Seventh-Day Adventist Church
South Queensland Conference APR 2013
Nurturing Disciples
In a Healthy Growing Church
Reaching out and Connecting
The “Against All Odds” South
Queensland and Northern Australian
Conference Camporee saw just under
1000 people camp together in the Secret
Valley at Ilbilbie Station, surrounded on 3
sides by two adjoining rivers, over the Easter
long weekend.
One hundred and seven people were involved
in preparing and running the Camporee
with some working 14-hour days
during the set up week. District Directors,
Ken Simpson and Laurie Green and their
wives had been onsite since early March in
pre-preparation. Approximately 10 semitrailer
loads of infrastructure and gear was
required and installed for the camporee.
Easter Friday saw
the arrival and registration
of 845 Pathfinder
Club members,
representing
33 clubs. At registration,
594 preordered
souvenir
T-shirts were dis-
Newsletter of the South Queensland Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
Conference Camporee
tributed. During camporee Master Guide
Force helped manage the handing out of
214 bags of ice. Many key staff worked 16-
hour days to fulfil their ministry roles at
camporee. The station owners, Evan and
Julie Nicolson and their families, couldn’t
believe how friendly and nice people were.
They were deeply impressed with the Pathfinders
and their staff and were excited to
be a part of camporee. They even attended
some of the evening programs.
It was surprising how many in the local
community reported that they used to
attend Pathfinders and had fond memories
of it even though they no longer
attend church. Pathfinder ministry continues
to impact people positively toward
the church. There are many unchurched
young people in Pathfinder Clubs in both
conferences that are learning about Christ
and are choosing to be a part of God’s
kingdom.
The guest speaker, Andrew West, challenged
the young people to live a life of
faith in action through the story of Gideon
and reminded them that against all odds,
God always comes through! Many decisions
for Christ were made and are still
being processed. If you haven’t already
heard some of the stories from camporee,
ask someone from a Pathfinder Club and
enjoy hearing and seeing how God’s hand
still moves in world-changing ways, right
here, right now, against all odds!

Take The Challenge—Hike or
Bike To A Better Life in 2013!
by Neil Marks MPH, Director of Health & Children’s Ministries
The challenge is for a family, church group or social group
to engage in a creative, interesting, memorable, fun and
fitness event some time during the 2013 Health Week period,
Saturday May 4 through to Sunday May 12.
Send in a report of the event/experience to the conference
Health Department and submissions will be judged as to what
is deemed to be the most creative, memorable, group, fun and
fitness experience. First prize will receive $100, second prize
$60, and third prize, $40 with the winning entries featuring
in the conference FOCUS newsletter.
The vision is for this to become an annual event and an
excuse for people to get together outdoors and be physically
active. Maybe it might even lead to the planning of other activities
in other weeks of the year
For instance, my family lives on the southside of Brisbane
in the Wishart area. A family bike ride into Brisbane, along
the river and then out again, would be a 40-to-50 kilometre
round trip. We would plan a special lunch and hopefully
create a memorable family experience.
So start planning today, and let the conference Health Department
know about your activity, and maybe more than
body and soul will end up enriched.
Submissions can be sent the following ways:
Adventist
Presence Grows
at Major Children’s Ministry Expo
by Pastor Neil Marks, Director of Health & Children’s Ministries
It is the number one children’s ministry
event in the country. It has grown
every year since its beginning in March
2005, and so has the Adventist presence
at this event.
The IGNITE 2013 Children’s Ministry
Conference and Expo, is a massive,
annual Children’s Ministry event
organised by the Queensland Children’s
Ministry Network (QCMN), composed
of 20 different Christian denominations.
The Brisbane event this year, held in a
Mueller College near Redcliffe, attracted
a record 800 participants, overshadowing
yet again both the Melbourne and
Sydney events.
