American Burn Association

Harvey Stuart Allen Distinguished Service Award
This award is presented to an outstanding North American scientist for his/her
contribution in the burn field. The first award was presented in 1969 at the
suggestion of Dr. Curtis P. Artz. Dr. Allen was born in Livingston, Montana and
died at the early age of 48 of a myocardial infarct. Following his surgical training
at King's County Hospital in Brooklyn and in Chicago, he became associated with
the Department of Surgery at Northwestern University. He served during World
War II in the North African and Mediterranean Theaters of War. After the War,
he became involved with the Burn Unit at Cook County Hospital. He was among
the pioneers in developing aggressive coverage of the burn wound, introduced
several dressings in burn therapy, and focused his attention on meticulous care of
the burn wound. The present day care of burns owes much to the teachings of
Harvey Stuart Allen.
The award provides complimentary Annual Meeting registration and hotel
accommodations; complimentary coach airfare for the recipient and spouse or
guest; an engraved medal and honorarium of $2,000; and the option of honorary
rather than dues-paying membership in the ABA.
Individuals are nominated by the ABA president and selected by the Awards
Committee.
Curtis P. Artz Distinguished Service Award
This award is presented annually to a non-physician member of the American
Burn Association for his/her outstanding contributions in the burn field. This
first award was presented in 1977, and was originally called the Associate Award.
It was later changed to the Curtis P. Artz Distinguished Service Award to
memorialize Dr. Curtis P. Artz for his lifelong dedication to the well being of the
burn patient and the support of all others who could contribute to that goal in
the clinical, didactic, and research spheres. His interest in the organization and
provision of burn care arose during his years as a member of the surgical staff at
the U.S. Army Burn Center (USAISR). As the Commander of the Institute (1953-
56), Dr. Artz organized representatives of all the disciplines involved in the care
of burn patients as a burn team and ensured that physical therapists, occupational
therapists, research dieticians, and social workers as well as nurses and
physicians were included as indigenous staff members of the burn center. Dr. Artz
was one of the original members of a group of physicians who met annually at the
National Burn Seminars, the antecedents of the annual meetings of the ABA. Dr.
Artz appreciated the importance of rapidly disseminating the information
presented at such meetings to others involved in burn care. Accordingly, he led the
movement to found the American Burn Association with a membership that
would ensure involvement of all members of the burn team. Dr. Artz’s seminal
involvement in burn care included not only his service as the Commander of the
U.S. Army Burn Center but the development of burn centers at the University of
Mississippi, the University of Texas Medical Branch, and the Medical College of
South Carolina. His commitments to the multi-disciplinary burn team as a means
of accelerating improvement in burn care and optimizing outcomes constituted a
major component of his professional career, established his preeminence in the
field of burn care both nationally and internationally, and benefited all burn
patients. In 1974, Dr. Artz was presented with the Harvey Stuart Allen
Distinguished Service Award, which ironically he instituted in 1969.
The award provides complimentary Annual Meeting registration and hotel
accommodations; complimentary coach airfare for the recipient and spouse or
Burn Prevention Award
The Burn Prevention Award is given for contribution in at least one of four areas:
1) prevention shall have worldwide, nationwide, or statewide impact; 2) if on a
local level, it must be replicated in two or more local areas and serve as a model
prevention effort; 3) the collection and reporting of epidemiological data should
be such that it serves as the basis for state or national prevention efforts; 4) it
should have a major influence on shaping the careers of other burn prevention
workers. An individual is eligible each year if the work is of a new and significant
nature and fulfills one of the four criteria.
The award provides complimentary Annual Meeting registration, an engraved
plaque and honorarium of $1,500.
Nominations are sent either to the Secretary's office or to the Chairman of the
John A. Moncrief Award
John A. Moncrief, known to his friends as Jack, was one of the founders of the
American Burn Association and its third President. The son of an Army physician,
he was born in Manila, P.I. on July 22, 1924. He attended the Citadel and Cornell
University as an undergraduate and received his medical degree from Emory
University Medical School in 1948. He then entered the Army Medical Corps and
interned at Brooke General Hospital. Between 1950 and 1954 he completed his
training in surgery at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, with a year's interruption to
serve as Chief of General Surgery at the 8054 Mobile Surgical Hospital and the
10th Station Hospital in Korea. While at Barnes he initiated his long association
with Dr. Carl A. Moyer, whom he credited with awakening his interest in both
burns and surgical research.
