BB Breaks New Ground in
Secondary School

Anchors’
Fun Day
The Anchors’ Fun Day
took place in Fort Lucan
on the outskirts of Dublin
on Saturday 8th May 2010.
The Anchors created their
own adventures as they
discovered secret slides,
climbing 40 foot towers
and high walkways before
zipping across the aerial
runways and, of course,
the dreaded water slide;
just as well all had a
change of clothes!
The 3rd Bournemouth Boys’ Brigade Company started in
April 2010. It is the first BB Company to run in a secondary
school and has become part of the school’s extended services
programme. The group meets at 3.30pm every Tuesday in the
Bishop of Winchester School in Bournemouth and is run by
teachers at the school, our Development worker in the area
Sophie Zephirin and a team of volunteers.
Working within the school is an excellent opportunity to explore
new ways of ‘doing BB’. The group currently has ten Year 7
students attending and the plan is to build on the founding
members and offer the opportunity to Year 7 & 8 students
from September.
Most of those attending have said that they have never
experienced anything like it before and attendance is excellent.
Activities so far have included fencing, street dance, basic drill
and team building.
The Company is able to use all the school resources including
the mini bus at no cost. In September the school will become
an Academy and whilst this will impact on the current set up this
will also benefit the Company through potential funding.
The local Bible College, Moorlands, is considering making
Bournemouth Battalion a placement for its BA in Youth
and Community students.
This is an exciting new piece of work and one that can be
modeled in other schools both primary and secondary.
Thanksgiving Services
During the month of April, Services of Thanksgiving were held
around the country in St. Mary’s Church, Baltinglass, Castro
Petre Church, Edenderry and Killeshandra Parish Church,
Killeshandra with many members, leaders, parents and friends
attending. All were blessed with exceptionally fine weather. As is
customary, the host Company provides refreshments for all after
the Service and is an important part of the fellowship of the day.
