H- e paced the perimeter of his temporary office at UNIT Central HQ in Geneva, Switzerland, and pondered upon the idea. Thinking on his feet had become a habitual custom of the Brigadier during periods of rest in order to keep his thoughts active and running, and yet of late his thoughts had often turned towards stopping. How could it be – He was a lifelong solider from a family of servicemen stretching back generations. His own service to Queen and Country had been notable and unique: as head officer of the British arm of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce for more than a decade, he had personally led Her Majesty’s best troops in combat against many forces of domestic and extraterrestrial origin to protect the safety of the entire world, and beyond. His career experience was both laudable and unforgettable, and yet more and more he thought of leaving it all behind. Perhaps doing so would be a blessing in disguise, considering the personal sacrifices he had been forced to make to honour the silence of his duty: his marriage, his wife Fiona, and dear Kate, the daughter she had taken with her.
