ISMA News International 6mJI Association Bulletin 2/2010
Editorial
Dear All
It was your choice to elect your news editor also as your president. Thank you for your confidence. This is also the
reason why you will not find the Presidents message in the next ISMA news issues.
We had an extremely active sailing season in Europe, but also in the USA. Some local regattas, the Queen Christina
Nations Cup, national championships and finally the European Championship 2010 after more than 25 years in
Switzerland again. The Regattaverein Brunnen and the Swiss 6mJI Association were very proud to welcome 27
yachts from 6 nations in the center of Switzerland. Sunshine, thermic wind in a range of 2 to 4 Beaufort allowed
to have nice and competitive sailing. The generosity of the Fallenbach Yard to offer us their yard-workshop for the
friendly get-together has allowed us to have a perfect event.
The organisation of the Europeans and the closure of the event did absorbe a lot of my time. One thing what I learnt
is, that inviting to an International Regatta means a lot of work. I thank all the organisation team for the support it
brought in and I respect all organisation committee that had and will invite for events in the future.
It’s only with this ISMA issue that I start to reflect about my presidential objectives. It seems simple to me. We
have more than hundred 6mJI that are in good racing condition. We have a lot of local fleets. We should try to race
our yachts – they are made for - there. We have to plan the international regattas in places where we will find wind
and the accommodation cost is reasonable. The challenge we live with is the transport of our yachts. Should we
create a vehicle pool. I remember very intelligent Dutch semi-trailors our friends used to come to Flensburg some
years ago. A Swiss owner does use this transport unit, too. Should we try to find a sponsor who leases us these
vehicles at a reasonable price? I will try to get informations.
Now I hope, that these ISMA news will please you again. Thank you to all fleets or individuals who sent us reports
of their local events.
10. Categorisation of ISMA Events as open events
The President stated that there were no plans for ISMA to categorize either events or sailors.
10a. Battens in Jibs
The change that allows battens in non overlapping sails was approved according to the proposal with one wording
change: the requirement for battens to be approximately at right angles to the leach was deleted, to allow battens
to be aligned to suit jibs used on furlers. The agreed text therefore reads:
“Foresails with a foot dimension not greater than 110% of ‘J’ shall be permitted to have not more than three battens.
The maximum length of each batten pocket shall be 800mm and the maximum width 50mm. Battens shall
be positioned at equal intervals along the leech (+/- 50mm). The leech of such sails shall not extend beyond the
straight line joining the after head point to the clew, and the distance between the head point and the after head
point shall not exceed 100mm.”
11. ISAF fee on new Sixes built
This item was removed from the agenda
12. ISMA Membership Proposal for Reduced Fees
The proposal and its merits were discussed. The ISMA Committee was opposed and Hon. Treasurer Tim Russell
presented his paper which also opposed this proposal. Tim Russell considered that the proposal was ill-advised at
this stage and would lead to ISMA’s insolvency.

ISMA News International 6mJI Association Bulletin 2/2010
After careful consideration the countries voted unanimously to not approve the proposal.
13. Proposal for the Unloved Boats 1965-71
The Chairman presented the Committee’s proposal to accept the following 1969-72 wooden semi-moderns as
Classics in the class.
The proposal had the support of both the Classics Committee and the Technical Committee.
The boats considered were:
KA-6 Toogooloowoo IV FRA-69 Astree II (ex G 53 Michel IV)
G-49 Tchetsche/Courage III FIN-55 Toogooloowoo V (ex KA 7)
H-20 Goodwood (ex G 47 Kobbold XVIII) GER-86 Gosling (ex K 80)
Z-48 Antares
The meeting approved unanimously the proposal with the following restrictions:
- The decision is for a trial period ending at the AGM 2016
- The decision is subject to confirmation in 2016
- The decision can be revoked earlier if the ISMA Committee so decides.
- These boats may only be classics if no change is made to their underwater body or moving appendices
- These boats may win the Classic division in the European Cup or in the World Cup
- These boats may not win the Djinn Trophy, which was specifically presented for pre-1965 boats.
14. Sail limitations Proposal
The meeting voted to unanimously not to approve of this proposal
15. Race Management Proposal
The meeting considered the proposal by Thomas Lundqvist to appoint a Worlds and Europeans Regatta Coordinator
and decided to approve a Race Officer position on the Committee.
It was agreed that Paul Smith of GBR would be appointed to this position as he had been elected to the Committee
without portfolio.
16. Jean-Pierre Odero Trophy
The President presented this Trophy to Guy-Roland Perrin, the Class Measurer, in his absence.
Former ISMA President, Bernard Haissly, outlined the history of The Jean-Pierre Odero Trophy’s, which he had
presented to ISMA in memory of Jean-Pierre Odero, who had done so much to re-invigorate the class in the Mediterranean.
