Market Square, Lisburn
Welcome
To the City of Lisburn
Lisburn City is the second largest City in Northern Ireland and is set
in the beautiful Lagan Valley area covering an area of 174 square
miles of contrasting open countryside and many charming towns
and villages. Lisburn City centre is a perfect combination of
architectural buildings and streets dating from the 18 th Century
together with modern buildings, making it a lively bustling modern
City with a captivating history.
Lisburn was founded in the early 17 th Century and its name in Irish is
Lios na gCearbhach or Lisnagarvey, which means the 'fort of
gamesters'. It is thought that the modern name of Lisburn came into
use around 1662 as the earliest reference to the name was found in a
baptismal entry of 11 th January of that year. It has also been
suggested that Lisnagarvey was changed to Lisburn because the
town was burned in the rebellion of 1641. Today, many local sports
clubs pay tribute by still carrying the title Lisnagarvey in their name.
Lisburn is also known as the birthplace of Ireland's linen industry,
which was restructured and enhanced in 1698 by Louis Crommelin
and other Huguenots. The Irish Linen Industry of years gone by can
be appreciated through a permanent exhibition housed in the Irish
Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum in the City centre.
The City of Lisburn is known for its superior shopping, outdoor
activities, sporting and cultural attractions, restaurants and heritage
sites. An extensive portfolio of top class events takes place
throughout the year, including the Ulster Grand Prix, National
Countrysports Fair, Hillsborough International Oyster Festival and the
Northern Ireland Festival of Racing.
Lisburn is the City for Life.
the heritage of the region is rich, colourful
and varied.

Historic Villages
Hillsborough
Hillsborough is one of the City’s famous showpiece
villages. A glorious example of Georgian architecture,
the village is an explosion of colour during the spring
and summer months regularly featuring in ‘Ulster in
Bloom’ and ‘Best Kept Village’ Awards. The village also
plays host to the International Oyster Festival each
September.
Amongst the village’s many architectural delights is
Hillsborough Castle, a magnificent two-storey
mansion house dating from 1797 incorporating an
earlier house from 1760. It was the former home of
the Hill family - the Marquises of Downshire, from
whom the village takes its name. In its present
incarnation it is the official residence of the Secretary
of State for Northern Ireland and regular Royal Garden
Parties are staged within its grounds.
It was at this illustrious location for five days in
October 1771 that the then Secretary of State for the
Colonies, Wills Hill (later 1 st Marquis of Downshire)
played host to Benjamin Franklin. It is said that the
animosity between the two men contributed to the
American War of Independence.
Opposite the Courthouse, just off the Main Street, is
the 17 th Century Hillsborough Fort which provides a
fabulous centrepiece for the Forest, where one can
take a leisurely stroll around its lakeshore, admire its
varied flora and fauna and relax in its tranquil
surroundings. Yet in centuries past this building had a
more martial role due to the fact that it commanded
the strategic Kilwarlin Pass, and was made a Royal
Fortress during the reign of Charles II, with Sir Arthur
Hill appointed hereditary constable in command of a
garrison of twenty warders.
So why not spend a few hours exploring the village’s
rich heritage and its many speciality shops before
sampling the food at one of the village’s award
winning pub restaurants.
Dromara
Dromara is an excellent base for exploring the
unspoilt County Down countryside. Don’t miss
Legananny Dolmen, a prehistoric three-legged ‘giant
cave’ just outside the village. The River Lagan’s source
is Slieve Croob in the Dromara hills from which it
flows through the village, making its way through the
City of Lisburn and out to the sea at Belfast Lough.
Moira
Moira has a rich and varied past and can claim
amongst other things in the late 17 th Century the first
‘hot-house’ to be built in Europe, which was erected in
the grounds of Moira Castle. Now it and the Castle
are known only to the pages of history.
In the literary field it can claim a connection to the
poet W.B. Yeats, whose grandfather and namesake
was the Curate at the parish church of St John’s in
the village.
