Dear Parents, Families, and Friends:
I hope that this letter finds you all well, enjoying the holiday warmth with family and friends. It will
likely be very hectic for you over the next few weeks and the thoughts of your cadet sailing over the
horizon on the annual semester at sea may unfortunately add to that anxiety. Our choice for an annual
winter sea term makes perfect sense, however, from an academic vantage point, providing a wonderful
break between two grueling 16-week academic semesters. It also gives cadets, who have chosen the
“road less traveled”, the ability to finally brag to their counterparts at ordinary colleges about their good
life at sea in the Caribbean. Whether this is your first sea term or you and your family are experienced
cruisers, I want to draw your attention to some important points for Sea Term 2011.
The sea term is one of the highlights of the Academy year. Not only is it a tradition that links the
current Academy cadets to those who furled sails or stoked the coal fired boiler aboard U.S.S. Enterprise
over a century ago, it also is the practical manifestation of each cadet’s academic efforts over the past
year. Within each cadet it will be a time of growth, independence, and self-confidence as they venture
to sea far from family and the familiar. If you wish to be on the dock for departure on Sunday, 9 January
2011, Captain Bushy will allow visitors aboard from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The Bay State
Conference Center and Fantail will be open as warming stations and Chartwell’s Dining Service will
have hot beverages available. The ship’s sailing time is 12:38 p.m.
Although your cadet may be away from home, you can follow the voyage of the T.S. Kennedy from
home by visiting our website at www.maritime.edu, then clicking on “Sea Term 2011” in the left hand
column. This will bring you to our Follow the Voyage site (FTV) containing weather, location and
Captain’s Blog plus photographs when available. This year we have also embarked Ms. Rhonda Moniz
who will update FTV and liaison with teachers whose classrooms are also following the voyage of T.S.
Kennedy.
If you have an emergency situation during Sea Term, or even if you only have some questions, we have
contact information for three staff members listed on the enclosure - CAPT Ed Rozak, LCDR Sam
White and LT Dana Ferris - who have volunteered to be available to you throughout the sea term.

All are veterans of many sea terms and will help you resolve the problem or ease your concerns. Please
feel free to call them day or night.
If you wish to send money to your cadet during Sea Term you may send a check directly to the Business
Office or pay online. Please plan accordingly as funds must be transferred a minimum of
3 days prior to the arrival at port. To pay online, go to our website (www.maritime.edu), click on the
Quick Links window on the left side of the screen and click on Business Office. On the right side of the
Business Office screen you will find BizOffice Links, where you may click on the appropriate link –
“Pay by Credit Card” (a 2.65% convenience fee applies) or “Pay by Check” – provide the required
student information, and enter the amount in the “Sea-Term Bank” box. Your cadet will be notified that
these funds are available and instructed to report to the Commandant of Cadets to retrieve them at the
appropriate time.
I have enclosed the mailing addresses for our various ports of call. Do not send packages or anything of
real value through the mail. For security reasons, the ship will not accept any packages. Please note
the lead-time required for mail. There are a few extra steps in handling mail for arriving ships and
allowing the extra time is important. If your letter should miss the ship, our port agent will collect such
mail and return it to MMA rather than forward it to the next port and have it traveling around the
Caribbean for a few weeks. We will deliver all “missed mail” to the cadets at the start of the spring
semester.
The ship will return from the 2011 voyage and dock in Buzzards Bay on Sunday, 20 February 2011 at
approximately 10:42 a.m. I hope to see you all on the dock as we welcome home our seasoned travelers.

P.S. Please note that eligibility for Sea Term requires successful completion of applicable
prerequisites. After the Academic Board meets on 27 December, a very small number of cadets
may have to be removed from the Sea Term to attend to their academic deficiencies. Cadets may
contact the Registrar’s Office with any questions regarding their academic standing.

The below information should be provided to all friends and family that may have an interest in the upcoming Sea Term.
Mail should be sent via AIRMAIL only, posted about ten days prior to our arrival date. Only packages received from our
campus will be accepted aboard because of our security measures. Please contact any of the below officers if you need to
have critically important materials be sent to the ship.
All ship’s crew and cadets may register for an email account that uses satellites. Unlike shore side systems, this system
charges for each message, based upon the quantity of text. The system can handle attachments and pictures, but users should
be warned that this can drive up the cost significantly.