His training completed, Dr. Moncrief spent a year as Chief of General Surgery at
Fort Sill Army Hospital. In 1955, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Surgical
Research Unit, then commanded by Dr. Curtis Artz with whom he began a
friendship that would persist and grow through the remainder of their lives.
During this three year assignment he focused his clinical and investigative skills
in wound management and, with Dr. Bruce MacMillan, carried out the first
clinical studies of massive burn wound excision.
Dr. Moncrief returned to the Surgical Research Unit in 1961 to serve as its
Commander and Director for the next seven years. His guidance was
instrumental in the development of Sulfamylon burn cream and the demonstration
of the clinical effectiveness of topical chemotherapy in preventing burn wound
sepsis. Multidisciplinary research, already a characteristic of the Unit, flowered
under his direction, and topics ranging from techniques of wound excision and
the use of temporary biologic dressings to resuscitation and post-burn
hypermetabolism were explored. His enthusiasm for surgical research and burn
care was contagious, and many surgeons assigned to the Unit, on returning home
after completing their military service, developed burn units of their own.
Dr. Moncrief retired from the Army in 1968 and joined Dr. Artz at the Medical
College of South Carolina as a Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery. In the
ensuing eight years, despite failing health, he participated in the development of
the Burn Unit there and was active in a number of national organizations. He
received the Harvey Stuart Allen Award in 1974, was the President of the
American Association for the Surgery for Trauma in that year, and gave the
Scudder Trauma Oration for the American College of Surgeons in 1977. His death
in 1979 brought to an untimely end a stellar career spanning a quarter century
during which his efforts and those of a few like him transformed burn care from
an onerous surgical duty to a dynamic and successful model of teamwork in the
care of the injured.

The John A. Moncrief Award is presented to fire services for outstanding
contribution in the area of burn prevention or burn care. The awardee can be an
individual or an organization. It was first presented in 1994.
Carl A. Moyer Resident Award
This award is given at the Annual Meeting for the best paper submitted by a
medical doctor who has not yet completed his/her formal training (resident or
medical student). Dr. Moyer (1908-1970) was a brilliant surgical investigator and
a charismatic teacher. He was deeply interested in the burn problem. Perhaps
his most important contribution was to stimulate a major interest in burns in a
sizable cohort of young surgeons, several of whom later have themselves become
leaders in the field. He introduced the topical use of silver nitrate to prevent
infection in major burns. His laboratory and clinical research emphasized and
elucidated the fundamental role of sodium salt solutions in burn/trauma
resuscitation and has enormously influenced modern medical-surgical practice.
He also pointed out the magnitude and potential physiological significance of
transcutaneous evaporative heat loss in the severely burned, work which
important enough itself has also stimulated many others to explore the causes of
post-burn hypermetabolism and its consequences. The Moyer award is an
eminently suitable memorial to this surgeon, scientist, and teacher.
The award is sponsored by the American Burn Association and carries with it a
$500 honorarium and medal. Application for this award is made by indicating on
the abstract form that the primary author would like to be considered for the
award, and submitting the abstract and a complete manuscript prior to their
respective deadline dates. Individual papers are judged by the Program
Committee and one is selected. The Committee may opt not to present this award
if no suitable paper is submitted.
Robert B. Lindberg Award
This award is given at the Annual Meeting for the best scientific paper submitted
by a non-physician. Robert B. Lindberg, PhD, (1914-1982) was an internationally
recognized microbiologist whose research career spanned more than half a
century. Dr. Lindberg's extensive knowledge of wound microbiology was
acquired during World War II and with the U.S. Army Surgical Research Team
during the Korean Conflict. During his long tenure at the U.S. Army Institute of
Surgical Research (1961-81), Dr. Lindberg was an integral member of the multidisciplinary
team that investigated the pathogenesis of burn would infection. He
actually examined and personally cultured wounds in performing extensive
research on the clinical microbiology of burn wounds. He instituted innovative
epidemiologic surveillance systems and identified sources of contamination in the
patient care environment. His findings were instrumental in defining the
