Doctor by examination is the official term for a “new”
doctor, in Latin doctor iuvenis. Such a doctor may
choose to be present at or absent from (absens) the
conferment ceremony. He/she may also choose not to
participate in the conferment of doctoral degrees at
all, in which case his/her name will not appear in the
conferment document.
“The laurel girls” symbolize the nine muses. In the 19th
century there was also a little boy symbolizing Apollo
presenting the diplomas, but as number of participants
of the ceremony grew, it became too overwhelming for
a 5-year old and an usher replaced him.
