AROUND THE SCHOOLS Brisbane Adventist College And He Sent Them Out. . . Seventeen senior students from Years Ten to Twelve have signed up for the Brisbane Adventist College (BAC) Sonship Mission trip this year. The students will be travelling to Batuna in the Solomon Islands during the mid-year holiday. While at Batuna, the team plans to refurbish one of the dormitories there that is in desperate need of attention. The BAC students plan to paint the interior of the dormitory. “It is a big job,” notes Mr Jackson, the trip leader. “Our experience from previous trips is that a coat of paint makes a huge difference and that the local community is very grateful for the work done by our students.” The team is seeking donations of equipment to complete their project. Equipment needed includes; water-based paint, sand paper, paint-rollers, sugar soap, paintbrushes and silicon. Equipment, or monetary donations to purchase the equipment can be sent to Mr Jackson at Brisbane Adventist College. A Clean Sweep. . . Unlikely athletics aged champion Anika Allan has battled juvenile polyarthritis since the age of two, causing her such pain that she has had trouble sleeping and walking since she was a toddler and has undergone a battery of medical procedures. “It used be called Stills disease because they couldn’t move basically,” Mrs Allan said. “Before one sports carnival, I even prepped up one of the teachers and said, ‘Can she have a special job of holding the tape at the end or something’ Instead Anika competed and won. I couldn’t believe it, she won the cross country at school and the 200m and 100m sprints.” Today, thanks to a new treatment regimen and the ongoing support from Arthritis Queensland, she is Brisbane Adventist College’s athletics aged champion. “She’s so determined. For her to have this condition, she’s done so well and I’m so proud of her because of what she’s been through since a very young age.” (Mrs Allan is the daughter of Lynley and Malcolm Potts, Anika is their lovely granddaughter) —Article; Harry Brumpton, Wynnum Herald (From:Quest Newspapers April 10, 2013) Northpine Christian College That Was a Close Shave! As per usual event. Jermaine has done a stirling job in fundraising and is currently collecting money from his pledges, which includes sizeable sponsorships from two luxury car dealerships. Breeana Figures It All Out Northpine Christian College Year 10 student Breeana Copeland attended the Artistic Roller Skating Oceania Championships in Sydney held between April 2 to 5. Breeana has been a keen skater for a number of years and is currently a member of our Australian team. Breeana competed against a raft of international skaters at the event, skaters from New Zealand, Japan and China. She trains around two hours a day but still manages to complete all her school tasks, including an extra class this year for Japanese! Well done, Breeana. Coral Coast Prep Extra, Extra, Read All About It The Brisbane Adventist College Year 11 Religion and Ethics class recently became the hands and feet of Jesus when they headed to Broadwater Park on Friday, March 1, in order to take on the “Clean Up Australia Day” challenge. The team divided into groups and then scattered into the urban jungle (quite literally). Nature offered some nasties to all involved: mud, prickly bushes and squadrons of mosquitoes, but the intrepid workers were not to be deterred. No-one entirely escaped the mud, the scratches or the annoying mozzie bites, but the result. . . a spotless park! Jessica La, a Year 11 student related afterwards, “We made a difference in the community that rainy Friday!” Northpine Christian College again supported the Leukaemia Foundation’s Shave For A Cure during the week leading up to Easter. A selection of students agreed to have their locks lopped and still others coloured their hair in support for the cause. One of the six brave students who chose to shave their heads was from the Junior school, Jermaine McKain. Jermaine, who is currently in Year 5, obtained special permission from his parents to shave on the day and his Nan came to watch the A photograph of our Coral Coast Prep students was featured in the March 25 special edition of the Bundaberg News- Mail. The paper proved to be a great souvenir for the students’ mums, dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