17. Any Other Business
The Secretary informed that the new Pennants were for sale at 20€ or 30CHF
18. Valete
Tim Street bid his farewell to the Class Organization, thanking in particular Beat Furrer for producing the ISMA
Bulletin and organizing such a fantastic regatta; Ian Howlett, for 25 years Chairman of the Technical Committee,
for all his help and advice; Hans Oen for all his behind-the-scenes advice and encouragement; Tim Russell for all
his work as Hon. Treasurer in first of all preparing accounts and then, for the first time since about 1973, stabilizing
the budget; and finally Henrik Andersin for all his work as Hon. Secretary and for his underwriting the ‘Six-Metre
Membership Subscriptions
It may seem rather early to remind you about subscriptions for next year, but by the time the next issue of this
Journal is published the due date will be very close. I think it is important to remind everyone that there are two
categories of membership, and make it quite clear the difference between them. It has been disappointing to see
members pay the lower rate, and then see the name of their boat appearing in race results.
a. Full membership is for the owners of boats currently in racing commission. This means all boats wherever they
race – it is not just for those boats that compete internationally. The subscription rate is €80.
b. Associate membership is for those who are not listed as boat owners, but wish to keep in touch with the affairs
of the class. It is also the appropriate rate for owners of boats which are laid up and not actively racing. The subscription
rate is €30.
Owners of two or more boats are to pay subscriptions for each boat at whatever rate is appropriate, except that if
one or more of their boats are in commission then no fee need be paid for boats not in commission.
Joint owners are to arrange that one owner pays the fee appropriate to the boat, and the remainder pay at the associate
rate, the total cost to be divided among them at their discretion.
Fees should be paid to ISMA by 1 May each year (ISMA By-law D2). Class Treasurers are asked to make payment
where possible direct to ISMA’s Euro account, as follows:
If Treasurers prefer to make a payment into ISMA’s UK Sterling account, they should contact the ISMA Treasurer
first to agree an appropriate exchange rate, and I will then advise them of the appropriate bank account details.
Treasurers or Secretaries should also forward a list of the subscriptions they have paid, giving the members names
and the postal addresses to which the ISMA Bulletin should be sent. For full members they should also give the
sail number and the name of the boat.

Have you got your Sail Labels?
Please remember that all sails measured after 1 March 2005 must carry the official certification mark near the tack.
Sail Certification Marks can be ordered from the Treasurer by mail or e-mail. On receipt of your order I will reply
with an invoice and ask you to make payment direct to the ISMA account. The cost is €100 for each mark. To
reduce bank charges, sailmakers are asked to order several marks at a time, rather than buying them individually.
As soon as receipt of your payment is confirmed I will despatch the marks by post – there is no charge for postage.
Please make sure you order sail marks in good time, since if I am away there will be no-one to process your order.
Accounts for 2010
I have prepared the accounts for this year up to 31 August, with a prediction for the end of the year. These accounts
represent the total of both ISMA’s bank accounts, with the sterling account converted into Euro at a rate of
£1 = Euro 1.21. The changing exchange rate continues to make accounting rather interesting, and I have tried to
separate and identify the effects of exchange rate fluctuations.
When I prepared the accounts for last year I adjusted the figures to include a late transfer of funds from the USA,
which related to receipts and expenses from the World championships in Newport, even though that money did not
reach our accounts until after the end of the year. In preparing this year’s accounts I have made a similar adjustment,
to treat those receipts as if they were received last year.
You will notice that there is very little difference between the situation now and the prediction for the year end. I
do not expect any further receipts. As a result our financial situation is disappointing. We will make a loss this
year. Our receipts do not cover our expenses even though I have paid only half the estimated costs for producing
the ISMA Journal and maintaining the website. We rely on the generosity of Beat Furrer in not asking for the full
payment, although I could of course make payment from the reserves in our bank balances.
The accounts are shown page 10:
Voting Rights
Voting rights in 2011 will be dependent on the fees paid in the previous year (ISMA By-law 5D4). This year we
have collected fees for 85 boats, as follows:
Fleet Votes
Finland 7
France 8
Germany 4
Great Britain 19
(14) VENUE GOOD & BAD POINTS?
While the conditions are quite satisfactory for an America’s Cup event, for smaller classes such as
the Six-Metres, not all races can take place outside the harbour off Brenton Reef due to adverse
weather conditions. The first weekend race was held in a light easterly, giving a lee shore. Due to
fog, some races had to be postponed.
In the event of bad weather, contingency plans had been made to move into Naragansett Bay well
above the Jamestown Bridge. This area proved satisfactory providing an sizeable sailing ground,
despite a strong outgoing tide throughout, leading to there being benefit in going right, not always
noticed by the competitors. The strong North Easterly wind and heavy rain were not anticipated,
but in the circumstances, the area proved adequate, despite having to move one morning due to US
Navy torpedo trials.
(a) ASHORE:
The Organisation was set up at the Museum of Yachting and adjacent harbour/marina next door to
Fort Adams. Due to lack of a suitable building, a large tented area was set up, which provided an
adequate base. The actual administration was quite excellent as one would expect. However, the
little marina was really too small for the number of competitors; some of the local ones therefore
remaining at the Newport Shipyard in Newport town, some two miles away by road. To be fair this
was the biggest fleet of Six-Metres ever assembled in North America.
