Quarto, pp. 8, illustrated comprehensively; stapled as issued, filing holes as issued, about fine. $550 Very rare. Much on a few pages, some eighteen products described and beautifully illustrated, mostly two or three to a page. In our experience, Australian domestic trade catalogues before the First World War are very rarely seen, the consequence, one suspects, of wartime waste-paper drives on the one hand and of post-war changes in price, taste, and technology. The following group from 1911 – 1912 from Harris, Scarfe, the prominent and long-lived (and recently sadly disgraced) retailer, is truly exceptional.

HARRIS, SCARFE & Co., Limited. <strong>Catalogue</strong> of Grates, Stoves, and Mantels including Air-Pit Fires, Ovens, Ranges, Wallpapers, Ceilings, Tiles, etc. Adelaide, Donald Taylor Collotype Co. [for Geo. P. Harris, Scarfe & Co., Limited], 1912. Quarto, pp. 56 + two plates in colour (“Patterns of Flooring Tiles”), comprehensively illustrated; original brown linen-grain wrappers printed in red, filing holes as issued, fine and crisp. $1450 Very rare. The title describes the contents pretty exhaustively and the illustrations flesh out the bald words. The Harris, Scarfe catalogues from this period are uniformly comprehensive in illustration. The firm had several branches: Adelaide, Broken Hill, Perth, Port Adelaide, Fremantle, and Kalgoorlie. These catalogues not only served these branches, not all of which could carry the same extensive stock, but all places in between, where illustration was essential if the customer was to make an informed order.
