RBST Recruits its
First City Farm
Situated just 10 minutes walk from London’s financial centre,
Spitalfields has become the first inner-city farm to join RBST’s farm
parks network.
As well as its rare breeds animals, Spitalfields City Farm has
gardening and cookery projects and play areas all designed to offer
a valuable focus for the local community. On the farm side, there
are Castlemilk Moorit, North Ronaldsay, South Down and Welsh
Badgerface sheep, Golden Guernsey goats and a Shetland pony, plus
donkeys and a variety of poultry and small petting animals.
For the local community, the farm offers an after-school club
and a Saturday-morning Young Farmers clubs. Spitalfields’ young
farmers learn to work with the animals and even get the opportunity
to show them at the Capel Manor City Harvest Festival. Run in
conjunction with the Federation of City Farms and Community
Gardens, this show brings together local community farms and
gardens from across London.
Farm animal manager Helen Galland says: “The farm is the heart
of the place. It gives children and young people the chance to learn
respect and responsibility for animals and with the annual show,
gives them a goal to work towards.”
Spitalfields relies heavily on various types of National Lottery
funding as well as the good will of an army of local volunteer workers.
With no natural grazing, costs involve the transportation of hay
for year-round feeding and challenges include finding vets in inner
London with the necessary large animal expertise.
Asked what she hopes the closer link with RBST will mean
for Spitalfields, Helen says: “One of our priorities is some off-site

grazing so that our animals can spend some time in a more
natural environment – a bit like in the days when cows were
kept in central London to supply milk and then went off to the
countryside for a holiday. It would also be good to form links
with other farm parks so that our young people can get a wider
experience of different animals.”
Welcoming Spitalfields to the RBST network, Trustee Viki Mills
says: “It is very impressive to see what Helen and the Spitalfields
team have managed to achieve on just one-and-a-quarter acres.
They may only have a small number of animals, but what they have
includes some quite rare blood lines which they are keen to build
up. City farms offer important community benefits and we hope
that more will be joining our network.”
