Editorial
Instead of wishing you in this spring issue of the ISMA bulletin all the best for a nice sailing season again, we
prefer to present you the portfolio of Gilles Favez, the official ISMA photographer. He selected some of his impressions
of the 2007 and 2008 International Championships and will inspire all of you to prepare the yachts for
the coming season, to organise your crew and to start some training as to have a lot of fuin in the coming races.
Check the new racing rules 2009-2012 and be sure that your running and standing rig will withstand all the efforts
over the year. Enjoy sailing and live a nice friendship with your crew and your competitors.
ISMA News International 6mJI Association Bulletin 1/2009
President’s address
I wrote last year’s spring Address to the accompaniment of a Force 8. This year we are currently enjoying one of
the loveliest springs in the West Country. What I do hope for is good sailing weather for all our regattas. Last year
England produced disappointing racing condition with winds frequently reaching Force 6. Luckily the Europeans
at La Trinite took place in perfect sailing conditions.
Beat Furrer’s first ISMA News of the year is always the Spring’s highlight, while this year’s events will of course
reach their climax with the Worlds at Newport, Rhode Island in September.
Although things on the Six-Metre front may appear to have been quieter this winter, as usual much work has been
going on behind the scenes. In particular, Tim Russell, our Honorary Treasurer, has been spending considerable
time researching the ISAF archives, to study the history of the various changes in the international rule. His aim
has been to explore which rules should have been “grandfathered” and he has now produced a paper with proposed
amendments to the Class Rules. These proposals take account of previous changes and are intended to ensure
that Classic Sixes do not inadvertently fall out of class. His proposals have been considered by our Class Rules
Committee and will be tabled for ratification at this year’s AGM.
We have already received Basil Carmody’s new and magnificent 121 page Classic Newsletter, even better than
ever and truly a labour of love.
In September, for the first time since
Oyster Bay in 1987 and for the first
time ever in Newport, we have the
World Championships in the US. A
fleet of Sixes has been building up in
Newport, under the enthusiastic drive
of Toby Rodes and Bill Doyle, both
of whom are also very much behind
the organization for the Worlds. With
perhaps around 12 to 16 boats attending
from Europe, together with as
many as sixteen from North America,
this would appear to be becoming the
largest World Championships to be
held in the United States. I must both
thank and commend Hans Oen, Henrik
Andersin,Thomas Lundqvist and Rees
Martin, for all their effort in reducing
costs to both encourage and enable European
boats to attend.
I wish you all a wonderful year’s sailing
and look forward to meeting many
of you at Newport..
Tim Street.
Membership Subscriptions
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
May I remind you all that subscriptions for 2009 are now due. In future we intend that we will only send copies of
the ISMA News to those who have paid a subscription. There are two categories of membership:
a. Full membership is for the owners of boats currently in racing commission. The subscription rate is
€80.
b. Associate membership is for those who are not listed as boat owners, but wish to keep in touch with the
affairs of the class. It is also the appropriate rate for owners of boats not currently in racing commission.
The subscription rate is €30.
Owners of two or more boats are to pay subscriptions for each boat at whatever rate is appropriate, except that if
one or more of their boats are in commission then no fee need be paid for boats not in commission.
Joint owners are to arrange that one owner pays the fee appropriate to the boat, and the remainder pay at the associate
rate, the total cost to be divided among them at their discretion.
Fees should be paid to ISMA by 1 May each year (ISMA By-law D2). Class Treasurers are asked to make payment
where possible direct to ISMA’s Euro account,
as follows:
HSBC Bank plc - Chichester Branch
94 East Street
Chichester
West Sussex
If Treasurers prefer to make a payment into ISMA’s UK Sterling account, they should contact the ISMA Treasurer
first to agree an appropriate exchange rate, and I will then advise them of the appropriate bank account details.
Treasurers or Secretaries should also forward a list of the subscriptions they have paid, giving the members names
and the postal addresses to which the ISMA Bulletin should be sent. For full members they should also give the
sail number and the name of the boat. This can be sent by post to the ISMA Treasurer, Tim Russell, at:
Auburn Cottage
Have you got your Sail Labels?