Arrival, launching and recovery was well organised and ran smoothly. The main problem was the
inadequacy of the reception arrangements at Newark, the US port of arrival for non-US competitors,
resulting in some boats being re-routed to North Carolina, not very near to Newport.
The competence of the haulier’s drivers was also somewhat disappointing, both mast on one of the
German boats being broken while entering the gates of the Newport Shipyard for launching.
Arrangements for the checking of certificates and sail measurement operated well.
(b) AFLOAT:
As noted, the marina harbour was too small, but there were adequate boats available to tow competitors
in and out of the Bay in light weather. Committee boats were fine.
Please state any recommendations for future World Championship events
a) at the same venue
Although Newport was once the base for the America’s Cup teams and is still highly organised for
the 12 Metres, unless the NYYC takes a lead role, there are no regular existing facilities or suitable
club houses for such an event. Having said that, for a first time ever there were no more than the
usual quantity of complaints and the friendliness of all those involved in the administration made
up for much.
b) generally in terms class logistic of running a worlds? (not venue specific points).
There are now so many major “International” Championships around the World, that it is necessary
to start negotiations with appropriate clubs with suitable sailing waters some years ahead.
For organising and arranging these World or European Championships, planning must therefore
begin at least three years ahead (in this case, 2006 for 2009) with acceptance of the appropriate
national venue and then receiving an invitation from the organising national association and yacht
club.
The rainbow falls in the Lake
Uri©Gilles Favez
A report from Brian Pope, who lived the National Champiopnship and the Europeans 2010:
I thought it worth while penning a few notes to those who were not there ; BOY did you miss a Ball , Some 30
boats in contention for the Opens and the 2010 Europeans ;
Apart from blowing up the Turbo , filling a Swiss Tunnel completely with smoke , Having a Swiss Police escort
to Ebikon , and asking Beat Furer to get Titia to Brunnen , fighting with the Swiss Border control (another story )
we all got there in time ;
Once @ Brunnen we were just blown away with the Area just completely stunning form every angle ;
The Marina was completely handed over to us , Lifts were on time , we had a mast crane @ our disposal , the Marina
shed was decked out in Huge Six M Pictures from La Trinit'e taken last year ;
All Crew packs were very complete , entries made easily , towing in & out was just Swiss clockwork ;
The Sailing area was in Lake Uri , very high sided with snow capped tops , interesting wind patterns , for me a
first on a Lake .
Not quite up to speed for the Opens as there were only two of us , Beat bless him found two other Guys. Ueli who
was in charge of Media & Rudi a retired Boat Builder who knew a thing or two about Lakes & I'm pleased to say
Six's .
After a battle Royal we made third with four up & you should of heard Postle up front !! As for me I got left with
Helm , Main & Runners (The tiller now fits my Bottom quite well !!)
Winds were 12 / 22 knots , Water flat just perfect , around 10 moderns and 18 Classics took part .
Sponsors were very good , Slam being the Main one .
Back @ the Six Base all crews got 2 Pints of Beer free every time we came ashore very welcome in 28 degrees .
The trip to Lucerne by Night in a Swiss Paddle Steamer was magic , the new Culture centre just lighting up as we
arrived , all Carbon Fibre with couloured laser lights running through it , stunning Meal on board with unlimited
Wine just seemed to flow .
One has to offer a huge thanks to Beat Furer & his Team for a very well organised event ,
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
ON THE POLITICAL FRONT ;
Apparently the AGM was the longest on record
An item raised re ISMA membership showed only three Fins were paid up , Hendricks Andersen who designed the
new 6M Pennant stated that these could only be purchased by ISMA paid up members so I said that Finland would
not be buying many !! He said this would be seriously addressed by next year ! we will see ;
Sail Limitation was quashed , we suggested a reread of the Metre Rule be undertaken by the Proposer (not present
@ the time )
Battens for Blade no 3's were to be accepted
Resignations , Tim Street stood down as President & Beat Furer has been elected unopposed .Many other smaller
issues were raised all of which will come out in the minutes ;
The Dutch had originally asked for a Europeans in 2012 or 2013 , their proposal was not supported either by presence
or ballot , it was therefore dismissed .
I proposed that this should be taken up as an available date & have therefore proposed that Falmouth will host the
Europeans , no objections were made, very positive yes's were heard all round, yet to be ratified, if anyone has
thoughts on this please call me .
Arrangements are being made for Falmouth to host A Spring Open Championship in May 2011 .
Boats that will attend pre La Trinit'e so far ;
That's about it for now from the West Country , WE HAD A SUPERB TIME , DO NOT MISS OUT NEXT YEAR
!!