What has been significant over the
years however, is the steadily increasing
Adventist presence and influence at
this event. A few years ago, the Adventist
contingent was the third largest of all
the churches with 55 in attendance, and
this tremendous result was similar again
this year. Recent years have also seen the
increasing involvement of Adventists as
presenters at the event. Three Adventist
Children’s Ministry Directors have lead
out in workshops including; Julie Weslake
from the South Pacific Division,
Darren Pratt from North New South
Wales Conference and David Edgren
from Victorian Conference. They have
conducted workshops in storytelling,
Christian writing and publishing, ballooning,
what it takes to grow children
into spiritual champions, intergenerational
worship, and children in service.
At IGNITE 2013, more than 50 Adventists
attended and new ground was
broken by the South Queensland Children’s
Ministry Department in operating
an Adventist booth—“Children’s Ministry
Resources: SDA Church” at the
Expo. Working with the Children’s Ministry
Advisory, the Adventist Book Centre
in Dakabin, and Christian Life Resources
at Eight Mile Plains, displayed an impressive
range of children’s ministry resources
developed by our church over the past
five or six years for the first time. Many
stopped by the booth and more than 50
order forms were taken by people at the
conference.
To anyone involved in Children’s Ministry
in the local church, at home or
at school, this event is a must on your
annual calendar.
You will leave inspired by the worship
and plenary speakers, equipped by the
40 to 50 different workshop options, and
connected to all sorts of other children’s
ministry people and resources.
Draw a circle around the first Saturday
of March 2014 (March 1), and join
with nearly a thousand others who have
a heart for children. You will not be
disappointed!
Alive In Christ… at Inala
deaconesses’ ordination and baptism highlighted
a special day at the Inala church on
A
Sabbath March 2, 2013. The service began with
the ordaining of the deaconesses with Pastor
Neil Tyler officiating. This was followed by
Daniel Aumatangi walking through the waters
of baptism with Pastor Tyler.
Daniel, together with some of his friends, has
been studying with Pastor Tyler for sometime.
Daniel, a young man of 20 years, delivered a
moving testimony of how Pastor Tyler’s first
sermon at Inala convicted him of the need to
give his heart to Jesus. He also paid tribute to
the church he has attended from a young age,
Inala.
The church was filled to overflowing with
half of the congregation under 30 years of age.
Many had travelled from other churches to see
this young man take his stand for God.
Daniel was involved in preparing the program.
He selected the hymns, the scripture
reading (Isaiah 49:14-15) and he led with the
prayer during the worship service. Daniel also
sang with Tama Manual, who is another committed
young man, a lovely song called, “I’ve
Surrendered My Life.”
The congregation sang his favourite song,
“Shout to the Lord” before he was welcomed
into the fellowship of the Inala church. After
his baptism, Daniel was then ordained as a
deacon, having served as a trainee deacon for
some years.
It was a very
special day
for Daniel, his
church, his
friends and his
family.
They were joined by representatives
from the Westpac Bank, architects/
project managers Paynter Dixon and
local site management for a tour of the
construction site.
Board members were shown samples
of the colour schemes to be used
throughout the new building. The
project is beginning to become a reality.
Adventist Aged Care is excited by the
opportunities that the brand new building and facilities will bring:
89 new beds in high quality rooms, most with individual ensuites, a
new state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, laundry, admin/reception,
cafe and beautiful grounds. Residents will have access to a special
care unit and palliative care facilities, if they have a need for them.
Glenvale
Breakfast Is Served @
Glenvale
On Febuary
2, the Glenvale
Seventhday
Adventist
Church was
graced with
a special visitor
from the
community.
Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul
Antonio showed up to be interviewed
and stayed for the entire worship service.
The popular mayor announced the guest
speaker for the upcoming Mayoral Prayer
Breakfast on May 14.
“We’re delighted to bring Mrs Lindy
Chamberlain-Creighton to Toowoomba for
this special event. Her amazing story of
faith and forgiveness in light of what she’s
been through will inspire us all.”
