AKDN organisations have been working in Afghanistan since 1995,
implementing a multi-sectoral rural development programme
incorporating interventions in health, education, natural resource
management and enterprise development.
Revitalising the local economy requires substantial investment in human
capital, as well as financial resources to support small rural enterprises.
In rural northern and central areas, AKF is working to build human
capital through its vocational training programme, covering areas such
as English, communications technology and car mechanics. There are
also interventions in adult literacy and numeracy aimed at strengthening
the skills of local communities as they plan and implement their own
development priorities.
Under its enterprise programme, AKF supports small enterprises
through business development service providers who give advice
to entrepreneurs in a range of sectors, including honey bee-keeping,
poultry, carpet weaving and cashmere processing.

Village Organisations and special interest
groups – including groups for agriculture,
livestock, poultry, gender, health, education
and infrastructure – are formed with the
support of AKF, to help member families
establish savings funds and increase
income-generating activities.
The Afghanistan Rural Micro-credit Programme has now provided loans
to thousands of borrowers in rural areas, and has helped to create
22,000 new jobs.

quality of education in schools and increase access to primary education