SCHWEIZER UND SCHWEDEN SEGELTEN AM
SCHNELLSTEN
Brunnen, 27. Juli 2010.- Das Schweizer Boot „Mecara“
(SUI 45) bei den Classics und die schwedische
Yacht „Sophie II“ (SWE 132) bei den Modern heissen
die Siegerboote der Europameisterschaft der 6m JI-
Yachten, die vom 24. bis 27. Juli auf dem Vierwaldstättersee
vor Brunnen stattfand. Im Vorfeld fand ebenfalls
auf dem Urnersee die Internationale Schweizer Klassenmeisterschaft
statt.??Der Regattaverein Brunnen

Happy Hour©Gilles Favez
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
VEGA, le Z2, construit en 1929 pour Me. Edouard Folliet à Genéve, ex- Tithéa, ex-Ylliam a depuis ce
jour un nouveau propriétaire, notre ami Pierre-Alain Raynal.
MM.
2010 North American Six Meter Championships
August 13 - 15, 2010
Port Townsend, WA.
The 2010 North Americans took place over the weekend of August 14 -15 in Port Townsend, WA. To say the conditions
were excellent would be an understatement, with consistent 8 - 10 knots for the 7 races under clear blue
skies and warm temperatures. The event opened on Friday evening with a reception at the Port Townsend Foundry
courtesy of Pete Langley. On Saturday the Olympic Mountains to the west were clear as were the Cascade Mountains
to the east. The races were 5 - 9 miles long on the western end of Quimper Bay with shifts of 5 - 10 degrees
making things interesting for the competitors. Tidal currents were present, though not extreme. In the Moderns it
was Andy Parker and Finnegan leading after the first 4 races, with Rainer Muller's Saskia II (Olympic medalist
Ross MacDonald driving) carrying a 1 point lead over Nick Booth's Flapper. The 2009 World Cup winners, KC
10 Gallant, had a tough start to the regatta with an over early in the second race and then hitting the mark while in
the lead in the 3rd.
On Saturday evening the excellent meal, beautiful view, and warm comraderie at the Wooden Boat Foundation
was tempered by the news that Karen Davis, wife of May Be VII owner Joth Davis, had passed away earlier in
the day. The gathering held several minutes of silence in her remembrance and all express the deepest sympathy
to the Davis family.
Sunday's dire weather prediction (light and variable) was inaccurate to everyone's relief and the same consistent
breeze from the west allowed the Race Committee to efficiently run 3 more races, 2 of which were twice around
the course - approximately 9 miles. Bob Cadranell's Arunga put in a dominating performance, with 3 wins on the
last day to win it all. Andy Parker in Finnegan was in hot pursuit and a threat for the overall until an error in judgement
at the bottom mark forced a 720 degree turn, and he was then out of contention. It was a seesaw battle in the
Classics with leads changing between races and legs, but Rainer Muller's Saskia II ended the day with a 4, enough
for a 1 point cushion to take the Classic title, which is symbolized by the Olin J. Stephens II trophy. If you happen
to know where the OJS II trophy is located, please contact the Matt Cockburn, matt6mr56@comcast.net. The
Arunga crew won the Gooderham North American Championship trophy, as well as the US Nationals Trophy. The
first 3 places in each division took home an etched tumbler, with the overall winners receiving a lovely 6 metre
half-hull mounted on a mahogany plank, all courtesy of Molly & Bob Cadranell.

Hi All,
It’s been a little while since I’ve seen a big project like this get started, and I’m heartened to see a beautiful 6 meter
being restored.
This boat is a 1925 Johan Anker design which has recently been pulled into the shed for some serious work over
the winter. The new owner is the grandson of a previous owner who sailed the boat in the 30’s from Escanaba,
on an arm of Lake Michigan north of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Josh Swan is a graduate of the International Yacht
Restoration School, and it’s awesome to see him applying his craft. His shop is located in Ashland, Wisconsin.
As you can see from the photos below, some serious work has begun, and I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a tow truck
skidding a sled with a 6 meter on top of it straight into the shop. Who needs a Travelift anyway!
Best regards,
One of the first Moderns 6 gets back in shape
USA 126 Hooroo (Australian aborigine for “see you later”), Ex KA 8 Pacemaker.
This boat is the 3rd design by S&S for John Taylor of Australia, behind Toogooloowoo IV and Toogie V. She was
built in Sydney by Halvorsen to represent the Royal Price Alfred Yacht Club in the 3rd running of the American
Australian Cup match race series against the St Francis Yacht Club entry US 100 St Francis V. Pacemaker,
helmed by 1972 Olympic Gold medalist David Forbes, was unsuccessful against Tom Blackaller on San Francisco
Bay. Later that same summer Pacemaker again took 2nd place to Blackaller in US 100 St Francis V at the first
World Cup with a score of 4, 2, 1, 1, 2.
Hooroo has undergone significant work this past summer(hence no sailing). After tearing chunks of deck away on
a couple of occasions last year we set out this past spring to repair the deck. Unfortunately, the deck was a complete
disaster and needed to be replaced. We pulled (skil sawed) the deck off in an afternoon and discovered that
the deck beams, backing blocks and mast partners were generally too tired to keep…so replacement of all parts
started this last April.
