FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Greetings, Tënä koutou katoa!
We’ve had another great start to the year at
your old school. Once again our NCEA
results have risen sharply and 75% of our
Year 11 students gained NCEA Level 1
(NCEA Level 1 has replaced School
Certificate). We’re very pleased with this
because only four years ago our pass rate
was less than 50%.
And it was good news for the school too that
Tom Wilkinson, our Dux last year, gained a
Premier Scholarship. This means that his 5
scholarship passes (including four at
“outstanding” level) ranked him as one of the
Top 10 students in the country. This is a real
feather in the cap for Papanui High School.
!
At the beginning of the year we opened a
new state of the art Technology and Arts
Block. This has been added to what you will
know as the Hinton Wing.
At the same time we opened the new Careers
and Transition suite which is situated right in
the middle of A Block giving more students
access to this very important area of the
school. We also opened our remodelled
Music department in the Roper Wing.
There will be a great opportunity for you to
come and see all the new facilities in the
school. On Friday the 20 th of March at
6.00pm the Alumni Association is holding a
get-together and you will have the opportunity
to look around the school and see what you
can recognise. I’d be delighted to meet as
many of you as possible and to hear your
stories about how things used to be!
Hinton Wing – Technology/Art Design
Roger McKay Chairman of the BOT opening the
new wing earlier this month. The old metal and
wood work rooms have been incorporated and five
spacious classroom have been added along the
back of the wing.
Thinking further ahead, we’re all getting
excited about the 75 th Jubilee which will be
taking place in 2011. Jack Dzenis, who was
a pupil of the school in the ‘60’s has agreed
to be Chairperson of the Jubilee Committee.
He too will be present at the Alumni gettogether
on the 20 th March.

The School Logo
The original school logo was the stylized CTC similar
to that of the parent, Chch Technical College. With
the change of name to Papanui Technical High
School in 1945 the art teacher Mr JM Thomasson
produced a new logo. In 1955 the word Technical
was withdrawn and the present logo (top left of this
page) was adopted.
Colin Amedeo MA Hons
Commenced teaching here in 1967 and
became Teacher-Librarian in 1971. While here
Colin began writing about ships and seamen.
He left in 1986 to continue his marine reasearch
and his writing. The school library purchased a
copy of his limited edition “The Summer Ships”
about the first four ships which arrived at
Lyttelton.

Memories of a student (1936-38)
I did seem to often be in trouble!!
Hats. I could never keep my hat on whilst
cycling especially in a nor’wester so it was
usually crammed under the belt which kept my
school case on the carrier, or squashed in one
hand …always in trouble, “must wear a a hat –
use an elastic band” !!. I did once tie on the
hated hat with binder twine complete with big
bow on top!!
No mixing with boys No cycling along the
roads with a boy from the school, or any boy,
and never be seen talking to a boy. sometimes
I was guilty of both at the same time talking to
and cycling with a boy!!
One lunch hour dare found Peggy Ayers and
myself riding to school on a tandem – for
another detention – and to add insult to injury
while we were doing long tots in detention,
pupils and even some teachers were riding
around the streets on our hired tandem!
The school dance. It was held in the art room
where Mr Knight presided during the day –
someone playing the piano and pupils selfconsciously
circling for the Gay Gordon, or
bravely doing a Boston two-step.
Assembly was held in the shelter shed.
Lateness was punished by having to stand at
the front. Talking or fidgeting earned the right
to stand up the front and sing the daily hymn!
Although I spent many hours in detention I did
learn something and surprisingly did not want
to leave but the economics of that time
determined I had to.

The School Tie
The original tie was green with narrow gold diagonal stripes about 15cm apart.
The tie introduced in 1947 was light grey with 8cm diagonal stripes of green edged in
gold. By 1954 senior boys could wear a plain green tie with white shirt or the open necked
grey shirts. Girls at that time wished they could have the plain green tie too as the grey
background on theirs went yellowy brown after ironing.

Ties are now optional but the Head Team of senior students wear them to formal occasions.

Two ex –students Nancy (nee Thiele) and Jim Henery who celebrated their Diamond
wedding anniversary 5 February 2009. Their romance started at school in 1945. Jim was
a Captain of Wakefield House, a prefect and active in sport and Cadets. Nancy was junior
athletic champion in 1943