Please remember that all sails measured after 1 March 2005 must carry the official certification mark near the tack.
Sail Certification Marks can be ordered from the Treasurer by mail or e-mail. On receipt of your order I will reply
with an invoice and ask you to make payment direct to the ISMA account. The cost is €100 for each mark. To
reduce bank charges, sailmakers are asked to order several marks at a time, rather than buying them individually.
As soon as receipt of your payment is confirmed I will despatch the marks by post – there is no charge for postage.
Please make sure you order sail marks in good time, since if I am away there will be no-one to process your order.
I would also suggest it is not wise to plan on buying your sail labels after you arrive in Newport. This is a bad idea
for a number of reasons:
• If I am not in Newport then there may be no-one there to sell you a label.
• Although the sail labels have an adhesive backing and can be stuck to the sail, for security it is better if
they are sewn on as well, particularly on spinnakers.
• The label should be in place when the sail is first measured, and this first measurement should really happen
before you arrive at Newport. It is better if your sailmaker buys the labels and sews them on before the sails
are delivered.
Year End Accounts for 2008
These accounts represent the total of both ISMA’s bank accounts, with the sterling account converted into Euro at
a rate of £1 = €1.05, which was the exchange rate at the end of the year. In the past year I have managed to reduce
considerably the losses from currency exchange and bank transfers, mainly by being more realistic in setting
rates for payments made in currencies other than the euro. However, you may have noticed that the relationship
between sterling and the euro has been rather exciting, with a particularly low rate (from sterling's point of view) at
the end of the year. In this year's accounts I have identified the effects of this change as an exchange rate correction
from the previous year, and you will see that it is quite a substantial sum. In fact the position is not really as bad
as that, since it reflects a relatively large sterling balance at the start of the year, which we were able to use before
the value of sterling started to fall.
Findings:
We, the Ringvold family have considered the issue based on comprehensive
email exchanges copied to us.
In the spirit of Mr. August Ringvold, who himself was an immensely
competitive yachting helmsman in his days, we believe that he
wholeheartedly would have embraced the idea that “older” boats,
in this case boats of the 2nd International Rating Rule generation,
not be left behind and rendered uncompetitive in relation to new
constructions to the 3rd Rule of 1933. The idea of therefore allowing
the older boats to avail themselves of controlled and legal improvement
factors as created by the ( 3rd) Rule, we find to not only
to be reasonable but imperative for the continuance of a cohesive
6mR Class and to diminish the detrimental impact that the introduction
of such a new Rule otherwise could have had.
Directions To Newport
How to get to Newport, RI
Newport, Rhode Island is centrally located in southern New England and is roughly two hours from points north
like Boston’s Logan Airport or about three hours from New York City’s airports by car. Trains, buses and flights
to Providence's T.F. Green Airport are also available to shorten your travel time to and from Newport. T.F. Green
Airport lies 25 miles to the north and the train station is located 20 miles west in Kingston, RI at the University of
ISMA News International 6mJI Association Bulletin 1/2009
Rhode Island main campus. Smaller private/charter planes have access to Newport State Airport located just a few
miles outside the city. Therefore, there are many travel options. For participants traveling from Europe, flying into
Boston, Logan Airport and either renting a car or taking the bus from the airport directly to Newport is probably
easiest and least expensive.
(www.visitingdc.com/airports/logan-airport-address.asp ) (www.peterpanbus.com)
For the return trip to the airport, there is a bus terminal at the Gateway Visitor's Center (www.gonewport.com/
ViewContentPage.aspx?id=464) located in downtown Newport with direct service to New York City and Boston.
Once you arrive in town, there are several places to rent cars, bikes and mopeds on the island.
Other than sailing, what is the
atmosphere of Newport, RI?
Newport was founded in 1639 and has always
had an economy deeply tied to maritime traditions.
The town has been well preserved and as
a result, boasts one of the highest concentrations
of colonial homes in the nation, in the downtown
Newport Historic District, one of three National
Historic Landmark Districts in the city. Many of
these homes were restored in the late 20th century
through grants made by Newport resident Doris
Duke, as well as other local efforts such as Operation
Clapboard. As a result, Newport‘s colonial
heritage is well-preserved and documented at the Newport Historical Society. In addition to the colonial
architecture, the city is known for its Gilded Age mansions, which have also received extensive restoration
from both private owners and non-profits such as the Preservation Society of Newport County.