I contacted Sparkman & Stephens to get a copy of the original deck lay-out, but none was drawn. The deck layout
was left up to the owner and the builder to figure out. Having nothing concrete to go on as a deck plan I was able
to come up with pictures of the two immediate predecessors Toogooloowoo IV and Toogooloowoo V to get some
idea of the deck layout that may have been used. We then measured Pacemaker(Hooroo) stem to stern and put
the measurements into a CAD program to lay-out the new deck and to make it class legal. In addition to the new
deck, deck beams and mast partners we also have replaced the mast step and as well repaired or replaced several of
the laminated hull frames. Work is nearing completion and Hooroo and will launch next spring with no structural
issues. The work was undertaken in my shop at home here in Port Townsend and we will be finished with the details
and final paintwork this winter. Enjoy the photos! Hopefully the photos will give an idea of what was done.
2010 Queen Christina Nations Cup: Race Report
from Port Madison
The 2010 Queen Christina Nations Cup was held this year on Bainbridge Island, Washington, in the United States.
Boats were generously supplied by members of the Puget Sound 6 Meter Association, as well as two boats from
the Team 6mR Vancouver fleet.
Hosted my Kimo (James) and Sheri MacKey, and the Port Madison Yacht Club, attendees included 5 international
teams officially competing for the QCNC trophy; Finland, Canada, Switzerland, Great Britain and Germany.
In addition, a 6th "guest" team from Lake Huron was also invited to participate, rounding out the fleet with 3 modern
and 3 classic 6 meters.
RACING RECAP
41

42
Day-1 featured two short windward/leeward aroundthe-cans
races, followed by a scenic distance race.
After the 2 buoy races, the fleet departed on a downwind
run from Port Madison, rounding the back-side
of Bainbridge Island and beating up the channel to a
windward finish-line set near Crystal Springs, opposite
Illihee State Park.
Boats were anchored for the night and crews shuttled
to the beach. This made for a beautiful back-drop as
guests socialized on the deck; the row of 6 meter sailboats
boats „parked“ in the distance.
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
Day-2 racing was the mirror opposite. Departing Crystal
Springs in light morning winds, the fleet was pushed
North towards Agate Pass Bridge. Favorable currents
sucked the boats back out into Port Madison to be
greeted by moderate winds and a hard-on-the-wind
beat back up to the finish line, set near Point Monroe.
Two more short windward/leeward races rapped-up the
weekend's competition schedule, before the fleet made
its way back to the PMYC docks for post-racing social
time.
SOCIAL RECAP
A regatta or sailing weekend is not complete without a
healthy social component, and this year's Queen Christina
Nations Cup was positively NOT short in this respect.
Visiting teams were generously hosted by friends
of the MacKey family, allowing for international visitors
to experience American culture first-hand.
Breakfast each morning was very-much a family affair,
as the entire MacKey family (including visiting daughter
Rose) prepared eggs, bacon, coffee, potatoes, pancakes...
...a veritable feast for all to enjoy, fueling-up
for their day on the water.
Evenings were high-lighted by lodge-style barbecues
and seafood dinners, followed by drinking, camaraderie
and cheer that went well into the night.
The large group of 24 sailors, 6 owners reps, numerous
hosts, team-entourage, friends and family became
a very close group - friendships that will easily last well
into the future.

RESULTS
Team Lake Huron on-board Gallant (KC 10), along with
boat-rep Ross Jespersen
As Lake Huron is part of the US - the host-nation for
this year's event - they were unfortunately not officially
eligible to compete for the coveted Queen Christina
Nations Cup Trophy. According to the official Queen
Christina Nations Cup dead-of-gift, the host nation is
not eligible to compete. Since Team Lake Huron is a
US sailing team, despite their strong results over the
rest of the fleet, 1st place defaulted to 2nd-placed Team
Canada.
43
Over the course of the weekend, Team Lake Huron
put on a stellar performance, earning 4 bullets out of
6 races sailed. Team Canada - helmed by 1992 Olympic
star-class team-member Eric Jespersen - was close
behind. With solid starts all weekend, the Canucks
excelled at consistency, finishing 3rd in each of the 3
races on day-1, plus earning a bullet for race-5 on day-
2. Team Switzerland rounded out the top-3, followed
by the UK, Germany and Finland.
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
Upon being handed the Queen Christina nations Cup
trophy, Canadian helmsman Eric Jespersen was quick
to announce in front of the international crowd that
Team Lake Huron had earned the trophy, and even if
they could not be recognized as the official regatta winners,
Team Canada would give them the Queen Christina
Nations Cup Trophy regardless, for them to proudly
bring back to their home-fleet. Team Canada earned a
secondary trophy for their excellent display of sportsmanship,
as well as having their team name engraved
on the trophy, as the official 2010 winners.
Canada (Team 6mR Vancouver) and Lake Huron share the
weekend's win...
Well done Sophie!
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
With lots of termination and preparation Hugo Stenbeck and his Sophie II team managed to take their second major
in only two years through the win of the 2010 European Championships in Brunnen, Switzerland. The competition
was very hard against the Bernard Haissly, who helmed Junior (ex Fleau).
Thus, the team Sophie will defend its title in Nynashamn 2012, which will be very exciting.
