Bermuda Battles!

I just returned from the Bermuda 

Regional again. As always it was a 

fabulous event! Here is another exciting 

tale from this wonderful place… 

The top player in Bermuda is not just 

any ordinary good player. His name is 

Roman Smolski. Roman has been one 

of the best card players in the world for 

many decades (just Google his name). 

Roman still has a flair for the game that 

makes him dangerous and exciting to 

sit against. What I love about the way 

Roman plays the game is he’s always 

working hard to make life as difficult 

as possible on his opponents. Here is 

an auction with Roman creating action 

against me!

Roman opened 1N and my Double 

showed two touching suits (in this 

case I actually had three). My partner 

made a good decision to turn my 

conventional double into a penalty 

double (something we do quite often). 

Then came the surprise of the auction 

– Roman jumped back in with 3♣! 

This was certainly a new auction for 

us – having never discussed something 

like this before, I hoped that my pass 

showed that ♣ wasn’t one of my suits 

and that my partner’s jump to 4♥ was 

pass or correct (though she was pretty 

sure ♥ was one of my suits)… Roman’s 

double ended the auction and this was 

the dummy she saw:

Roman led the ♦A and the first four

We need to take the rest of the tricks. 

That means playing the ♠ suit for no 

losers. To give us the best chance to 

do that we should play a few tricks to 

figure out more information about the 

hand. 

We ruff a ♦ from the dummy, cash the 

♣A, ruff a ♣, and cash dummy’s last ♦.

So now we know that LHO had 2♥ 

and 3♦. His black suit holdings are 

probably either 3♠-5♣ or, much more 

likely from the auction, 2♠-6♣. So 

Roman is 2-2-3-6. 

Note: If he has 3♠ with the Q, there’s 

not a whole lot we can do about it. So 

we ignore that situation anyway. 

We have to decide between taking 

a finesse or playing for the ♠Q to 

drop. We need to stop and count what 

points we have seen so far! Roman has 

shown up with ♥A ♦AKQ ♣K. That’s 

16 HCP and a likely 6 card ♣ suit. He 

can’t possibly have the ♠Q as well, can 

he! So we take the finesse! 

Against almost any other player we 

would be virtually certain that this was 

going to work – but against Roman, 

you still never know. Fortunately, 

today the finesse worked and we 

scored up 4♥X, making 4, for +790. A 

great result in tough tight match! But 

Roman never makes it easy…

THE REGIONAL AT SEA – December 5th – 12th 

ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S LIBERTY OF THE SEAS 

MIAMI – HAITI- JAMAICA-GRAND CAYMAN-COZUMEL 

And a wonderful bridge experience 

was had by all. This innovative venue for 

an ACBL/USBF sanctioned Regional 

tournament was a resounding success. The 

late Bernie Chazen who developed this 

concept has a bridge legacy that will surely 

endure. The tournament had a whopping 

943 tables for the week. Larry Cohen and 

able-bodied companion, his wife Maria, 

picked up those reins and ushered in a very 

successful bridge vacation for all. 

The staff for this event was led once again 

by our own Unit 128 Business Manager Jayne 

Thomas and top kick* Shannon Cappelletti. 

Marianne Timmons and Gretchen Funk 

were our partnership desk and struck it well 

with many successful pairings and teams. 

The directors were led tirelessly by one of 

the great head directors – Terry Lavender 

and her staff – Harry Falk, Anne Duty, Tim 

Crank and our able caddy Jennifer. These 

folks were wonderful in what was for them 

a stressful maiden voyage. Ships are not 

hotels, so there were some 

challenges. Phyllis Loverdi 

and her Alice Travel helper 

were instrumental in 

bridging that gap. Royal 

Caribbean did its part 

by having their numero 

uno customer relations 

2009 Regional-at-Sea directors were 

Anne Duty, Harry Falk, Terry Lavendar 

and Tim Crank 

employee for the whole fleet as our table-side 

companion for the whole trip. 

Everyone was encouraged to come down 

to the playing area after boarding to preregister 

for the first evening's Knock-Out. 

It was a little chaotic this first time out with 

50 teams entering this first event. Brackets 

were set at eight teams each with two nines. 

Our team's goal was to win this first event. 