Another National Historic Landmark District, Bellevue Avenue, is the home of the International Tennis
Hall of Fame, where important tennis players are commemorated, as well as a number of mansions
dating back to the Gilded Age, including The Breakers, Belcourt Castle, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms,
Marble House, Rosecliff, Rough Point, and the William Watts Sherman House. Some of these are open
for guided tours. The nearby Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum has a fine collection of trees
and plants, including the largest sequoia on the East Coast.
truck or a trailer for the shipment.
This sponsorship agreement has been reached through the initiative of Mr. Thomas Lundqvist, Sweden, who has
agreed to be the coordinator between the shipping line and the 6-Metre Class. It is agreed to provide WWL a preliminary
status of the prospected shipments within end March2008. A reference number to be used when booking
will then be provided.
Dear All,
I would like inform you, that the sponsored shipment agreement is now formally confirmed with Wallenius Wilhelmsen
trucks, thus, all vehicles will be shipped inside the ship covered from weather and sea..
with destination Newark N.J.
The price of USD $5000 is offered for round trip per boat (also if shipped 2 boats on one vehicle), including mast
an opportunity to ship boats at an additional charge from Kotka, Finland..
To reduce the administrative work for all, I have accepted to be the coordinator between the class and the WWL
and each country shall appoint a shipping coordinator to be in contact me. The boats, registered on the list, will
receive a reference number to be used in contact with WWL, when the shipment is due to take place. The boat
owner will handle the administrative details, payments, etc directly with the appointed contact person at WWL.
To be able to estimate the number of boats from each port, we are asked to produce a preliminary list of boats to
be shipped with the following details:

THE COUPE DE L’ENTENTE CORDIALE:
a short history
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
6mJI activites in France Mandragore and Flapper
The first edition of the Coupe de
l’Entente Cordiale was held at Bénodet
in 1992.
Its origins go back a general wish on
the part of owners of British Sixes to be
able to race under the sunnier skies of
France. Tim Street then took the formal
step of asking the UF6mJI if it might be
possible organise a regatta in France in
which British and French boats could
race together.
Next, François Carn, then president of
the Yacht Club de France, took the initiative of proposing a regatta with Y.C.F. sponsorship, to be organised by
the Yacht Club de l’Odet on the occasion of this latter’s centennial. The regatta eventually did double duty as the
French National Championship. It was then decided to have it do triple duty by also being the British National
Championship. With that began the tradition of the French championship’s adding the word “Open” to its title,
thus opening the possibility for boats of other countries to compete.
In 1992, 16 boats participated, including 11 Moderns. Pierre-Paul Heckly won the Classics with F 44 Astrée and
Peter Bateman, at the helm of W. Whitehouse-Vaux’s HK 2 Thisbe, won the Moderns.
Several days earlier, the same boats had competed for the prestigious Coupe de France of the Y.C.F. This marked
the centennial of Six Metre competition for this trophy. Peter Bateman also won this competition in a closely
contested contest against Robert Leigh-Wood and Peter Canning on K 90 Lion.
In addition to the six British boats at Bénodet, there were also three Swiss ones: Bernard Haissly’s Z 77 Fléau,
Edmond de Rothschild’s Z 78 Gitana (which along with F 107 Tsigane represented three Moderns present which
had all been commissioned by the Rothschild family) and Michel Clerc’s Z 72 Jeu du Vent.
Three special prizes were awarded at the end of the regatta:
- a “Sportsmanship and Perseverance” prize awarded to Tim Street on K 98 Ewie (now B 11 Alexandra) for
having raced with a boat whose advanced age was barely compensated by the youth of her crew,
- the “Luckiest Boat” award to André Chaudoye’s F 105 May Be VIII whose participation was limited to a
single race after his boat hit a rock on the way back to the harbour entrance,
- the “Elegance” prize awarded to Philippe Durr at the helm of Z 78 Gitana for his crew’s sense of fair play,
on the water as well as on shore.