“It was an honour to be joined by my
friend Mayor Antonio for church today,”
said senior pastor Casey Wolverton. “We
intend to do everything we can help the
council sell out tickets for this important
event.”
Toowoomba’s Prayer Breakfast is widely
considered to be the largest and oldest
Mayoral Prayer Breakfasts in Australia,
attracting more than 800 attendees each
year in recent times.
Students at Avondale
College in 2013
Eleven Glenvale youth continue their
Christian education this year as they study
at Avondale College of Higher Education;
the highest number ever from our
church! They all graduated from Year
12 at Darling Downs Christian School
(DDCS) in recent years, and an additional
five former DDCS students are studying
at Avondale in 2013. Dayn McKay
encouraged many of his friends to share
the Avondale experience with him, and
Jordan, Tegan, Bentley, Lawson and
Claudia (pictured here) are enjoying the
benefits of studying at Avondale too!
The church of TOMORROW continues
to take part in the church of TODAY at the
Gold Coast Central Seventh-day Adventist
Church.
The Gold Coast Central Church was
recently thrilled and privileged to see its
young people again taking the lead in
serving the Lord in worship. The church
boasts a generous number of young
people who love the opportunity to
become involved in sharing their love for
Jesus with others.
Mt Gravatt
The Big Picture For Little
People
On Sabbath March 23, Mt Gravatt
Church Children’s Ministries hosted a
Children’s Agape Feast as children from
Cradle Roll to Earliteens combined with
parents and Sabbath school teachers for
a special morning. Singing, a Lego crucifixion
scene and animated DVD presentations
were designed to open and raise the
children’s understanding of Communion
and the Last Supper. Pastor Zeny Vidacak
led worship and shared the story of the
Jewish Passover and Jesus’ death on the
cross. Tables in the shape of the cross lit
with candles reinforced the sacred message
of Jesus’ sacrifice for all.
The children then shared foot washing
with their parents followed by an
unblessed communion served by the
children’s Sabbath school teachers. The
program finished with a dedication activity
as children nailed their name to a cross in
order to symbolise their love for Jesus.
Hervey Bay
When An Elephant
Becomes Just Too Small
For The Job
The Hervey Bay Primary/Junior Sabbath
school class, having listened intently to
their mission stories, decided they wanted
to help others own Bibles. To that end,
a bank in the shape of an elephant was
found, and each time money was placed
in the bank, the class made a “trumpeting”
sound to show the elephant’s delight!
During the first quarter, the class collected
a total of $73.65 for Bibles. Hoping to
collect more in the second quarter, the
children brought handfuls of coins when
possible, to place in their bank. On 13th
Sabbath, the little elephant was opened
and great care was taken to remove all
the money that had been stuffed inside!
After counting the money, it was found
that the Hervey Bay Primary/Junior class
had collected more than $100.00 on their
own for that quarter. Some of the church
members also felt impressed to contribute
to the cause. The ensuing result A final
total of $208.50 that can be used to assist
those in need of owning a Bible. Since the
project has been such a great success the
children & leaders of Hervey Bay Church
plan to continue this special offering. They
have decided it will certainly be necessary
to bring in a larger bank.
The goal remains; to make it possible
for children and others to own a Bible.
Congratulations on a job well done
Hervey Bay Primary/Junior Sabbath
school class. Congratulations Hervey
Bay Church for supporting and assisting
their young people in this missionary
endeavour.
Youth Day—a
day which saw
some of our Rockhampton
Youth
go out into the
participate in acts
of kindness. In the
morning, small
groups went
to celebrate Sabbath school and church
with them. The groups enjoyed a morning
Take Our Word For It, His
Word Is The Last Word
On Everything!
Preaching is one of the unique Spiritual
gifts God has given to the church
through some of its members. South
Queensland Conference’s main emphasis
for this year is to focus on Growing
Healthy Churches. Part of this includes
equipping and empowering leaders
through training. Training that will not
only teach how to FISH for the people,
but also how to FEED the flock through
the preaching and sharing of His Word.