We would be in the record book as winners 

of the first KO at sea. More importantly, 

my partner and I would now be able to skip 

the next KO and go on a tour of Jamaica 

with our wives, thus scoring all important 

husband points rather than master points. 

The mission was accomplished and touring 

was on. 

Larry’s lectures each day were strongly 

attended. This was capped off with a final 

evening-at-sea lecture that in Larry’s own 

words he described as a “ tribute he really 

didn’t deserve’. Larry, please don’t be the 

modest guy you are. The 230 attendees all 

believed you deserve, absolutely deserve it 

as one of the great bridge teachers/lecturers, 

authors, players of all time. Also Larry, 

at the closing cocktail party on Saturday 

you really nailed the reason for the great 

success of this inaugural regional at sea. 

Your closing remark was a thank you to the 

players and attendees themselves who made 

it all possible. And to show how they really 

felt about the whole venture 

and week of bridge and 

travel, over 100 re-upped for 

next year before leaving the 

ship on Sunday. Join us for 

the December 12-19, 2010 

REGIONAL AT SEA, 

again aboard Liberty of the 

Seas. 

Personally, I had the best of all possible 

weeks, I got to play with friend and new 

sometime partner Bob Dennard from 

Orlando, traveling with wife Deborah. And 

our friends and teammates Diana Holt of 

Palm Beach and Ed Schulte from Tampa 

carried us to wins in the first knock-out and 

two of the three Swiss team events. It was our 

non playing captain and my travel companion 

wife Linda’s job to maintain the meal schedule 

and shore arrangements. By trip end she 

was affectionately known as Captain Ding 

Ding for ringing the dealer’s tip bell –ding 

ding ding - on big winning hands at the ship 

casino’s three card poker table. I got to join 

her the last night out and hit big with both a 

straight flush (40 to 1) and three of a kind (30 

to 1). And yes, the Halls re-upped along with 

the Dennards for December 2010. 

The top masterpoint winners for the week 

with 54 MPs were Charlotte and Martin 

Baff from Ohio. They were double winners, 

as this cruise was for their 60th wedding 

by Marshall Hall 

anniversary, an extremely wonderful 

milestone. Also from my home town of 

Boca Raton congratulations to Diane and 

Stephen Schmetz and Judi and Paul Frank 

for their KO win in Bracket 5. Of the 324 

players who attended this tournament, 311 

divvied up 3668.98 total masterpoints for 

the week. The gold points won created nine 

new Life Masters from this tournament. 

Congratulations to Dorothy Flood, Coconut 

Creek, IL; Bunny George, Jacksonsville; 

Judi Goldsmith, Boca Raton; Jim Loomis, 

Dunnellon; Jack Mathews, Naples; Tom 

Punto, Newtown, CT; Norma Quinn, Vero 

Beach; Kate Robbins, Jacksonville; and Sam 

Rubin, Naples. 

There were many unknowns when this trip 

started. It was a ground-breaking venture 

for all concerned. There were many 17 or 

18 hour days for Terry Lavender, but she 

came through with straight A marks from all 

involved. Larry as a fill-in for Bernie did it all, 

from lectures, to liaison, to editor of the daily 

bulletin. Why, he even caddied a couple of 

times! If it hadn’t been for Maria bringing 

him meals in the playing area, he probably 

would have starved to death. He never did 

get to go ashore. 

I want to thank all of you on behalf of 

Florida Unit 128 for making this tournament 

the success it was for all who attended from 

thirty states and three countries. 

*Editor's Note: Marshall assures us that a 

"kick" is a very trusty sidekick and definitely the 

equivalent (or better) of a right-hand man.

been time to switch to ♥s. A member of 

the Chinese Women's Team found this 

play on the way to winning the Venice 

Cup in Brazil last year. Of several toplevel 

players who had to choose a lead, 

she was the only one to get it right. If a

What an exciting time of year this is! We had a great Sectional 

in January at the lovely Chelsea Center and we just finished 

our wonderful Regional at the Manatee Convention Center in 

Palmetto. 

All of our snowbird friends are here, making lots of our daily 

games 80 tables big. We have our very popular dealing machine, 

and the new automatic scoring machines at each table at the 

InBetween Club. Isn’t technology grand 

We also have two great Youth for Bridge programs going 

at Booker Middle School and St. Martha’s School. I think the 

volunteers are having as much fun as the students, and we are 

all very pleased with how things are developing. 

