A Look at London
London Scale Model Show
2005
The folks at IPMS London celebrated their
25 th anniversary in style this year by hosting
the London Scale Model Show on October
15 th . IPMS London should be congratulated
for a show that was both well run and well
attended, with a great vendor area, and a
good number of models on the tables. A nice
touch was our club logo being prominently
displayed throughout the morning of the show
via a rotating screen show above the podium,
which acknowledged the support of the
shows sponsors.
Some of the “usual suspects” (namely Sandy
and Wayne) from the de Havilland Scale
Modellers participated, and our fearless
leader Mr. Fraser even made a triumphant
return to the competitive modelling scene. In
total our three members entered 5 models in
the competition, and the club “batting average” definitely got a boost by the results. Those five
models accrued five category awards (three 3 rd, one 2 nd and one 1 st ), as well as three “Best Of”
theme awards, including Best Recon Vehicle of Show, Best Royal Navy Subject of Show
(interestingly won by an A/C and not a ship), and Best Aircraft of Show.
More images and details from the show can be seen in the “From the Field” section on page 7
of this issue. We all look forward to IPMS London’s next show.
On The Table
There was another selection of finely crafted models brought in for display
for the October’s meeting.
On the armour front, Sandy McRorie brought in
his almost completed Sherman Ic Firefly, being
put together using the Tamiya M4, A Formation
turret, AFV suspension, and Aber photoetch
set. Sandy is producing this one to compete for
the Best Sherman award at this years Ajax
show at the end of the month.
Derek Pennington brought in a beautiful 1/48
Dassault Falcon 10, done in a very striking French
Naval scheme. Derek informed us that he used
Revell’s reissue of the Hasegawa kit to produce this
gem
Continuing on in the naval theme, Commissar
Iain Fraser brought in an interesting Russian K-
123 Alpha class submarine. This was the 1/400
kit from Maquette completed OOB and finished
using Tamiya and Gunze paints..
Last but not least, Wayne Bowman
brought in his 1/72 Italeri A-7 Corsair II to
show it’s progress since last meeting. It
may even be completed for the next
meeting.
Club Build 2005, North
American T-28Trojan
by Joe Sheppard
Introduction
This years Club Contest, anything from
1965 to 1975, presented a huge spectrum
of choice and after much deliberation I
duly purchased a 1/72 Heller Vought
Crusader and a 1/72 ModelCraft
deHavilland Sea Vixen. Closer
examination of the Crusader revealed that
is was the extended life version for the
French Navy from the early 1990’s; however
the Sea Vixen was bang on 1975.
Construction of the Sea Vixen ground to a
halt as the kit proved to have a few
problems, the mould having seen better
days. So with only months to go the search
resumed and ended up at the other end of
the time frame just scraping into 1965 with a
North American T-28 Trojan of the 1 st Air
Commando in Viet Nam from the 1/72 Heller
kit.
Assembly
The kit consists of three sprues moulded in
silver-grey with raised detail and a clear
sprue with a one-piece canopy. The decal
sheet contains markings for the 1st Air
Commando and a French T-28 Fennec in
Algeria; unfortunately this aircraft was used
in 1961.
Construction began with the cockpit which
consists of a tub, instrument panels, seats
and control columns. The instrument panels
were first painted white and then finished in
black, a pin was then used to scribe some
markings on the dials. The remaining parts
were then painted in different shades of
black and assembled; the rollover frame
was omitted, as photos showed that is was
not installed on this version. The cockpit
assembly was then located and glued to
one fuselage half and the other half joined.
The instructions indicate the right upper
wing panel should be assemble to the onepiece
lower wing, the fuselage assembly
secured followed by the left upper panel
although careful positioning is required to
ensure that the wing is level. The horizontal
stabilizers were assembled, medium CA
being used to fill these and the upper
fuselage to wing joins. The engine was
painted steel with a grey crankcase, the
inside of the cowl painted aluminum along
with the wheel wells, after inserting the
engine into the cowl it was assembled to the
fuselage again careful positioning required
to ensure a good fit
(cont’d on pg. 4)
Build Bytes (cont’d from pg 3) – T-28Trojan
Finishing
All the join lines were cleaned up and the
model painted Light Gull Grey overall,
Model Master acrylic being used. The wing
walks and fuselage exhaust stain panels
were painted flat black and the entire model
given a coat of Future, I was able to break
off the wing pitot probe despite it being less
than a ¼ inch long. The landing gear was
painted and assembled along with the gear
doors revealing that not enough nose weight
had been added.