Recently, five new lay preachers from
Springwood Samoan Seventh-day Adventist
Church completed a two-week intensive
training course of how to preach
the Word with integrity.
The church is also currently undertaking
Leadership Training in all areas of
ministry and church-life. Key leaders in
the church continue to provide strong
and keen support for the program, they
love every session. It is during these
training sessions that attendees are given
ample opportunity to discuss church leadership
and ministry issues which often
are considered inappropriate to discuss
at church on Sabbath. These sessions
provide a safe place to dialogue and discuss
and grow together as leaders and
as a church.
Pastor Dana Howard, Youth Director
for the Northern Australian Conference,
led his nephew, Caleb Dorrington,
youngest son of Peter and Narelle, into
the cool waters of Logan’s Inlet, Wivenhoe
Dam, when Caleb made a public
confession of his desire to consecrate his
young life to the Master. The large crowd
of family and friends–some of whom had
travelled great distances to honour the
event,—showed the high esteem in which
Caleb and his family are held. All are
members of the Esk Church.
A Spring In The Step at
Springwood Church!
Sarah Pitman
had never
heard of “Big
Camps” but
was invited by
a friend last
year to attend
our Watson
Park “Big Camp” convention. There she felt
convicted to know more about God. At the
last baptism service held at Springwood
Church, she decided to fill in a card indicating
she would be interested in taking
Bible studies. Since that time she has been
taking studies with one of Springwood’s
assistant pastors, Kara Dale.
Sarah has accepted Jesus Christ as
her personal Saviour and has set the
date of her baptism April 27 God bless,
Sarah!
Sam
Talei grew
up in an
Adventist
home in
Fiji, but
was soon
attracted
to the
things of the world. He is so happy to
have found the Lord again and he now
counts Springwood Seventh-day
Adventist Church as his spiritual home.
Charmaine Talei went to Fiji for two
months of work. One day as she was
carrying her heavy travel bags, she
heard a Fijian voice behind her saying
something she didn’t understand. She
didn’t think it was directed at her, so
she kept walking and the voice called
out again. It was a stranger named
Samuela, asking her if she wanted help
with her bags. She did. She extended
her stay in Fiji from two months to 12
months, and now they are happily
married. Charmaine grew up in a
Christian home, but is so excited that
she has found the Adventist church and
its emphasis on the Bible and the
Sabbath. Sam and Charmaine have
been studying with Rob and Sue Belosev
and will also be baptised in special
combined service on April 27.
About
six to eight
months
ago, Sam
and Selena
Atoera rang
Pastor Travis
and asked if they could do Bible studies
with him. Travis met with them at church
the following week and suggested that
instead of doing studies with a pastor,
perhaps they could join in with Sam and
Charmaine Talei as they were about to
begin their Bible studies at Rob and Sue
Belosev’s place.
That’s precisely what happened, and
these two couples have become very
good friends. Sam and Selena knew
about church when they were younger
(in fact Sam’s dad was the head elder
in the first church that Pastor Travis was
a pastor of!), but they never really made
a commitment to Jesus or the church and
strayed away. Now they are so glad
that they have found Jesus, and on April
27 they will demonstrate their love for
Him by being baptised.
And He Sent Them Out. . .
Seventeen senior students from Years
Ten to Twelve have signed up for the
Brisbane Adventist College (BAC) Sonship
Mission trip this year. The students will
be travelling to Batuna in the Solomon Islands
during the mid-year holiday. While
at Batuna, the team plans to refurbish one
of the dormitories there that is in desperate
need of attention. The BAC students
plan to paint the interior of the dormitory.
“It is a big job,” notes Mr Jackson, the
trip leader. “Our experience from previous
trips is that a coat of paint makes a
huge difference and that the local community
is very grateful for the work done
by our students.”
