NEW ‘CHAMP CUP’
HONORS MEMORY OF
JIM CHAMPLIN ’72:
Jim “Champ” Champlin ’72 wore many
hats during his tenure at Moeller, but his
most prominent role was as Trinity House
Dean, one of the founding leaders of the
House System. After Jim passed away from
cancer in June 2011, the administration chose
Dan Dever from Moeller’s Pastoral Ministry
Department to
become the
new Trinity
Dean. Dan’s
first initiative
was to create
the “Champ
Cup,” which is
similar to the
Marianist Cup
that is awarded
to the House
with the most
points at the
end of the year.
Dan decided that individual Mentor Groups
within Trinity House would compete
against each other in activities where
everyone could participate. “Champ was
instrumental in getting students involved,”
Dan explained. “The Champ Cup will be
awarded to the Mentor Group with the
most activity-related points at the end of
each quarter and will reside in the room of
the winning Mentor Group. The Champ
Cup will be a constant reminder of Jim and
his legacy. Trinity House is what it is today
because of him.”
BREAKING NEWS: Moeller Wins
Nike Rivalry Uniform Contest! Out of 718 high
schools, Moeller won the Nike contest that highlighted
football traditions across the country. The
prize is new football uniforms for 2012, valued at
more than $17,5K. Alumnus Rob Ebel ’82, the
JUNIOR EARNS EAGLE
SCOUT AWARD: Mitch Hoelker
earned his Eagle Scout
Award recently by
rebuilding a shelter by
the Blue Ash YMCA.
“To get the project going
I had to figure out how
to fund it. I noticed the
YPC (Moeller’s Youth Philanthropy
Council) application in an email…,and
they gave me $900, which almost funded
the whole project. I really feel that YPC
is a great way for Moeller to leave a
footprint in our community. It tells
people what Moeller is all about – our
mission to help others and the community.”
Scout rank 41 years ago.
By Barry Borman ’64, Athletic Director
We had another great fall season!
FOOTBALL: Football captured its first outright GCL
Championship since 1997; we placed several players on
All-League and All-District Teams; and Coach Rodenberg
was named GCL Coach of the Year. Moeller qualified for its 30th appearance in
the State Football Playoffs and 10th consecutive year qualifying for the playoffs,
which is the longest Division I streak in the state. Our football team played one
of the most difficult schedules in the country, and Coach Rodenberg and his
staff prepared our team well as we moved into the regional championship
game against St. X.
SOCCER: Soccer made it to the District Finals before losing a tough overtime
game, while Crusader Chris Nartker was named to the All-State Team.
GOLF: Golf just missed qualifying to the State Championships this year by
a couple strokes. The golf team had qualified nine consecutive years to the
State Tournament.
CROSS COUNTRY: Cross Country had one of its best teams in several years
carrying a squad of over 60 athletes.
OVERALL STANDINGS: Now we find ourselves second in the league standings
for the All-Sports Trophy as we move into a challenging winter season.
PASTORAL MINISTRY
NAMES AWARDEES: The
Pastoral Ministry Department honored
three students with the Charlotte
McCullough Award for service: (pictured
Ittenbach ’12, and Matthew Messina ’13.
70 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE
IN SUMMER SERVICE TRIPS:
More than 70 Moeller students participated
in eight different summer service trips that
ranged from experiences in Cincinnati’s
Over-the-Rhine, to a Navajo reservation
in New Mexico, to a rural village outside
of Truijillo, Peru. In Peru, 16 students
worked with students from the Marianist
school of Collegio Santa
Maria Marianistas in a
rural village called
Otuzco. They also
expanded their cultural
horizons by visiting the
UNESCO World Heritage
Site in Machu Picchu.
new athletic website features broadcasts,
video clips,
news, and
much more.
Alumnus
Rob Ebel ’82
is the designer
and webmaster… A month after its
debut, the site passed the one million
view mark. “We broke a record,” said
Ebel. “We went over the 1,000,000 view
mark faster than any other school in
their company's history.” The company
sponsor, iHigh.com, has been in
business for five years and has 4,120
active high schools across America.
