TERM 2 2013
AVERILL HOUSE
Overall House Music Champions 2013
It has been a great Term for Averill House. We have also performed well on many stages, we reached the semi finals in
House Basketball, the final of House Tug-of-war and the Debating semifinal. The highlight was definitely winning everything
there was to win in House Music, an outstanding effort for all involved. We have many Inter-House competitions next
Term which will keep the boys very busy. We are well into our Cross-country training although there is a long way to go
and many boys should be working hard on the roads over the holidays. Cross-country is something that is easy to do well
in, we just have to run more than the rest of the Houses in training. The seniors went Go-Karting as a House, while the
Year 9s had a sleep over, where they were able to get a lot more sleep this time compared to the Boarding Weekend at
the start of the year. The Seniors went out to celebrate the Music win with Dinner, while the Juniors enjoyed Pizza for
lunch recently. All of the boys received House Cultural Colours which is wonderful.
Winter Sport is well underway with Averill represented in every Sport that King’s offers. It is great to see students trying
new thing’s and thriving. I always want Averill boys to be known for their dedication to everything they do and for the
most part the boys have done their part around the school.
Term 2 orders will have given the boys a very clear indication of what they need to work on over the break and where
their focus should be for the remainder of the year. While there has been a decrease in the number of ‘D’ Attitude and
Effort grades this term, there has also been fewer ‘A’ Grades. With much going on at King’s it is important the boys
remember that their academics are their first priority at King’s.
Below are some highlights from our Term Orders for Term
The busy term got the better of some boys. Time management
is key for them to do well. They must make sure they have
more time on task than they do off it, if they wish to achieve
well.
Each boy in the House received their House Cultural Colours
for winning House Music this is a great achievement for the
boys, Averill has not won Big House Music since 25 years since
1988, we have never won Overall and it is our first win for
Small House also. Hopefully the start of an era
We had two Year 13s promoted to House Prefect this term.
Jack Wan and Liam van der Drift have been working very hard
in the House and going above and beyond, helping out with
extra duties and setting a good example to younger members
of the House.
David Shin was promoted to a School Prefect in recognition for
the example he is setting to all students in the House and
King’s College. He is heavily involved in Culture within the
school and is the Averill Deputy Head of House responsible for
Culture. Dave was a solo vocalist for All the King’s Men Choir
recently at The Big Sing Regionals. He is also the Leader of THe
King’s College International Club student club.
Felix Fielding was awarded a Service Tie at the end of Term
Assembly for Rowing and Squash Coaching, which was great to
see.
Congratulations must go to Tom Brown and Jeremy Schoeller
were awarded their Bronze Edinburgh Award earlier this term
also.
Head of House
Prefect Reports
Term 2 kicked off with a quick pace that has never really let
off, with Small House music practicing nearly every night and
Big House music fitting in practices whenever enough people
were available. Somehow we managed to not only take out
Small House after coming runner up two years previously, but
also to clinch Big House, due to our amazing band and the
hard-work and dedication of the boys. It showed that again the
boys are clearly able to live up to our motto Non Sine Pulvere
Palma. Now however it’s time to kick off the dancing shoes put
away the singing voices and get training for Cross Country.
We’ve already seen some good progress this term, and I expect
for the boys to go for a couple of runs a week these holidays!
Alongside Cross-country we have had the kick off of the winter
sporting season. We clearly have some talent amongst our
juniors with 7B playmaker Oscar Frith, 7A workhorse John
Commissaris and Angus Bendall and Jayden Weston scoring
multitudes of goals for their respective soccer teams. Also
amongst the seniors we have several top tier players in the
first fifteen, first five basketball, and Senior A squash.
The younger boys have done well this term showing that
they are true Averillians, even if a new breed of, giving their
very best in all aspects. All the Year Nines have successfully
passed our naming ceremony as well, hooray!
So we all just need to keep trudging on, step by step, with
our best foot forward and shirts tucked in, showing Averill
in the best light possible. Bring on Term 3.
Head of House
Ed Clapham
Cultural
It has been a very successful term of cultural activities for
Averill. Our most important news comes from the House
Music competition, winning all the titles, which includes
Small, Big, and Overall House Music Winner. We managed
to perform better than what we all expected for Big
House, as the rehearsals for it were not looking too good.
This made a history for Averill House, by winning Small
House for the first time, and winning all the titles for the
first time too. Besides our great accomplishments, house
debating did not end up as successful as House Music. The
team (James Bridgman, Jack Wan and Tim Wait)
unfortunately lost to Taylor House in the first round. Lastly,
congratulations to All The Kings Men, who sung beautifully
in the regional and now onto Finale down at Dunedin next
term. Four members out of 32 are from Averill, (Rohith
Vinod, Sioi Kaihau, Che Tonga and myself) and King’s
managed to get into top 18 schools out of 252 that made it
through the Finale. To finish up, I was really pleased with
what Averill House has achieved this term, and also backing
up that the major change to this house is working very well
in terms of togetherness and house spirit. Lets keep it up
and finish up strong Averill!
