Talquin Electric recently partnered with the Florida Sheriff’s Association to fight growing copper 

theft in Florida. Homeowners, farmers, churches, and construction sites are just a partial list of 

the recent victims who have been hit by this devastating crime. In just minutes, thieves can pull 

the copper wire from your home or business and cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. 

An elderly couple who lives in the area recently left their home for about an hour to run an errand. When 

they returned they found their home had been wiped clean of all the wire in the house – thousands of 

dollars’ worth of damage for a few hundred dollars’ worth of copper. 

This is a growing national epidemic and the Department of Energy estimates that just this past year over 

one billion dollars’ worth of damage was caused by copper theft alone. 

Do not become a victim! You can protect your home and business with the following tips from the 

Better Business Bureau: 

• When away from home, make sure your house and outbuildings are securely locked. 

• Establish a neighborhood watch and question anyone in your neighborhood who does not live 

there and appears to be working on a home. 

• Let your neighbors know when you will be out of town. 

• Outside dogs are good deterrents. 

• Install security lighting. 

• Store all tools and wire cutters in a secure location. 

• Secure construction sites and consider hiring a night security guard. 

• For larger targets, like air conditioning units, keep the area fenced in and the fences locked. 

• Move dumpsters and ladders away from buildings to make it difficult for thieves to reach rooftop 

refrigeration units. 

• Marking items with bright paint and etching an identification number at various places can make 

materials stand out. 

Also, please call 911 if you see anyone around a Talquin utility pole or substation that is not clearly 

identified as a Talquin employee. Report any suspicious loads of copper or scrap metal that you see while 

traveling. Help stop these criminals. You can make a difference by calling in any suspicious activity.

Electricity is a form of energy that is an essential part of our lives. Teaching the community about the power 

of electricity and how to stay safe around it is a top priority at Talquin. Therefore, we would like to offer your

the help of the “Power Town” display table (shown above), we are able to show students the hazards of 

electrical lines and how to stay safe around them. When the display table is energized, it has 10,000 volts 

of electricity flowing through the miniature power lines giving it the ability to actually spark when objects 

touch it. This realistic demonstration gives students a visual lesson in the importance of avoiding contact 

with electricity. Along with electrical safety, this 45 minute presentation will also teach students where

IMPROVEMENTS TO AUTOMATED 

OUTAGE REPORTING OPTION 

Talquin has just implemented a revised version of the AUTOMATED outage 

reporting system that enables the caller to report an interruption in service by 

entering a choice of account number, meter number, phone or first alternate 

phone number. The account and meter numbers are proprietary numbers which 

are assigned and maintained by Talquin and are not duplicated in our database. 

These numbers are provided monthly on the billing statement. The meter number 

is physically located on the meter for the service. Refrigerator magnets are being 

distributed with the TEC-Meter package which contain our outage reporting 

numbers as well as a space to record your account number. 

Rusty Rodgers, who served Talquin for 

ten years as a water and wastewater employee, passed away 

recently. His presence among us will be deeply missed and our thoughts 

and prayers continue to be with the Rodgers family.