Coming events include our Annual Unit 102 Member 

Awards Luncheon on March 27, at Pine Shores Community 

Center. It is a Swiss Team GNT Qualifying Championship 

starting at 11:00 A.M.. We only have room for 60 teams, so 

make your reservations early. A free Lunch is included, and 

Awards are given to new Life Masters, and Ace of Clubs and 

Mini-McKenney winners, so come and help celebrate the 

successes of your friends. 

We will also be holding some Grand National Team 

qualifying events at our local clubs. Watch your bulletin boards 

and the Unit website for exact dates. 

I hope you are all enjoying your bridge here in our own 

little corner of paradise. Please remember to do your part to 

make everyone happy at the table. Congratulations to our two 

newest members of the District 9 Goodwill Committee. They 

are Doug Drew and Cynthia Murphy. They were nominated 

for their service to the bridge community and for exemplary 

behavior at the bridge table.

MEMBER AWARDS LUNCHEON 

Unit 102’s annual Member Awards Luncheon has been changed from its former 

mid-summer date to Saturday, March 27, 2010, a time when more Unit members 

are in the area and therefore able to pick up their awards personally. 

The event is a six-round Swiss Team GNT Qualifying Championship to be held 

at the Pine Shores Community Center. The awards presentation and luncheon will 

take place after two rounds. 

PLEASE NOTE: Starting time is set for 11 A.M. and entries are limited to 

60 teams, so please get your team together and make your reservation with

A LOSS TO US ALL 

Elmer Gilbert (Gil) Smith died on December 24, 2009 at age 83—a 

shock and loss to us all. He was a true gentleman, widely known and 

loved within the bridge community which he embraced almost from 

the beginning of his life in this area. 

Gil was a 34-year resident of Sarasota, moving here from the Chicago 

area with his late wife Marilyn (Lynn). A former marine wounded on 

Gil Smith Guam, he left behind a successful real estate career when he retired. 

He took up bridge after he moved. After Lynn’s death, he began playing bridge 

almost daily and was well known at bridge clubs in the area. A memorial service 

held for him on December 27 at the In-Between Club brought out his large circle 

of bridge friends, many of whom shared their memories of this always smiling man 

with a true sense of humor. 

Gil leaves behind two step-daughters, three grandchildren, three great 

grandchildren and his fiancée, Marcia Frankel. He will be sorely missed by all who 

knew him. 

JANUARY SECTIONAL ANOTHER SUCCESS 

Our January 2010 Tournament at the Chelsea Center attracted a total of 433.5 

tables, another success for our Unit and chair, Sandy Lewis. 

At the annual Unit 102 members’ meeting on Saturday, January 24, Dean Cohler, 

Jack Hawes, Michael Kassay and Sandy Lewis were all re-elected to new terms on 

the Board of Directors.

DISTRICT 9 YOUTH and 

NEWCOMERS 

YOUTH: April 1, 2010 is the deadline for all youth 

(19 years and under) to submit applications for District 9 GRANTS 

to attend the New Orleans Youth Nationals July 29-31, 2010. The 

District 9 Board of Directors has voted to pay all entry fees 

for eligible youth attending the New Orleans Youth Nationals. In 

addition, the District will award GRANTS to youth submitting 

an application (see below) to the Education Committee on or before 

April 1 st . The District will award some amount up to $500/youth 

for Youth National expenses incurred. 

Please note: The actual amount of the grant to each participant will depend 

on the number of applications received. The grant will be given to the applicant 

after the event and must be supported with receipts. 

If money cannot be advanced for a youth participant to attend, a letter 

explaining the circumstances should be submitted to the Education Committee. It 

is the District’s desire that no youth should be left out of the competition because 

of finances.

For those lucky players that attended the First ever 

Regional at Sea in December of last year, they can attest that 

it exceeded all expectations. Jayne Thomas and her "helpers", 

Shannon Cappelletti, Gretchen Funk and Marianne Timmons, 

working with the Directing Staff and the lectures by Larry Cohen, 

made this tournament unforgettable. So many bridge players 

were so happy that over 100 people signed up, while on board, 

for the 2010 Regional at Sea December 12-19. No one could have 

anticipated what a great week it would be. Don't you miss this 

year's Regional at Sea, because space is limited and once it has sold 

out, we won't be able to add additional space for tables or players. 

