Classy Bonnydale Simmental to $9250 - Simmental Australia

THE celebration of 40 years
of Simmental breeding
attracted a large crowd of new
and return buyers to
Bonnydale Farms' 17th annual
on-property bull sale at
Bridgetown on Monday.
Four decades has seen the
Introvigne family's herd grow
from the initial three
Simmental-cross calves born
via AI, to the pioneering of
the introduction of fully
imported Black Simmental
genetics in WA, and at
Monday's sale resulted in the
offering of 53 outstanding
bulls.
As per usual, a large list of
buyer registrations were
written down but following
the beef market trend,
producers were very selective
in their bidding throughout the
auction.
This contributed to a
clearance rate of just over 60
per cent under the hammer
and to an average of $4697,
which was back by $167 on
last year's overall result.
Despite the average and
clearance rate being
disappointing, buyers headed
to the yards after the sale
proceedings to purchase their
selected sires at the auction
reserve price.
This post-sale activity led to
a slight increase in clearance
and gross for the family with a
further three bulls selling
when Farm Weekly left the
property.
Strong supporter of the
Bonnydale brand Ian Collie,
Collie Cattle Company and
Triple 'C' Black Simmental
stud, Kyneton, Victoria, made
the trip across to pay the sale's
$9250 top price for a young,
stylish Black Simmental bull.
The 654kg Bonnydale
Tanker H200 (P) (ET) was
purchased by Mr Collie in
shares with astute commercial
breeder Graham Loyd, Nell
Partnership, Springsure,
Queensland and was thought
so highly of by the Introvignes
that it was sold under a three
quarter share and possession.
When the thick, deepbodied,
heavily muscled
youngster walked into the
ring, buyers were on the edge
of their seats as this bull was
the first son of TNT Tanker
U263 to be offered at auction
in the country.
Bidding started at $5000
and rose quickly until the
hammer fell at $9250 on the
January 2012-drop calf, which
expressed excellent raw data
figures of 7mm for P8 and rib
fat, 113cm 2 for EMA and
3.5pc for IMF.

Mr Collie bought the bull
in shares with Graham
Loyd, Nell Partnership,
Springsure, Queensland.
Mr Collie said he has been
purchasing Black Simmental
genetics from the Introvigne
family since they introduced
the blacks to their sale in
2007.
"The bull brings fresh
genetics to Australia and as a
fully imported embryo I liked
his structural soundness,
balance and calving ease
potential," he said.
"He had an excellent
birthweight of only 37kg
considering his high EMA
figure of 113cm 2 .
"He is also positive in rib
and rump fats and his IMF
figure is an indication of his
high carcase quality which
will satisfy the concerned
consumer."
In Mr Collie's operation,
Tanker will naturally service
60 mature females and through
AI, be used over another 50 to
60 stud and commercial
SimAngus females.
On Mr Collie’s
recommendation the top price
bull was bought in shares by
Mr Loyd to be used heavily in
his commercial composite
herd with the intention to
retain some replacement
heifers.
During the sale Mr Collie
secured another three Black
Simmental bulls for the
reserve sale price of $4000
each.

Not leaving until buying
what he came for, was Rod
Newnham, New Blacks Angus
and Black Simmental stud,
Euroa, Victoria, when he paid
$6500 for the second toppriced
Black Simmental bull
and $3500 for the top-priced
SimAngus bull.
The February 2012-dop
Black Simmental, Bonnydale
Tanker H218 (P) (ET) was
again sired by TNT Tanker
U263 and had test numbers of
6mm for rib and rump fat,
105cm 2 EMA, 3.5pc IMF and
weighed 632kg.
Further back in the
catalogue the SimAngus sire
Bonnydale SA Equator H324
(P) who was sired by Vermont
BT Equator D028, was swiftly
snapped up by Mr Newnham
when it expressed figures of
7mm for rib and rump fat,
101cm 2 for EMA, 3.4pc for
IMF and weighed in at 560kg
at 11 months of age.
Mr Newnham runs 200 stud
breeders and purchased the
top price SimAngus bull as he
was an outcross, had a low
birthweight and great genetics
behind him.
"He will be used on first
and second calvers," he said.
Mr Newnham is no stranger
to Bonnydale genetics and not
only bought the two bulls this
season but purchased a sire at
the 2011 sale and has acquired
semen shares in bulls before.
A fresh face to the
Bonnydale clientele list was
Graham Larke, JimJam
Simmental stud, Ravenswood,
when he fought hard to secure
a deep-flanked, heavy-boned,
soft-muscled Simmental bull
for the $7250 top price.
The 22-month-old
Bonnydale Kojak (P) was
sired by Caringa Jet Stream
and had EBVs of +4.3 for
birthweight, +26, +41 and +44
for 200, 400 and 600-day
weights, +3 for milk and
measured +1.0 for EMA.
Mr Larke said Kojak will be
used over 25 mature stud cows
and his female progeny will
be kept as replacements.
"I liked his temperament,
soft muscle pattern, good
growth rates and that he was a
poll," he said.
"This is the first time I have
purchased from Bonnydale so
I look forward to infusing
their genetics into my herd."
Others to pay top prices for
the quality offering of
traditional Simmental bulls,
were loyal clients BJ & FH
Tomas, Cundinup, when they
secured the first Simmental
bull to be offered, Bonnydale
Kingswood (P) for $6000, the
second youngest Simmental
bull Bonnydale Kerang for
$7000 and Bonnydale Kidman
(P) for $6250.
All three aged 21.5 to 23-
month-olds were thick, deepbodied,
muscular bulls and
sired by home-bred sires.
Elders auctioneer Dennis
Roberts said buyers were
selective on what was probably
the best quality yarding of
bulls at Introvigne's sale.
"Black Simmental buyers
were selective and although
they had the opportunity to
appreciate the genetic
investment, it wasn't taken
up," he said.
"The yarding of Simmentals
were certainly the best I have
seen with very thick,
moderate-framed, soft-muscled
bulls selling at an increased
sale average compared to last
year.
"The limited number of
SimAngus sold was mainly
due to buyers being able to
buy Black Simmentals at
reasonable prices.
"Overall the sale prices were
a reflection of where the beef
market is at."
