*Each unit will have a test as well as a culminating project. Projects include a trailer for a monster movie, an
EVALUATION:
Unit Summative Tasks 70%.
Exam 30%
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
Formative assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and may include several short assignments,
quizzes, regular homework practice activities, and various creative pieces. Formative assessment is designed
to practice and reinforce skills learned in class and prepare students for the summative tasks. Students will
receive teacher feedback that will encourage improvement and skill building for the final summative
assessment for the unit.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
You are required to be present for all tests, in-class assignments, and presentations. If you are unable to be
present the day of the assessment, appropriate documentation (note from parent) of a legitimate absence
must accompany your return to class in order for you to be eligible to make up the missed assessment. If you
FEF 1D
know you will be absent for an assessment, please notify the teacher immediately so alternate arrangements
may be made. If you are truant you will receive a mark of zero.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS:
While we in the French department have used many strategies to curb late assignments, including helping
students develop better time-management skills, planning for major assignments to be completed in stages,
providing checklists for the completion of major assignments, and maintaining communication between
students, parents and teachers, we feel it is necessary to now incorporate the following into our strategies:
Upon receiving an assignment, Student Success will be notified. When possible, a Student Success
teacher will be present in the class at the time the assignment is presented.
When available, a Student Success teacher will be present in the class while the students are working
on their project. Students who are not using their time productively will be put under the supervision
of the Student Success teacher. This way, the classroom teacher will be available to help those who
need it instead of spending her time keeping a select few on task. The goal here is to prevent a late
assignment before it happens.
Students are expected to submit their assignments on the due date at the beginning of class. If they fail to
do so, the following steps will be taken:
They will explain the reason why their assignment is late. It is at the discretion of the teacher to
determine whether or not this is a legitimate reason (for example computer problems, illness, or
family emergency).
If the reason is deemed legitimate, students have the next two days to submit the assignment
without penalty.
If the reason is not legitimate, or they still have not submitted their work after the two day window,
contact will be made with parents via phone or email to explain the situation and to make the parents
clear of the consequences.
The student will scrap the original project. They will come up with a new assignment that meets the
expectations of the current one, but that is in no way dependant on the information that have already
accumulated. They will also present a new due date. In essence, they will start from scratch. (This is,
of course, pending the approval of the classroom teacher.)
Students will be expected to attend Student Success everyday at lunch and/or after school until the
assignment is done.
ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:
Throughout the semester students will be assessed across three categories; oral communication, reading, and
writing. Not every assignment will assess all three categories. See the achievement chart for more detailed
expectations.
KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL YEAR:
Use class time efficiently. Think, listen, and participate.
Copy all notes given in class.
Do all your homework. Do not fall behind.
Ask questions to clarity concepts you don’t understand.
Work diligently on rough drafts and seek assistance for revision.
COURSE EXPECTATIONS:
Students are expected to come to class with the required materials.
FEF 1D
Class time is to be used effectively and students are expected to focus on the task at hand.
It is imperative that students take responsibility for their own learning, attend all classes, and be
punctual.
When absent, the student is responsible for obtaining class notes and completing the required
homework for the missed lessons.
Students are expected to hand in all assignments on the assigned due date.
Students are expected to abide by all classroom rules.
LEARNING SKILLS:
Progress in the areas of learning skills will be monitored, recorded, and evaluated separately from academic
achievement. They include work habits/homework, organization, initiative, teamwork, and a student’s ability
to work independently.
