Study Abroad, A Life Changing Experience Staidéar thar lear – Saol eile, tuiscint eile

Study Abroad – A Life Changing Experience
In today’s global society adding an international dimension to
your studies will greatly enhance your experience of student life
and will prepare you for a better future. A period of study spent
abroad will enrich you personally and academically and offer a
significant advantage for your future career. University College
Cork offers a wide range of study abroad options across the
globe. Through the ERASMUS programme, the University has
developed extensive links with partner universities in virtually all
member states of the EU. UCC also offers a wide range of links
with North American, Chinese and Australian universities.
Other study abroad opportunities are available in Malaysia,
Mexico, Singapore and South Korea.
North America
UCC is involved in a number of scholarship and exchange
programmes which enable students to study at a partner
university in the United States of America or Canada.
Options currently available include Boston College, Salve
Regina University in Rhode Island, the University of California,
the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the University of
Montana, the University of Texas at Dallas, Washington College,
Maryland, the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago,
Concordia University in Montreal and St. Mary’s University in
Nova Scotia.
Students pursuing the Bachelor of Commerce degree have the
opportunity to spend the third year of the programme at partner
universities in the US and Canada. BComm students can choose
from a number of different options including Babson College in
Massachusetts, North Carolina State University at Raleigh, the
University of Cincinnati in Ohio, Pace University in New York City,
Suffolk University in Massachusetts, University of San Diego,
California and the University of Ottawa Business School.
The Department of Music offers attractive exchange opportunities
at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and Wheaton College in
Massachusetts, while students pursuing the BCL International
degree may spend an academic year at Temple University Law
School in Philadelphia or St Louis University Law School in Missouri
(there are also European options available under this programme
at the University of Oslo, Leiden University and Charles University
in Prague). Opportunities are also available to students enrolled in
the BA (Drama and Theatre Studies – International).
In addition, each year one UCC student is selected to study
at the University of Maine under the George J. Mitchell Peace
Scholarship programme. There are also opportunities to study at
a range of universities in states such as Illinois, Kansas, Missouri,
Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.
Australia
UCC’s partner universities in Australia include :
Edith Cowan University, Western Australia
Deakin University, Victoria
Griffith University, Queensland
University of Tasmania
Macquarie University, New South Wales
University of Western Sydney, New South Wales
University of Wollongong, New South Wales
Europe
The ERASMUS programme enables students from different
programmes to undertake up to a year of undergraduate or
postgraduate study at a continental University. The linguistic,
intellectual, cultural and social value of the period spent abroad
has made participation in the programme a highly popular
choice for students.
Programmes at UCC which provide for a compulsory year
abroad in Europe include:
• BA (Language and Cultural Studies) Pathway
• BA (European Studies) Pathway
• BA (Drama and Theatre Studies – International) Pathway
• BCL French/ BCL German/ BCL International
• BComm (International) - French/German/Spanish/Italian/
Irish. Students of the BComm International/Irish also have the
opportunity to choose a placement with an associated project
in an organisation which conducts its business through the
medium of Irish.
In all cases, you will follow a programme at one of our partner
institutions in Europe where you will improve your language
proficiency and gain insights into other academic, cultural and
social systems. On your return to UCC, full academic credit will
be awarded for courses taken.
You pay no extra fees at the partner university and you will also receive
a modest grant. UCC has over 150 partner universities across Europe in
cities such as Barcelona, Munich, Paris, Rome and Vienna.
China
If you opt to pursue the BA (Chinese Studies) Pathway or the
BComm International/Chinese Studies you will spend the
third year of the programme at a Chinese partner university
improving your language and intercultural skills. Opportunities
to study in China, at the postgraduate level, are also available.
Further information on all of these options is available at