The decals were then applied, these slide
into position and conform well the only
exception being the sharks mouth on the
cowl which still had some wrinkles after
several applications of Micro Sol; as I was
going try a little weathering these were
trimmed of with a new #11 blade giving a
chipped look. The decals were sealed with
another coat of Future followed by a coat of
clear matte acrylic. The canopy was masked
and the frames painted black followed by
light grey, it was then affixed with Micro
Kristal Klear and the olive drab anti-glare
panel masked and painted. A new pitot
probe was made from stretched sprue and
installed along with the painted up propeller
and rocket pods completing assembly.
Trying something new I attempted using
ground pastel to add exhaust streaks but it
seems the clear matte acrylic did not have
enough texture to hold the powder, I’ll have
to read those clinic notes again.
Conclusion
Three models started one completed, so
many subjects so little time, maybe next
years contest should be a little narrower say
“deHavilland products”, the Sea Vixen may
even be sorted out by then.
Joe Sheppard
And the Winner is…
We had one of our best ever raffles at the October meeting, both in terms of items being
raffled, and overall proceeds. Wayne Bowman won a “nearly new” compressor/air tank with
regulator and moisture trap, generously donated by Lino Campoli. Terry Cooper won the
draw for the B-29 Osprey book and some great decals generously donated by Mike Grant
ALL RISE: A Message from the Chief
A Modelling Fairy Tale:
The Continuing Saga of Chip,
Chatter, Buck and the Other
Woodland Modellers
by: Iain Fraser
Will trade acorns for
styrene and superglue
(continued from DH Scale, Edition 11, page 5 and 6)
It has been a whole year since we visited
our forest dwelling friends in their large
corporate territory, and life has been good to
these forest creatures over the past four
seasons. The sun has shone on most days,
and there has been a lot to do. Chip, the
industrious chipmunk, Chatter, an equally
industrious but slightly fuzzier squirrel, and
Buck, a noble and stately elk continue with
their routines in the forest during the day,
but now one evening every month they meet
under the big oak tree with the rest of the
Deciduous Homebodies Scale Modeller’s
(DHSM) Club. They talk about plastic
modelling, the hobby in general, and what
they are currently working on. Under the big
oak tree is not suitable at times for their get
togethers, and they move into the Cave
when the weather and light become an
issue.
This merry band of forest dwellers has
grown since we last visited them. With the
expanding membership, the ideas as to
what they can do also grow. Derk, the wise
old buffalo was instrumental in obtaining a
charter membership for the club in the larger
national group the “International Poplar
Modellers Society” (IPMS). That step has
lifted many branches and exposed many
opportunities to the club that may have
remained hidden. A couple of the
Shutterbugs in the group have enthralled
the members with images of far off places
and shows that they have visited. There
have even been workshops to show new or
different techniques to anyone who will
listen.
Our dedicated little group apparently are not
satisfied to just sit back on their furry little
() haunches and let the world of modelling
come to them at its leisure. They have been
fund raising to gather enough twigs and
pebbles to, at least partially, pay for road
trips. There has been a deep-set desire, on
the part of many of these critters, to actually
see the real worldly wonders that they
model. Recently, a large number sallied
forth to the nether regions of the world to
view and experience a collection of winged
wonders gathered on the other side of the
lake. A good time was had by all, and the
funds raised help to pay for the nuts, leaves
and seed they enjoyed for lunch. There
must be a mention of the ever-helpful Bear,
the overseer of the forest’s recreational
activities, for his additional support of this
adventure.
The forest is changing. The world of
modelling is changing. The Deciduous
Homebodies Scale Modeller Club will be
changing too. New ideas, new creatures
and new adventures will surely fill the pages
of their newsletter, and this is good because
the greatest benefit of a club is the exposure
to something new.
(Cont’d on pg 6)
A Message from the Chief (cont’d from pg 5)
This fairy tale is a bit hokey, but it does
reflect the life of the DH Scale Modellers. As
a club, we have done many things in the
past two years that others only talk about.
For a club that has only been around for two
years, I think we have made an impact on
the local modelling scene. There have been
public displays, contest sponsorships,
creation of our own web site, and support
for other clubs listed on “DONE THAT” list.
This same list continues to grow with each
seminar, road trip, guest speaker, and
meeting. That does not mean that the “TO
DO” list is blank. Club contests, other road
trips, more seminars and presentations fill
the pages, and each get together adds to
the possibilities on that list. As the President
of the Chapter, I am proud of our club, the
people in the club and of all the things that
we have achieved. There have been
projects by individuals that have benefited
all of us, and group efforts that we all can be
proud of.
The future has not been shaped yet, and
with a little filling, sanding, filing and a good
coat of paint, it will look even better.