Sport
Term two has been a big sporting term for Averill house
with almost all of the boys participating in a winter sport
and a variety of Inter-house competitions taking place.
Averill has done well in the Inter-house competitions
coming second to Selwyn house in the inter-house tug of
war and getting knocked out in the semifinal in inter-house
basketball by Parnell house who later went on to win
house basketball. Averill has also had some very good
individual sporting achievements with Harrison Young
making New Zealand U17 basketball, William Mitchell
making the Auckland Marist A team in Waterpolo, Sam
Hollings and Sam Hayes also did well both making the New
Zealand Baseball team in their respective age group. There
have also been many people representing the school in top
sports teams with Averill house having three players in the 1st
XV rugby team, four players in the 1st 5 Basketball team and
Mitchell Murray in the 1st XI hockey team. Term 2 has also
been very crucial in the build up to house Cross-country in
Term 3 with all of the boys taking part in training runs twice a
week. We would also encourage the boys to keep their fitness
up over the holidays by running twice a week every week.
Academic
This term has been a very busy term for both the seniors and
the junior students, with the seniors having CIE re-sits and the
juniors having their junior exams. I hope you got the mark you
deserve. This term has also been very successful in the
classroom With Exemplary Performance Awards (EPA’s) given
to John Commissaris, Varun Ghadiali, Amanpreet Bains (with 3
this term), Angus Bendall, Joseph Kelly (with 2 this term),
Jeremy Schoeller, Matt Olo-Whaanga and Niwa Landall-Blair.
I also would like to congratulate students this term for not
getting as many detentions compared to last term; I did want
this number to go down and its good to see it so.
Overall this term has been very challenging to the students
with CIE re-sits, internal assessments and junior exams. I think
the boys have done well and performed at a high level.
I wish all the boys the best, for a busy next term with mock
exams just around the corner for years 11-13.
Deputy Head of House, Academics
Tim Wait
Sacristans Report
Another full on term has nearly passed as we complete the
first half of the school year. I am happy to say that I have
enjoyed playing my particular role in the house, with organizing
voyager groups, handing out community service memos,
promoting the annual 40 Hour Famine, and collecting mufti day
funds and food items to be sent to and received by the hungry
and needy in our wider community.
The Voyager Program provides an introduction to the basics of
the Christian faith on a voluntary basis through movies and
discussion. This kicked off near mid-term, with a Thursday night
session for Year 13’s from 6pm – 7pm and an available Friday
lunchtime opportunity for any Day boys. There is a clear change
in the numbers attending these sessions compared to last year,
and boys know that they can arrange with me to make a
session that is suited to their available times during the week.
Community Service is popular among many of the seniors in
Averill, with regular attendances to the local Refugee Centre,
manning the Middlemore Reception Desk, and visits to various
Day Care Centre's in the local area. I am proud of the boys that
are willing to invest their time during their already busy weeks,
and give back to the community and offer their services where
need be. I hope that these patterns can continue into the new
term, even to find a free afternoon during the upcoming exam
period would be of great appreciation to the school and
community. as well as hopefully giving the boys a well
earned break from studying.
The annual 40 Hour Famine officially took place during the
already hyped-up ‘Grammar Week’. This week was
recognized as a huge distraction from doing the 40 Hour
Famine and it was something that we had no control over.
However it did not stop the determined to raise funds
through sponsors and donations. Averill raised just under
$100 which, compared to other houses was seen as ‘little’,
however I am truly grateful for those that did what they
could to raise any funds and I know that these will still
contribute to helping those in need.
This term saw more Mufti Days than I’ve ever seen at
Kings, therefore I have collected gold coin donations from
Averillian’s on numerous occasions that have gone towards
causes such as the Breast Cancer Foundation. At the end
of Term 1, Averill had collected and donated over 140 cans
of breakfast foods (spaghetti and baked beans) to local
schools in desperate need of food for their breakfast clubs
to feed their students who turn up to school with empty
stomachs. This vast amount of cans had to be transported
down to the chapel on the back of one of the boys
vehicles.
It is important that if the boys achieve anything outside of
school or anything that we are not aware of they let the
Prefect in Charge know. This means that as a House we can
celebrate their achievements.
Finally, a bit of Housekeeping, Year 12 and 13 students are due
back in the House on MONDAY July 29th by 8:20pm.
The Term begins on Tuesday July 30th, the Year 9 -
11 boys should be in the House for call-over by 8:15am.
Please ensure your son has an acceptable haircut, as some boys
are flying too close to the wire on these.
Please make sure your sons uniform still fits him. There are
starting to be a few white shirts with buttons that are not done
up around the collar, please be aware that your son may receive
a Detention if this is the case. The boys will need to wear their
Winter Number 1’s on the first day of term.
Please enjoy your time with your sons over the holidays. Please
make sure they get some work done especially the seniors who
have exams in Week 7 of Term 3.
Warm regards,
Daniel and the Averill Team
I can say that this role has brought with it many pleasures
whilst many challenge’s this term, of which I look forward
to taking on next term. I believe we all deserve a break
from it all, and then return refreshed and ready for round
three.
