movements of wind. Similarly, <strong>the</strong> sphere may be limited or may<br />

expand <strong>to</strong> include all <strong>the</strong> vital surroundings i.e. <strong>the</strong> sphere where<br />

life exists, that of <strong>the</strong> atmosphere, <strong>the</strong> hydrosphere and <strong>the</strong><br />

lithosphere. This means that <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment is three-dimensi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

involving <strong>the</strong> ecological dimensi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> socio-ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

dimensi<strong>on</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> socio-cultural dimensi<strong>on</strong> (<strong>the</strong> system of<br />

values). This means that man lives in three envir<strong>on</strong>ments (4)<br />

interacting and affecting each o<strong>the</strong>r. They are:<br />

The Vital Envir<strong>on</strong>ment:<br />

This is <strong>the</strong> natural and original life envir<strong>on</strong>ment which Allah<br />

created and wherein human beings are <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e form am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

many o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

The Man-made Envir<strong>on</strong>ment<br />

It c<strong>on</strong>sists of things made by humans and introduced <strong>on</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

The Social Envir<strong>on</strong>ment<br />

It is a system whereby human communities run <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

social and ec<strong>on</strong>omic affairs, c<strong>on</strong>sisting of social cus<strong>to</strong>ms,<br />

administrative affairs, laws, and social as well as ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

instituti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

The envir<strong>on</strong>ment is looked at as a functi<strong>on</strong>al system which<br />

operates in a comprehensive manner via mutual relati<strong>on</strong>s between<br />

its organic and n<strong>on</strong>-organic comp<strong>on</strong>ents. The envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

system has its inputs—carrying and s<strong>to</strong>ring—and its outputs such<br />

as energy and basic products, all of which operate in natural<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. When <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental system is upset by human<br />

beings, it tends <strong>to</strong> reorganize itself at first. Through <strong>the</strong> act of<br />

recurrence, plants tend <strong>to</strong> c<strong>on</strong>stitute a stable plant community<br />

according <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> principle of flowing energy. Stability in ecological<br />

systems implies a dynamic balance between <strong>the</strong> input and <strong>the</strong><br />

output of energy and matter.<br />