The Swedish fleet is gearing up for the 2011 6-Metre World’s in Helsinki..
On October 13th an impressive crowd of all 6-Metre owners in Stockholm together with crew members and 6-Metre
fans showed up to the autumn meeting at the Hotel Skeppsholmen, which has become the “club house” for the
6-Metre events in Stockholm.

ISMA News International 6mJI Association Bulletin 2/2010
Henrik Andersin, the chairman of the 2011 Organizing Committee, had come over from Helsinki for the evening
and did a very successful presentation of the event and related issues.
As a concrete result of the evening, almost all Swedish boats, soon back in Sweden, are preliminary entered to the
2011 World’s.
The preliminary racing programme 2011 in Stockholm was also discussed and agreed among the owners, where
all emphasized the importance of participating in the Stockholm Six Metre Grand Prix in early June 2011.
http://6mr.se
The 2011 Stockholm Six Metre Grand Prix
The Stockholm Six Metre Grand Prix June 2011 in the centre of Stockholm will be held on 2nd – 6th June, the 6th
being the National Day of Sweden. All the boats will stay in Stockholm until the following weekend to attend the
GSYS Big Boat Race on June 11th with the finish line outside the Royal Castle.
Therefore, an invitation has been sent to the Finnish Fleet to come and race in Swedish boats during June 8th – 10th
in Stockholm.
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
The planned regatta has been very well received by Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC) and the Stockholm Town
Hall as a part of the Olympic 100 Years Anniversary events to celebrate the1912 Stockholm Olympics, which will
include all sports of that game.
The anniversary will be the theme of the year for Stockholm, thus, a unique marketing opportunity for the International
6-Metre Class, which will be the only class racing in this event. All 6-Metre owners and teams can count
on fantastic racing and celebrations during this event. Therefore, we are welcoming all teams from abroad to this
regatta, which is promised to be spectacular!
European Championships July 20-27th 2012 in Nynashamn
The planning of the European Championships is well under way. Except from excellent racing, we are planning for
great after sail just opposite the NSS club harbour.
The club house for the Championship (picture above) will include several bars and BBQ for after sail. Furthermore,
a club restaurant and lounge for evening gatherings. It will also have facilities for Int. Jury and the Race
Committee. The view from the club house is just spectacular over the open sea and the archipelago. For those who
don’t want to be on the water everyday, can enjoy the sun on the sun deck and swim in the swimming pool..
Please, visit the Swedish 6mR website, where further information will be frequently presented. www.6mr.se

West Country Six Metre Open Meeting
18th-22nd May 2011
Sponsorship Opportunities
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
The British International Six Metre Class season began with in May
with the West Country Open Meeting in Falmouth. The Event, hosted
by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club (RCYC), brought together the
fleets from the Solent and West Country, visiting French 6mR’s, and
IOD’s from St Mawes. The last time the 6mR fleet assembled in any
strength in Falmouth Bay was for the 1988 European Championships.
Brian Pope did a sterling job organising the launching and recovery
with A&P Falmouth, apparently the crane was HUGE and the
boats were placed into the water quite effortlessly. It was then just
a few metres to the mooring at the Pendennis Marina adjacent to
the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. Robin Richardson kindly
helped out with the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions.
The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club was open from early afternoon for
Registrations thanks to the efforts of Gloria and Marilyn, Thank you
Ladies. BISMA were pleased to present all boats with a goody bag
courtesy of the Tresanton Hotel, and a sailing bag courtesy of North Sails. David Roberts and Andrew Thomas,
local members, sought out the sponsors, who also included Mount Gay Rum, The Cove restaurant at Maenporth,
Harveys Wharf at Discovery Quay. Mr Mike Carr (Joint MD) and Toby Allies (Sales and Marketing Director) of
Pendennis Shipyard presented perpetual Trophies, a Silhouette of a Modern and a Classic 6mR mounted on a solid
base, were presented to the Rees Martin on behalf of the class.
It was a fabulous evening at the club, the Members and officers were most welcoming and friendly, the familiar
and new faces of crews prepared and ready to go, and the anticipation of good times in store (whatever the forecast)!
The Skippers briefing kicked off at 8pm. All were happy and grateful to be in the very capable hands of Neil
Andrew and his team.
The first day was bright and sunny, with light winds and lighter forecast – unfortunately no enough breeze to race.
The crews were delighted to take the opportunity to tour the Pendennis Shipyard at the invitation of the Directors.
It was fascinating to see the state of the art facilities and see construction and renovation projects in situ.
The Race Management Team organised a great series of 7 races despite losing the first day due to lack of wind.
The Modern Fleet was led by Scoundrel (Rob Gray) with Wild Cat (Andy & Cathy Ash-Vie) and Lyonesse (Robert
Leigh-Wood) in close contention. Despite two Bullets on the last day for Lyonesse, Scoundrel held 1st, Lyonesse
2nd and WildCat 3rd. Other Moderns included Bear (Rees Martin), Maybe XI (Ian Knowles) together with Rumble
Bee (Claude Draeger) and Tsigane (Stefan O’Reilly-Highland) from France. In the Classic Fleet, Titia (Brian
Pope and Andy Postle) had a near perfect set of results, 6 bullets to count, with Erica (Peter Andrea) in 2nd place.