The team is seeking donations of equipment
to complete their project. Equipment
needed includes; water-based paint,
sand paper, paint-rollers, sugar soap,
paintbrushes and silicon. Equipment,
or monetary donations to purchase the
equipment can be sent to Mr Jackson at
Brisbane Adventist College.
A Clean Sweep. . .
Unlikely athletics aged
champion
Anika Allan has
battled juvenile polyarthritis
since the
age of two, causing
her such pain that
she has had trouble
sleeping and
walking since she
was a toddler and
has undergone a
battery of medical
procedures.
“It used be called Stills disease because
they couldn’t move basically,” Mrs Allan
said. “Before one sports carnival, I even
prepped up one of the teachers and said,
‘Can she have a special job of holding
the tape at the end or something’ Instead
Anika competed and won. I couldn’t
believe it, she won the cross country at
school and the 200m and 100m sprints.”
Today, thanks to a new treatment regimen
and the ongoing support from Arthritis
Queensland, she is Brisbane Adventist
College’s athletics aged champion.
“She’s so determined. For her to have
this condition, she’s done so well and I’m
so proud of her because of what she’s
been through since a very young age.”
(Mrs Allan is the daughter of Lynley
and Malcolm Potts, Anika is their lovely
granddaughter)
About It
The Brisbane Adventist College Year 11
Religion and Ethics class recently became
the hands and feet of Jesus when they
headed to Broadwater Park on Friday,
March 1, in order to take on the “Clean
Up Australia Day” challenge. The team divided
into groups and then scattered into
the urban jungle (quite literally). Nature
offered some nasties to all involved: mud,
prickly bushes and squadrons of mosquitoes,
but the intrepid workers were not
to be deterred. No-one entirely escaped
the mud, the scratches or the annoying
mozzie bites, but the result. . . a spotless
park! Jessica La, a Year 11 student related
afterwards, “We made a difference
in the community that rainy Friday!”
Northpine Christian College again
supported the Leukaemia Foundation’s
Shave For A Cure during the week
leading up to Easter. A selection of
students agreed to have their locks lopped
and still others coloured their hair in
support for the cause. One of the six
brave students who chose to shave their
heads was from the Junior school,
Jermaine McKain. Jermaine, who is
currently in Year 5, obtained special
permission from his parents to shave on
the day and his Nan came to watch the
A photograph of our Coral Coast Prep
students was featured in the March 25
special edition of the Bundaberg News-
Mail. The paper proved to be a great
souvenir for the students’ mums, dads,
grandparents, aunts and uncles. Congratulations
go to our Coral Coast school for
continuing to make themselves heard in
their local community.
Go The Years
Some may ask, “Who or what is the South Queensland Conference
Adventist Heritage Centre” A good question, worthy of a good
answer!
The intentions of the South Queensland Conference Adventist Heritage
Centre is to preserve the rich history of the Adventist Church
in Queensland since its beginnings during the 1890s through to current
times. The Heritage Committee is committed to locating and storing
all forms of historical material; telling the story of the Conference
through written reports, articles, and accounts of events, people, and
institutions; and making historical data available to church members,
institutions and the general public.
The Heritage committee realises the importance of preserving the
memory of past events and the people who made them happen. They
appreciate that the future of the Adventist Church in Queensland is
based on a belief in the guidance of God in the past and present.
Although in its infancy, the Heritage Centre is intended to assist
those who seek general information about the church. It also wishes
to aid and support the serious researcher.
The Heritage committee has the pleasure of announcing the Heritage
Webpage, a site that offers material of interest to both young and old.
The webpage’s address is;
http://sqheritage.adventist.org.au/
Alternatively, the site can be accessed by logging onto the South
Queensland Website (http://sq.adventist.org.au/ ) and then by clicking
on its “Resource” tab.
If you feel you have something that may be worthy to contribute to
the Heritage website: please contact its administrators via the “Contact
Us” tab on the site’s homepage.