The following edition was held at Cowes in 1995 with eleven boats participating, but with only Guy and Philippe
Burban’s K 70 Pieric IV (now Z 113 Temptation II) representing France.
In 2005, after a lapse of ten years, thirteen Sixes met again at Bénodet for the trophy’s 3rd edition. Jean-Denis
Sarraquigne’s F 116 Bravade VI beat out Stefan O’Reilly-Hyland’s F 107 Tsigane in the Moderns, while Brian
Pope beat out seven other Classics at the helm of K 48 Caprice which had recently undergone a magnificent and
transformational restoration.
The 4th edition will be held at La Trinité-sur-Mer on 11th to 15th June. To simplify the logistics and thus also the
costs, it will again be paired with the French National Open Championship on 26th to 28th June. Twenty or so
Sixes are expected to participate, including boats from Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K. … for heated contests on
the water, followed by gatherings on shore with the convivial spirit which has become the hallmark of our Class.
PRESS RELEASE
Cowes Classics Week
Issued: 30 th April 2009
For immediate release
Metre & Classic Keelboat Regatta – Meeting of Class Representatives
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
Last Friday, the organising team for the Regatta from the Royal London Yacht Club met with
Class Captains and representatives of classes attending the regatta in order that the event can
meet the needs of competitors. It is in the Corinthian spirit that the event is evolving in a way
that is totally participative and the level of enthusiasm and support is most gratifying.
Classes involved in the event so far include: Daring (for which the event is now a qualifying event
for their annual series), Victory (who are celebrating their 75 th Anniversary), 6mR, 8mR,
Sunbeam, Bembridge Redwing, Bembridge One Design, X One Design and Tofinou 9.5 (in the
spirit of tradition – a new class that sail in the Mediterranean classic events and have adopted this
as their first major UK event). In addition, a handicap class is expected to include 22sq.m.,
Tumlare, IOD, West Solent Restricted Class (who are celebrating their 85 th Anniversary), 30sq.m.
– all racing classes that exist in limited numbers. It is now looking like there may be over 100
boats attending.
It was agreed that the formula of using multiple race tracks with committee boat starts provides
clear water for each race in a relatively quiet Solent and by rotating
the fleets between laid and fixed mark courses provides the variety
that is part of a regatta ethos. One afternoon will be laid aside for
a whole fleet race which provides an optional lay half-day for
those that need it or a reserve day if necessary. The Notice of
Race has now been posted on the web site and an on-line entry
system will shortly be in place.
Looking to the future, it is anticipated that Cowes Classics Week
will attract individual participants from classic one-design fleets all
round the country and that it will provide a home for celebratory
events as these classes reach key milestones in their life.
Celebrations due in the next couple of years include: 100 th of the X
One Design, 75 th of the Mylne One Design (based on the Mersey),
75 th of the Loch Long (Aldeburgh & Clyde), 75 th of the Sq.m.
(German Rule) – the boats that became the Windfall Yachts and
the 50 th Anniversary of the first Cowes-Torquay Offshore
Powerboat Race. The Royal London YC have offered their Royal
Victoria Cup as an Anniversary Cup to be awarded to any fleet
celebrating an anniversary in that year.
-- ENDS -- The
Bartlett
Cup – recently discovered in a
London attic and awarded to the Metre classes
Enclosed some nice pictures of Hakahala. Finally after 4 long winters and one summer hard work, we launch her
last weekend, just for a test! In the spring of 2009 we will do it ones again and officially.
We are sailing here with a loaned rig from the Caramba owned by Frederik Heerlien. New wooden mast is ordered.
The first trips we made Saturday with light winds, and I'm very enthusiasm about her performances. With the old
sails we easy reach 25-30 degrees against the wind, Very much promising for the future!
We are proud to announce the publication of the latest issue of the Classic Six Metre Newsletter.
