional space for new technology; the Richard A. Henson Cancer
Institute, providing a wide spectrum of cancer services in a comfortable
environment for patients and their families; and the Frank B. Hanna
Outpatient Center, where approximately 200 people come each day for testing
and outpatient procedures. These facilities have truly changed the landscape
of the Medical Center.
The Foundation remains committed to its mission of providing support
for the Medical Center. In these tough economic times every dollar is crucial.
As we move forward, we thank donors and friends and look forward to
continuing the journey of providing the best medical care available to our
community.
A Message From The Chairman
Few are as fortunate as I to be handed the keys to Peninsula Regional Medical Center by a gentleman’s
gentleman, Dr. Farouk Sultani, at such an exciting time. As he departs his three-year chairmanship of the
Board of Trustees and I begin mine, I am privileged to have the distinct honor to be asked to provide
community leadership to this dynamic, high quality and critically-important institution.
Before many much larger hospitals had even begun discussing patient and medication safety,
Peninsula Regional was already implementing it in the pharmacy, at the bedside and throughout its
electronic medical record and physician computerized medication ordering systems. New initiatives, like
24 hour teleICU monitoring of critically ill patients and advanced robotic surgery, continue to characterize
the exceptional advancements here.
We can all be proud of the Medical Center’s back-to-back national Distinguished Hospital Awards placing us among the
top 5% of all American hospitals. 2010 Clinical Excellence Awards, 5-Star ratings across numerous services and “best on
Delmarva” designations all speak to the commitment and passion of our dedicated medical staff, employees and volunteers.
Much of that unprecedented success resulted from the visionary direction of Alan Newberry, who expected nothing but
the best of this organization. Alan, who retired this month as President/CEO of the Peninsula Regional Health System after 17
years of executive leadership, now turns over the Health System – as he did a year ago with the Medical Center, to the
exceptionally qualified Dr. Peggy Naleppa.
Peggy has the full support and confidence of the board as she begins writing her own history as the President/CEO of the
Health System and the Medical Center. Peggy is currently leading a new Strategic Plan that focuses on recruiting and retaining
physicians and staff and expanding connectivity to health care services with an emphasis on patient-centered care. It’s an
ambitious start for a gifted and ambitious leader with a view to the future.
And yes, this board will face its own challenges. We need more physician specialists in our region, we must learn how to
do more with less because of rate reductions, and we may not know for months what effect health care reform might have on
our Medical Center.
What I can assure you, on behalf of the board, is that Peninsula Regional Medical Center will continue to provide the most
technically-advanced medical, clinical and surgical care possible. We’re honored to share the keys to your Medical Center.
Farouk Sultani, MD
On October 1, 2009,
Farouk Sultani, MD
concluded a very
successful three year term
as the Chairman of the
Peninsula Regional Health
System Board of Directors
and the Peninsula
Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees.
“Dr. Sultani set the bar high and will be
remembered at our Medical Center for years
to come as an outstanding surgeon and
Chairman who led us through a period of
unprecedented change and growth,” said
President/CEO Peggy Naleppa, MS, MBA,
Dr. M., FACHE. “More importantly, when
recalled, people will speak of him as a true
gentleman, a devoted friend, a loving husband
and father, and one of the kindest people they
will have ever had the privilege of knowing.”
Dr. Sultani, who retired from a successful
plastic surgery practice last year, joined the
Peninsula Regional medical staff in 1982. Dr.
Sultani and his wife Shirley live in Ocean City.
A Message From The President
There’s no understating the importance of strategic planning
at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. From my office and
throughout our top leadership, strategy defines the essence of
executive responsibility. As the President exercises strategic
leadership, the Board of Trustees-led by Dr. Ray Hoy-provides the
influence and oversight.
Our 2009-2014 Strategic Plan is a change in direction as it
focuses more on the key issues that are at the core of our
organization. That, as we have pointed out in an accompanying story in this edition of
HealthFocus, includes recruiting and retaining physicians and staff, and redefining
our commitment to advanced technology and electronic connectivity.
We must embrace and implement new technology into our everyday lives,
demonstrating superior performance on all dimensions of patient-centered care, thus
advancing patient satisfaction. The uniqueness of the importance for us is that
advanced medical technology in the right hands can and does heal people and save
lives. The challenge, as Dr. Hoy touched on in his message, is that we’re doing this-and
have to-in an unsettled economic environment.
We must be forward thinking with our strategic plan as it is our roadmap for the
future. But, we all know how tough it can be at times to get a roadmap properly
refolded after opening it. To be successful you need the skills to do both. We must be
aggressive in our vision but at the same time practice resource optimization and
process and work flow management. Waste and inefficiency need to be eliminated. If
we allow that to occur, the best strategic plan isn’t worth unfolding in the first place.
Our Executive Team and Board of Trustees will monitor implementation of the
strategic plan based on the accomplishments of driving strategies and tactics as well
as performance against key indicators. In health care, you can’t afford to be caught
lagging behind.
Planning and Business Development Director Doug Wilson and I are always
happy to share more about our Medical Center’s vision for the future and how we
intend to implement this strategic plan into important emerging areas of need, some
perhaps even in your own backyard. If interested, please contact us through our
Speaker’s Bureau at 410-543-7287.
