LOOKING BACK ON THOSE DAYS SO LONG AGO, I CAN NOW SEE - EVEN IF I DIDN’T KNow or would never have considered it at the time - how my time with the Doctor was almost at an end. It’s not as if I was growing weary or restless of my travels with him – absolutely not! – but by that point if I had stayed much longer I would never have been able to leave willingly, let alone survive without him. I’m not saying I was becoming dependent on the Doctor; it was more on the lines of my life was quickly becoming co-existent with his. It had been very different when I first met him, the dandy Doctor. Contrary to popular belief, I wasn’t an immediately eager member of the Time Lord’s travelling troupe. No, in the beginning I had a day job, a flat, a car, and a surprisingly normal life of my own outside of any extracurricular travels in space and time. To think I was ever actually content with that. Is it so hard to believe Let’s establish a context: Say the dandy Doctor had come to me one day and said: ‘Let’s go to Florana, Sarah.’ Then if he could persuade me to join him we might go to that planet via Exxilon or Psyogy or some other Universal Wonder, and then pop back so I could catch my weekend PAGE 36

The next time we might go travelling might not be for some weeks, during which time some Earthbound danger or an alien invasion might chance to irritate the Brigadier, which would always catch the dandy Doctor’s attention, and usually mine as well. Of course, I still had my own mundane responsibilities, so when my life outside of UNIT conflicted with the dandy Doctor’s abundantly open schedule, then someone else might take their place by his side, like the Brigadier, or John, or ever dear Jeremy. So many old friends knew the Doctor then; it’s a shame Brendan never got to meet him. But after the change the bohemian Doctor came along and everything was different: he cut ties with UNIT, only made an occasional, grudging visit to help the Brigadier, and broadened his exceptionally widejourneying horizons. I think it was his way of getting back to himself after living on Earth for so long, about living a Time Lord’s life again. And then after Harry left, or rather opted not to risk another dangerous trip, I was the only thing to remind the Doctor of his time bound to Earth. And yet he wanted me to stay. And our life together was …indescribable. Oh, but don’t think there weren’t times I wanted to strangle him with his scarf or poke his bulging eyes; he could be that infuriatingly aloof. But most of the time I just wanted to stop and smell the air, or just stare at him and smile. Yes, I really was that happy. Except for one thing: the absence of friends. Like I said, early on the bohemian Doctor had quickly distanced himself from his colleagues at UNIT, and soon each visit with them had one more friend gone: first Mike, then the Brigadier, then John and Harry, until at last when we battled the Krynoids at that fanatic Harrison Chase’s awful castle there was only UNIT personnel fighting with us, but no UNIT friends. That’s what made this adventure so much the more personally thrilling for me: everyone was there, and I mean everyone. Even Osgood had been in Geneva to see us off with the Earth Reptiles. The fact that we were going back to Antarctica with everyone in tow just made the trip feel…more right somehow, like a make-up for missed opportunities. Little did we know how much we were about to lose. But there’s no need to get ahead of ourselves. We only need to find our place. And at this point we, (or they - forgive my need to distance myself from what would soon become extraordinarily unpleasant events) PAGE 37