Abu (Rupert Street), St Kitts (Andrew Thomas) and Melita (David Roberts) completed the classic fleet. The International
One Designs from St Mawes started with the Classics and Kyla (Johnny Bingham) had six bullets to win
the class, followed by Wild Goose (Mike Conlin) and Sanchia (Nick Coppin). Mike Carr of Pendennis Shipyard,
hte Race Management team, volunteers and members of the RCYC joined us for the Prize Giving on the lawn at
the Royal Cornwall.
The event was a great success, the Royal Cornwall Yacht club were very welcoming and a great time was enjoyed
by all at the BBQ and Prize Giving.

ISMA News International 6mJI Association Bulletin 2/2010
over 1000ft of sail & have been kindly offered by the Commodore of RCYC (he is an owner as well ).
One evening after racing, and a quick wash & brush up, we will be collected by the Queen of Helford then travel
by Water to the Beauty of the River Helford , landing at the Gardens of Trebah , where a short walk through Tropical
Gardens will lead us to the Plantsman's Hall . Here we will be dined and wined to a high standard. Now as the
Tide had gone out & we need to go home in a Vintage Bedford Duple King Harry's Coach will arrive to take us all
back to Falmouth (some 6 miles ).
Aside from a free night for all to enjoy local delights, and perhaps a trip to Pendennis Castle Dungeon's, or Hotel
6mR Thoroughbreds at the heart of the International Metre Rule.
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
“If your eye is on the Twelve-Meters and the America’s
Cup, a real live Six is better than tank testing. But
racing a Six-Meter is sufficient reward in itself. Faster
boats for their length and sail area have been designed,
but none with quite the same feel, nor more deserving
of the term thoroughbred.”
The 6mR Calendar
This event is the first of the season which continues with boats moving on to La Trinité for the
L’ Entente Cordiale and the French Open and then to Helsinki for the World Cup in early August. Others return
to their home ports for local sailing and participation in the Metre & Classic Keelboat Regatta in Cowes Classics
Week at the end of July and the Tattinger Regatta at the Royal Yarmouth in mid August. The Calendar will be
finalised after the BISMA AGM 21st November 2010.
Recollections of a contented contender at the Queen Christina Nations Cup 2010.
Courtesy of Avia Willment, BISMA
The story begins with an afternoon flight from Heathrow, the last hundred pages of my Dan Brown Book, I don't
know how many movies, steerage, all four of us packed in like sardines. The first interesting experience on landing
was with an Indian, NOT the native variety, who loaded our bags into a cab that wallowed as we looked at it. With
a large intake of breath we all squeezed in and rocked our way from the airport to the Bainbridge Ferry Terminal
downtown. While the [taxi driver] tried to lull us into a false sense of security that he had never had a car crash
and his car, after various major surgical implants, had clocked up an impressive Million Miles (and boy did we
know he was telling the truth), we had glimpses of a city bursting with life on the shore of Puget Sound. Here, at
every opportunity, man had built incredible houses with docks and harbours nestled in among the forests and wood
covering every inch of the land in every direction.
We arrived a day early to try and feel normal by the time all the sailing and festivities were to start. Ha! we had
the amazing [good] fortune to be staying with the Reigning Tsar (see note 1 below) of the event and the creator
of the Queen Christina Nations Cup, Kimo. He [Kimo] charmed the pants off us (Richard-British Peewee-Irish
Joe-Scottish & Avia agreed to be Welsh, living close to the Border) and kept us enthralled until dinner which fused
into breakfast and we were well on our way to UK lunch time before hitting the sack. So much for feeling normal!
We stayed at the organizers home which was wonderful as most mornings half the teams descended for coffee and
all manner of foods. Every country was billeted to a family who owned a boat or was part of the vibrant small club
that just happened to be hosting one of the largest Kid Events of the summer. It was really the friendliest event I
have ever been to.
The first night we all met at the local Yacht Club where we. 6 countries in total, picked out two boats names from a
cowboy hat, a modern and a classic. The USA hosted teams from Switzerland, Germany, Canada, United kingdom,
Finland and replacing Sweden was Port Huron USA. Day 1, 3 races Day 2, 3 races. 2 short races and a very long
distance race round half the Island and then the reverse. Each boat had the owner or a representative on board.
Well, the boat we got day 1 was really quick especially down wind. With 2 short races then the long distance we
managed to make a good start winning the first race but slowly we broke this, ripped that, then 3/4 of the way
through the long race the trim tab gave up, my brain went dead and I gave the helm back to the owner.
It was fantastic, despite the age or quality of 6mR, every yacht stayed within minutes and seconds of one another
most of the long race. It was not until the last leg that some of the yachts finally showed their advantage. So closely
fought, crossing ahead then ducking, then crossing again all the way to the finish. Over all we came 4th, I think.
