RYCOTE MICROPHONE WINDSHIELDS 

The Rycote modular system replaces the familiar suspension system tailored for a few 

microphone types, with a modular approach, that allows almost any microphone, 

from 40mm to 600+mm, including stereo pairs, to be shock-mounted and provided 

with varying degrees of wind-shielding. Modular suspension systems are interchangeable 

with the new Modular windshields, High-Wind covers and Windjammers. 

Modular Suspensions 

The Modular Suspension is machined from aluminium and hard-anodized in black. It 

comes in 4 different bar (module) lengths. Each kit contains a pistol-grip with an 

integral XLR holder and 3 /8" thread socket, a lightweight boom adaptor (also 3 /8" 

socket) and a range of unbreakable clips for 19/20, 21/22 and 25mm microphones, 

suitable for the Sennheiser MKH series microphones. Clips for wide-bodied microphones 

(30mm) are also available. The suspension elements, replaceable silicone 

rubber in two different “weights” are provided. A hex key for adjustments and bag of 

spare parts are included. 

There is a special half-module version for Schoeps and Neumann compact microphones, 

and also 120mm hoop systems (Stereo) for large-diameter microphones and 

stereo pairs. Stereo systems are usually fitted with back-to-back rivetted clips for 

specific MS microphone pairs, and a novel geometry XY/MS mount is available for 

Neumann AK and Schoeps CCM capsule devices as an optional accessory. 

NOTE: Half module units have one hoop. 1, 2 and 3-module units have two hoops. 

Connbox 

The Connbox, an optional accessory to the Modular suspension, is a connector 

system to minimise cable-borne handling noise. This is available in mono (NC3MZB) 

and stereo (NC5MXB) versions with colour-coded cable lengths. Ultra-light microphone 

tails are fitted with anti-rattle (NC3FZLB) connectors or Lemo for the Schoeps 

CCM range. Connboxes are ordered as complete kits but all parts are replaceable 

and interchangeable. 

Modular windshields 

Basket windshields provide excellent wind-noise reduction. Manufactured in light grey, 

using a plastic mesh and a shielding fabric that is laminated by a special process, they 

slide on to the Modular Suspension to give easy access. Front & rear caps use a fast 

twist-on bayonet fitting. With the new Modular mono windshields, extension pieces 

can be fitted to the front ring to extend the length of windshield. A wide range of sizes 

are available to cater for almost every microphone. Technical support will be happy to 

advise you on which model is suitable for your microphones, and the most popular 

sizes are available from stock and listed in the table below. 

High Wind Covers 

High Wind Covers can be fitted to windshields to provide approximately 3-5dB 

improvement in wind-noise. These are manufactured from a dark grey fleece material, 

held in place by Velcro fasteners. Each cover fits one specific size of windshield. 

Windjammers 

Windjammers are synthetic fur fabric covers in two-tone grey and give 12dB+ of windnoise 

reduction over a standard windshield. They fit securely using a double zip 

fastener. The materials used are exceptionally transparent to audio and will remain so 

if regularly groomed with the brush provided. Each Windjammer fits one specific size 

of windshield, including the Sennheiser MZW range of windshields. 

Modular Windshield kits 

All eight standard sizes of mono Modular Windshield sizes are now available as a 

complete kit. Each kit includes the correct modular suspension fitted into the Modular 

windshield (plus extension piece if required) and Windjammer.

Baby Ball Gags 

These small windshields are constructed of the same high-quality materials as the fullsize 

Rycote windshields but are fitted with a resilient grommet that grips directly onto 

the microphone body, allowing wind-noise reduction when used with existing 

mountings and handheld microphones. They are used widely for protecting ORTF 

set-ups. 

The Baby Ball gag can be opened for fitting microphones with a ball head or tapered 

body from the inside. For microphones with straight bodies it is simply pushed on. 

There are three sizes, for body diameters of 20mm, 22mm and 25mm. For additional 

wind protection a furry windjammer cover is available. 



Softie windshield and shock mount system 

A combined windshield, shock mount and pistol-grip offering a cost-effective solution. 

Available in three microphone diameters - SH (19/21mm), MH (21/22mm), LH 

(24/25mm) - and various internal depths (the blind hole that the microphone fits into). 

It is essential for correct operation that the Softie front section covers all the slots 

along the length of the microphone. See table below.

Short Hair Softie 

Specially designed for camera-mounted microphones and designed to avoid unnecessary 

shadows when working in camera-mounted conditions. Closely cropped dark 

grey synthetic fur, just 10mm high, offers a lower profile and more compact design 

without severely altering the efficiency of the Softie. See table below for

The new MultiMount v2 is a lighter weight version of the original MultiMount designed 

to be used on either a camera hot shoe or on a boom pole. The MultiMount v2 comes 

in 3 different Softie mount sizes and is fitted with a 3/8” Whitworth female insert into 

which fits a brass hot shoe adaptor. 

Softie Mount CCA 

A versatile ‘Camera Clamp Adaptor’, the CCA fits a number of camcorders with on 

board microphone clamps (including the Sony HDR-Z1 and the Canon XL series) to 

enable an external microphone to be shock mounted onto the camera via the familiar 

Rycote Softie rubber suspension mount (included) in three standard sizes (see index 

’Rycote Softie’). A 3/8” Whitworth tapped hole in the base allows it to be fitted neatly 

on to microphone stands and boom poles, and can even be hand held at a push.

Mini windjammers 

Designed for the semi-professional and camcorder market, but made from similar 

materials as their ‘big brothers’ these small windjammers are intended to fit over 

existing foam windshields on camcorders. They may be extremely useful as added 

wind protection for reporter or location mics. Available in six sizes, the small, medium 

and large with popper fastenings and the special with Velcro fastening. Small size fits 

over Canford windshields C5/C8/C10, Medium size fits over C13.

Gustbuster 

Designed to fit most consumer camcorders with an integral microphone, the 

Gustbuster Mini Windjammer works like an eye patch, being held in place with two 

adjustable elastic straps to give affordable wind protection. 

Lavalier Furry: 

This Windjammer (furry) is designed to be used on lavalier microphones worn on the 

outside of clothing. To ensure a proper fit it includes an internal removable soft foam 

insert. The internal foam is designed to hold many popular sized lavalier microphones 

and to also provide the air space required, ensuring the Windjammer is effective. 

Included are 2 spare foams. The fur covering is manufactured so that the opening can 

be stretched to accommodate the microphone and fit snugly around the cable. In 

some instances the user may prefer to use the windscreen that came with a lavalier 

microphone, then it is possible for the foam supplied to be removed and the lavalier 

foam or metal windscreen to be inserted into the Windjammer instead. Colour black, 

with grey and white versions available to special order.
