XCELLENCE

welcome back!
Dear East Ramapo Community,
This summer, the New York State Education Department announced that nine of the seventeen high-achieving/
gap-closing schools in Rockland County are in East Ramapo! In this era of high standards and accountability, this
is a remarkable achievement of which we can be proud. Such results are what is generated when our talented staff,
involved parents, dedicated administration and caring Board of Education work together to support and inspire
our students.
East Ramapo is a wondrous district of challenge and achievement. This calendar reflects our depth and richness.
Please enjoy it and use it throughout the year to keep abreast of district and school activities. In fact, I hope to
see you often at East Ramapo functions.
Best wishes for a healthy, happy and successful 2006/2007 school year for all of our students, staff and their families!
September
Sincerely,
Dr. Mitchell J. Schwartz
Superintendent
Getting Involved!
VOLUNTEERING is a very special way to contribute to our East Ramapo community, and
especially to our children, who are our future. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or
community member, the children of East Ramapo need you for a variety of volunteering
opportunities…from guest reading and one-on-one reading to being a mentor, class parent,
museum docent, home visitor or participant in Junior Achievement. We will find the perfect
fit for your interests and schedule. Please call 845-577-6167 to find out more.
INVOLVEMENT OF PARENTS and community residents in the educational process of
East Ramapo is crucial to the success of the children we educate. Involvement takes many
forms. These include participation in various district-wide planning and focus groups, as
well as direct involvement with students. To find out how you can help us help our children,
please call 577-6167.
THE PTA COUNCIL and its school units also offer wonderful opportunities for involvement,
sponsoring and helping to fund literally hundreds of activities for the District’s students. To
find out more about the PTA, please call one of the phone numbers listed on the last page
of this calendar.
ELA Testing
The Grades 3 through 8 tests in English Language Arts assesses
standard for reading, listening and writing.
In the Reading section of the ELA test, students read several passages
representing a variety of genres. For each passage, students apply
the skills and knowledge gained in the classroom by answering reading
comprehension questions that demonstrate their understanding of
the passages.
For the Listening section of the ELA test, students listen to a passage
and apply skills and knowledge gained in the classroom to answer
comprehension questions. The questions are designed to demonstrate
students’ understanding of the passage.
April
*Emergency Closings (Unused Emergency Closing Days)
It is the desire of the Board of Education that school not be in session on those days within this
school calendar that have been asterisked.
These days are Tuesday, February 20th and Monday, April 2nd
The asterisked (*) days may be required to fulfill the 181-day instructional school year. It is the
desire for the school district NOT to be in session on these dates. However, if schools are closed
for more than the days allotted for emergency closings (4 built in days) then the asterisked days may
be required as “School Days” to meet the instructional calendar. Therefore, students and staff are
advised NOT to make plans on these dates. It is hoped that the 4 built in days will be sufficient.
A two-hour early dismissal for students on specified Thursdays has been scheduled to allow for
staff development activities. Please note that while the district anticipates no reason to depart from
the staff development schedule, if for any reason the Board of Education determines these periods
should not be used for that purpose, these days would return to full days of instruction for students.
If any of the 4 emergency closing dates built into the calendar are not used, the Superintendent
will determine additional days off.