You can download it by clicking on the following link:
http://www.classic6mr.info/Classic_Six_Metre_Newsletter_no_14_2009.pdf
This issue reflects both the vitality of the class and the passionate relationship which exists between each owner
and his boat. It represents an impressive collaborative effort:
- articles about 44 boats, some of which originated in French, German and Swedish,
- 53 different authors from 12 different countries,
- 121 pages
With each year's issue, the letter further establishes its role as a repository of the histories of individual classic
Sixes
For those of you who have ever tried to read the Six Metre Rule and given up after a page or two, you'll find a "do
it yourself" version of the Rule which explains each of the calculations.
As with any lengthy Web publication, the easiest way to read it is to print it out. It should cost you less than 4 €
in paper and ink to do so.
We hope that you find something of interest.
Information of general interest
Checking of flotation
Measurement anomalies that we have encountered in the last few years have prompted the possibility of a different
approach to the checking of flotation at important Regattas.
The device shown here is no substitute for the ( previously published in ISMA News) flotation sticks at bow and
stern + theodolite, in terms of accuracy, for placing the measurement marks, but should provide a good guide as
to how a boat is sitting in the water. Thus any serious deviations from the Certificate trim should be immediately
apparent.
Knowing the LOA and the Bow and Stern L1 overhang deductions from the Rating Certificate any owner can
check the LBG of his boat in a very simple way. That it is readily adapted to fresh water is a great bonus.
Bill Green has generously constructed a prototype device which will be tested shortly in the Solent area.
Transport of a 6mJI in a 40’ container
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
Henrik Andersin shares his experience with all of us.
Here is a plan of a dolly for the Djinn which fits inside a 40 foot container. The Djinn was transported in it from
Argentina to Finland in it in 2003. It is not a general "one-size fits all" plan, but I want to share it with the Six
Metre community.
I recived the plan from the yachts previous owner, Segismundo Cortes in Argentina.
YACHT RACING DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM ADDED TO
WORLD YACHT RACING FORUM
March 30, 2009 - Informa Yacht Group, organisers of the World Yacht Racing Forum have announced the addition
of the Yacht Racing Design & Technology Symposium to run parallel to this year’s Forum, 9-10 December at the
Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. Over 300 delegates and 65 media attended the inaugural World Yacht Racing Forum
last December, co-located with the 4th edition of the popular Motorsport Business Forum.
The two day symposium will bring together the world’s leading yacht racing designers, naval architects and technology
experts to meet and discuss some of the latest developments and issues in yacht racing design and technology.
The schedule will include topics such as composite technology, canting keel and rudder technology, hydrodynamics,
rig technology, advances in coating techniques and sail design. The symposium will also address the
environmental implications on today’s yacht racing designers and builders. The full schedule will be announced
in due course.
As well as industry experts and Production Directors from yacht builders, the symposium is also open for racing
yacht owners to participate and meet and network with design professionals to discuss their own yachts or projects.
The symposium will share joint access with the World Yacht Racing Forum lounge and exhibition area, as Event
Director James Pleasance explains;
“The commercial and design/technical world of yacht racing are intrinsically linked as many of today’s biggest
yachting events are driven by the design and technology of the yachts competing in them; the America’s Cup, Volvo
Ocean Race, Vendee Globe, Farr 40 class, Swan 45 regattas, and so on. Joining these two conferences together
is the ideal opportunity for both sides of the sport to share ideas and forge new relationships. ”
Participants from both conferences will also gain free access to the Motorsport Business Forum and the Track &
Ocean cocktail reception where they will have the opportunity to meet fellow business and design professionals
from the world of motorsport. Top yacht designer Juan Kouyoumdjian attended the inaugural Forum last year;
“It is a great idea to add a symposium for the professionals involved in yacht design technology. It will allow us to
meet in a pleasant environment, and to share our views on the future. It will also be interesting for teams, or yacht
owners, to meet us and compare our ideas and discuss new trends and innovations.”
Closing words
What should we add to this ISMA news?
The 6mJI are an international Class and the news are spread all over the world. I am convinced that the readers in
Italy are interested what does happen in Sweden and the German owners would know what’s going on in France.
Please do think at the next issue and prepare a small report covering the local events. All inputs from the 6mJI
National Authorities would get the ISMA news even more exciting – as the coming sailing season will be.