The village is another Georgian architectural
masterpiece and is a record-breaking winner of
‘Britain in Bloom’ Awards. Every shop, house,
courtyard and archway of this lovely little country
village is festooned with colour. Visitors to the village
can leave with an assortment of gifts including its
internationally renowned sausages.
Harry Ferguson Memorial, Growell
Crewe Hill
The Kings of Ulster were proclaimed at Crewe Hill on
the eastern side of Glenavy parish. The hill rises to
192m where there is a rath, which may have been a
royal residence on the south side and a coronation
stone on the summit. Access is restricted. For more
information contact the Lisburn Tourist Information
Centre on Tel: 028 9266 0038.
Downshire Monument
The Downshire Monument can be seen when
travelling from Hillsborough to Dromara village. A
testimonial to the third Marquis, this tall and
imposing fluted Doric column of dressed stone has a
square base on a podium of three tall, raked steps.
The Downshire Coat of Arms is inset in its base. The
third Marquis died whilst visiting his estate in
Blessington, County Wicklow. His funeral procession
was said to have been the longest seen in Ireland.
Duneight Motte
and Bailey
Situated on the outskirts of Legacurry you will find
this very fine example of a 12 th Century early Norman
fortification. The motte is roughly triangular in shape
and is guarded on the west side by a substantial ditch
and bank. It has a maximum width of about 17.5m
and rises about 10m above the ditch on the west side.
The Ravernet River forms the southern boundary.
Between the motte and the bailey is a ditch about 8m
wide and 1.8m deep. Around the base of the mound a
half-moon shaped bailey is very visible.
Giant’s Ring
The Giant’s Ring is a most impressive earthwork, over
200m in diameter, surrounded by a bank of gravel and
boulders, which has five entrances. Near the centre is
a megalithic chamber made up of five upright stones
with a single capstone dating from around 3000 BC.
The original purpose of this site was probably as a
meeting place or a cult centre. In the 18 th Century the
area was used for racing horses.
Harry Ferguson Memorials
Harry Ferguson (from Growell, Hillsborough) achieved
worldwide fame with his invention of the Ferguson
3-point linkage system. This system still forms the
basis of almost every tractor made today.
The Harry Ferguson Memorial Garden, opposite his
birthplace, is open to the public and every August an
annual event is held in his honour.
A bronze memorial piece in Hillsborough Forest
commemorates the centenary of his first flight on 31 st
December 1909.
There is also a Harry Ferguson self-guided tour trail
and map which follows in the footsteps of this truly
remarkable engineer and inventor. Call into the
Lisburn or Hillsborough Tourist Information Centres
to pick up a copy of this trail guide (car essential).
Lisburn Historic
Quarter
For many hundreds of years, Lisburn’s strategic
location on the River Lagan made it an important
economic hub linking Belfast and Dublin. The area
now known as the Historic Quarter was first laid out
in the 17 th Century. It falls within a designated
Conservation Area, which includes Market Square,
Castle Street and Bridge Street. A great fire
destroyed this area in 1707, but an attractive 18 th
Century streetscape was rebuilt on the original
layout and this has remained largely unchanged to
the present day.
In 1760 Wills Hill built a market house (the Central
Arcade block) with the aim of attracting linen
manufacturers to the area. In 1810 the North and
South Wings were added. The South Wing was used
as an open market hall and the North Wing housed a
courtroom, which was operational until 1986 and now
houses a display on the Irish Legal System.
Hillsborough Tourist Information Centre is located in
the building, which is also used for craft fairs, book
Walking
Walkers will be in their element as the City has a wide
range of options for rambling – from the hilly tracks
around Dromara and Colin Mountains to the softer
level trails of the lakes, rivers and waterways. The
towpath along the River Lagan from Union Locks in
Lisburn to Stranmillis in Belfast is a favourite.
Another popular walk along the River Lagan is from
the village of Aghalee along the towpath of the old
Lagan Canal to Moira Railway Station. There is a large
expanse of water on this stretch of the river known as
Broadwater, which is a breeding and wintering
ground for a large variety of wildfowl.
Walking around the villages and the City centre is a
unique way to explore the heritage offered by each of
these places.
