Tropical Storm Fay was not “just another storm”. It will always be
remembered as the storm that took the life of a beloved employee,
co-worker and friend, Curtis King. This is a tremendous loss to our
Talquin family and community and we are greatly saddened by this tragedy, and
our thoughts and prayers are continually for Curtis’ family.
The work of a lineman is difficult during normal conditions, much less during
storms, and we commend the dedication of our crews, contractors, and their families.
Cooperatives in Florida are exposed to hurricanes and storms, surrounded
by hundreds of trees and sometimes dense vegetation, which make a lineman’s job
even more difficult.
Forty mile an hour winds and hundreds of downed trees left 13,000 members
without power the night of Friday, August 22, 2008. Talquin worked relentlessly
throughout the weekend, and power was restored in a timely manner. Talquin
called in the support of 46 contract and cooperative crews, which consisted of over
200 additional people and over 135 trucks, to assist in the restoration effort in
order to minimize the number of days our members would be without power.
Flooding and inaccessibility prevented some areas from service restoration.
We worked closely with local officials and Emergency Management and appreciate
their hard work and commitment to our community.
We would like to thank members for their kind remarks, phone calls, and letters.
These uplifting gestures were greatly appreciated by our employees. It is in
a time such as this, that we remember the sacrifices that have been made to bring
electricity and water services to rural areas. We are blessed to be a part of such a
caring community and are thankful for our Talquin family.
Talquin Electric Board meeting will be held the third
Wednesday of the month at Headquarters Office in
Talquin Quincy Operations, July 22, 2008
Quincy, Florida, at 7:00 p.m. Notice of any changes
and special meetings will be posted at business offices. Talquin Service — Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
Curtis King worked for Talquin
Electric since March, 2001.
Prior to 2001, Curtis was
employed by the City of Quincy as a
lineman. He was known for his love
for his family, his church, and the
outdoors. Curtis served as the Vice
President of the Gadsden County
Horseman’s Association and volunteered
his time with 4-H Gadsden
County Saddle Club and on mission
projects for those in need. He was
committed to helping others and will
be dearly missed by his Talquin family.
The family of
Curtis King,
who gave his
life helping
others on
August 22,
2008, has
set up an Education Fund for
Kendall King at Envision Credit
Union, 517 W. Jefferson St.,
Quincy, FL 32351, to be used
for educational purposes for his
daughter Kendall. Contributions
may be made at any Envision
Credit Union by making the
check out to “Kendall King
Education Account.”
In Loving Memory of Curtis King
Dedicated Lineman, Co-Worker and Friend
A
Lineman usually starts out as a younger man who has seen those
guys working on power lines and is fascinated with the work.
Maybe a family member or other acquaintance is working in the
trade and following in their footsteps seems to be an interesting thing to do.
Either way, this young man enters into one of the closest bonds with fellow
workers there is. He begins his career as everyone’s grunt/groundman
or the “low man on the totem pole” - getting all the hard labor on the ground
while learning what safety, dedication, respect, hard work and helping others is
all about.
Months and maybe years pass and he thinks to himself “One day that will
be me, lead Lineman, working on the pole or in the bucket.” Then he makes
Apprentice Lineman because he has shown dedication and respect for the
profession, and the skills required to excel in this career. He has also gained
respect from his fellow lineman “brothers” for the sacrifices given, i.e. leaving
family at home during a birthday party, sick child, half mowed yard, or a storm
threatening his own home and property because duty calls.
His family’s support for this job he loves is most appreciated and important
for the Lineman’s happiness and success.
As Apprentice he begins climbing the power poles, working out of the
bucket, training day and night, wet, hot, and cold.
After completion of Apprentice training, the title, Journeyman Lineman,
is earned. The Journeyman Lineman has now not one but many skilled, highlevel
hazardous work limits that appeal to a hardy few. He now leads his crew
to be safe, dedicated, hardworking and respectful employees.
Curtis King was one of these linemen. We, as brothers at Talquin, will
continue the hard work, dedication, and respect to this trade we love and will
always remember our brother Curtis and his family for their sacrifice.
Attend The 2008 Annual Meeting, September 27th
Registration Begins At 8:30 A.M.
Talquin Electric is pleased to host its 68th annual membership meeting at James A. Shanks Middle School gymnasium,
located at 1400 W. King Street in Quincy, Florida, on Saturday, September 27, 2008. Registration and
voting will begin at 8:30 a.m.
One of the most important features
of the cooperative form of business is the
annual meeting. The primary purpose of
the annual meeting is to provide an opportunity
for you, as a member, to participate
in the election of representatives to your
Cooperative’s Board of Trustees, to pass on
reports for the past fiscal year, and to transact
such other business as may be necessary.
In trustee election and other matters that must
be decided on by a vote of the membership, a majority
of the voters rule. Each member is entitled to
only one vote (in cases where both the husband and
wife are present, either one or the other may vote,
but not both). Only one duly authorized representative
of each organization is eligible, after completing
and signing the form provided, to register and to
participate in the voting and drawing of prizes.
Entertainment will be provided by “Country Connections”, who will
play a variety of country/western and gospel tunes for your listening pleasure.
Registration and voting will begin at 8:30 a.m.,
followed by the business portion of the meeting at
10:00 a.m. The meeting is expected to conclude by
11:30 or 11:45 a.m. Free soft drinks will be provided
and many valuable prizes will be given away, including
a large flat screen TV, a Wii game system, Ipod shuffles,
gas cards, a trolling motor and much more. Last year we had a great
turn out. Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend this important
event.
Appreciation from Members for
Tropical Storm Fay Response
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and all of the dedicated hard working staff of Talquin Electric! I was so
impressed with the care and assistance I received during our recent power outages related to Fay. Each time I called every
person was emphatic, understanding and helpful. When the line crews came they worked quickly to resolve the havoc one
pine tree did to the lines. I’m sure that everyone was tired and stressed, but still had a quick smile and understanding of
what it is like to be without power.