We’d then arrive at moorings at the bottom of someone's amazing log house, built at the turn of the century, for
a most wild and extraordinary party/BBQ. Great place wonderful people and good time had by all. The boys can
fill in the rest about the filming, the togas and the murder scene of a girl dressed as a lamb as we all looked on.
The climb, out and up the hill through the forest tipsy, as no road reached the house, it only became obvious how
dramatic it all was when we had to return the next day in daylight to get back to the boats.
Kimos impeccable timing of tides, a word with god re wind direction and we were off. The second day we had
a classic and again everyone was always within inches of one another. At one point the wind died as we passed
through a narrow channel under a bridge from the island to the mainland, the tide running at about 2 knots. We all
glided through, some on the North side, some on the South of the narrow channel, it was absolute torture. We could
see the wind line and it was taking chunks out of our lives as we willed our boats to get to it (In reality it was only
about 20mins.) As each boat caught the breeze at 15 knots they were off to the finish. Way off in the distance and
every boat behind would watch in utter frustration until it too reached the wind. The separation between us all was
huge and unrecoverable but it was the most fantastic day out on the water!
All of this was in brilliant sparkling sea and sun, perfect sea state and wind for 6m's. But the camaraderie between
the countries and crew with incredible, parties every night, visits to see Kimos' Saga (being rebuilt with the assistance
of the most remarkable young boat builder from Finland Alan) ... Trip to see the classic boat show… Friends
houses, the Yacht Club, Walks on the beaches with seals, tours of the City, everyone involved giving 110% to making
the event a trip of a life time.
Many, many thanks to all those that made it possible including the Canadians who towed 2 boats from Miles North
so we could have fun. Many will go home with tales of exploits not least the Fins who in the midnight hours found
the casino run by the natives. Anyone would think this was the wild wild west!
PMYC hosted 29 visiting sailors and six teams from Canada, Switzerland, Germany, UK, Finland, and Port Huron.
This year’s racing included four round-the-buoy races and two distance races. The fleet sailed from Port Madison
to Crystal Springs, where they anchored for the night and then sailed back the next day.
Officially Canada won. Port Huron had a better score (by far), but they were not an official team (per Deed of Gift)
since they had been invited to participate because the Swedish team dropped out. Canada beat Switzerland due to
bonus points (awarded for sailors under 25, sailors over 65, sailors who were participating in QCNC for the first
time, sailors who provided boats), which we used as the tie-breakers. However, in the spirit of the Nation’s Cup,
the Canadians let the Port Huron team take the trophy home. Next year, we believe that Switzerland will host the
QCNC.
This event is about celebrating the Six Meters, getting to know other people who love the boats and about racing.
If you are wondering how the US/PMYC members fared, the host team does not compete; instead PMYC
members puts their energy into providing boats, lodging, meals and fun for the visiting sailors. This year lots of
PMYC members contributed to the success of the regatta. They moved their boats off the dock, loaned their Sixes
to complete strangers, had visitors stay in their homes, supplied potluck dinners, and entertained the international
guests (Val Tollefson took his Swiss guests flying).
Here are the Official QCNC results. (Please see attached PDF FILE!)
Rolex Baltic Classic Week
KIEL.
A & R wird
AIDA 2
„Sleipnir II“-Taktiker Albert Schweitzer war jedenfalls
restlos begeistert: „Die Faszination Sechser kommt immer
wieder.
Man
1938 in Finnland gebauten „Lillevi“.
Auftrag an Westin.
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
Monaco Classic Week 2011
Dear Tim,
Dear Beat,
ISMA News International 6mJI Association
Thank you for your inquiry regarding Monaco. I have not decided about next year’s schedule yet, but it is not
excluded, that I will join Monaco with MENA next September, since we used to go to Cannes, where the 6 Metre
races have now been stopped. Maybe Monaco is a good alternative. However, I will not be able to make any definite
plans before the end of the winter. In particular, since we move MENA up to Helsinki, it will afterwards be a
very long way to go to Monaco.
One good news at this occasion: It is almost certain, that Jan-Willem Ympa with the Dutch 6 Metre “Fiona” will
come to Helsinki next summer. I have just spoken to him while I was in Shanghai, China, where he lives.
I also offered to him to bring the boat after Helsiniki to Flensburg. This will allow for a number of races in the
spring of 2012, and then a cheap transportation to Stockholm. It should also be announced to Swiss, British and
other participants, that Flensburg would be a good interim hub. We would certainly be able to offer enough storage
and/or berthing space in Flensburg. Also, it would be a good opportunity for those teams to explore the Flensburg
Fjord prior to the Worlds in 2013. Maybe you want to communicate this option also to your national classes.
Best regards for today
Closing words
A lot of us had a splendid sailing season, either in Europe or in USA. Now we are preparing our 6mJI for next years
sailing. Hopefully a great number of us will meet in Finland to sail the World Cup 2011 in Helsinki.
Thanks to all 6mJI friends sending us their reports and photographs. This gets the ISMA news richer and more
interesting.
Wishing you a good end of the year, a good wintertime, some skiing but also cosy hours with your family and
friends.
All the best to you all