As I advised you in my previous message, Unit 128's first 

Regional tournament of 2010 will be the SOUTHEASTERNS 

REGIONAL, to be held again this year at the Hyatt Regency 

Pier 66 Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, April 19-25. Please make your 

reservations now if you plan to attend this great tournament. It 

is high season and the special bridge rate that we have negotiated 

runs out when our room block sells out. Don't be disappointed.

For those of you that plan to enter the Grand National Teams, 

club qualifying continues on through the end of March, with the 

GNT finals to be held on May 1 and 2 along with a side sectional 

starting on April 30 in Vero Beach.

BRIDGE PLAYER OF THE DECADE. 

As you may know, our Unit in cooperation with the other 

Units of District 9 is Hosting the Fall North American Bridge 

Championships (NABC) in Orlando this November. Each of 

your Board members has agreed to be responsible to coordinate 

volunteers for a single day at this tournament. I am responsible 

for volunteers for the registration desk, prize desk, etcetera on 

December 2, 2010. If you would like to serve as a volunteer 

during the Fall NABC, contact me or any of your Unit 128 Board 

Members so that we can offer the hospitality that tournaments in 

Florida are well known for.

The Punta Gorda Bridge Club used to sanctioned game at the Neptune Beach 

meet in a place that suffered damage from 

Hurricane Charlie in August, 2004. Since 

then, club manager Betty Misner has 

been keeping the club together in a lessadvantageous 

location. Now Betty has had 

to step down for health reasons, and Mary 

Chupak is filling in. Mary reports that all 

members are looking forward to having 

Betty back with them very soon. The club 

is moving back to its pre-Charlie home, 

with plenty of playing space and a view 

of Charlotte Harbor. A Christmas party 

featured lots of good eats, prizes, fun and a 

singing Santa, compliments of Sue Jones.

Steve Popham of Sebring writes to tell Coincidentally, another ABTA 

us that popular member Kenneth Turner award winner teaches in nearby Bonita 

turned 100 on February 8, 2010. Ken is an Springs. Pat Harrington won the award 

avid bridge player, has been playing for 80 in 2007. Other District 9 members 

years, and still plays at least once a week in 

who have won the award are Larry 

Florida, where he, his son Dave and family 

Cohen, Marty Bergen, and Burt Hall 

spend the winter, and in Ontario, Canada. 

Ken was the president of the American Bridge 

and Lynn Rose-Hall. Larry Cohen and 

Teacher's Association in 1964 and 1965 and Pat Harrington have also won the award 

had his own bridge club. Ken became a Life for new bridge teaching software. 

Master in 1960. He has been playing with 

his son, Dave at the Sebring, Florida club 

since 2002. The club celebrated Ken's 100th 

birthday on Wednesday, January 13 with 

a cake and many good wishes from club 

members. The Turners were scheduled to fly 

back to Canada in February for a big party 

with four generations of family, and friends. 

Steve tells us that "Ken is remarkable, sharp 

as a razor." In the photo, son Dave is on 

the left, Ken is on the right, shown at the 

birthday party bridge game. 

AMERICAN BRIDGE TEACHERS' 

ASSOCIATION AWARD WINNER DIES 

Caroline Rich Sydnor was the first 

recipient of the ABTA Book of the Year 

Award in 1982 for her third in a series 

of books in her Bridge Made Easy series. 

She subsequently won the award again, 

in 1993, for How to Set Your Opponents. 

Mrs. Sydnor was perhaps the first bridge 

teacher to design a set of playing cards to 

allow students to set up predetermined 

hands from the designations on the backs 

of the cards. Mrs. Sydnor died in Naples 

at the age of 96.

board member then. This gives you an idea 

of the devotion of Jayne to bridge, for at 

least 40 years! 

• In a feature called Life Masters Solvers 

Club (similar to It's Your Call in the ACBL 

Bulletin), some of the solvers in 1970 were 

Sally Saron, Jack Schwenke and Ron 

Schoenau, all of whom still frequent club 

games around Unit 128.
