OHANA; SEATTLE, WA
Ohana Idol
Luck of the Draw
Okay people, it is contest time!
But not the type of contest you are
used to!
Ohana in Belltown has had a
solid karaoke show running for about
eight years and it has become the place
to be on Sunday nights.
The owner of Ohana, Kyle
Yoshimura, has decided it is time to
shake things up. Kyle got together
with his bar staff and brainstormed
along with his host Aury Moore, of
KARR productions, about throwing
a contest that was different and fun.
What they came up with will prove to
be a fun-filled contest where everyone
is a winner just for participating!
Ohana Idol - Luck of the Draw
This contest will be a bit different.
Instead of singers coming in
to perform their signature, polished
tunes, Ohana Idol contestants
will be drawing their
song from a hat, right before
they perform it. There will be
three judges dedicated for the
each night, including a special
guest judge. Two of the
judges will be staff members
of the Ohana “family”. Due
to Seattle’s vast talent pool,
Ohana is lining up a handful
of local celebrities
to act as judges, including
Victor Mercado, an
American Idol contestant
who had a memorable performance on
season four!
How does it work Well, here is
the gist of the contest:
The eight-week Ohana Idol contest
will begin on Sunday, April 19,
2009. The Finals will be on Sunday,
June 14, where some lucky winner will
walk away with our Grand Prize!
The show starts at 9pm. Ohana
will only be taking ten contestants per
night. All contestants will draw a number
determining what order they will
be singing in. Right before performing,
they will be able to draw three songs
from the Ohana Idol Vase. They’ll decide
which of the three they want to sing,
and then it’s showtime!
Participants will be judged on
showmanship, audience response, and
song interpretation.
Be clear, this will NOT be a show
about talent. This is a contest solely
for the purpose of fun! Some singers
may not even know the song they
draw. That’s okay… the judges want
to see you have a good time and put
on a show for the crowd.
All contestants will receive
a T-shirt just for being
part of the fun. There will be
three (3) winners per night.
First place weekly winners
will walk away with a brand
new iPod Nano!
Those weekly winners
will return on June 14th for
a chance to win the Grand
Prize, still to be named.
Second and third place
winners will also receive
prizes.
Find yourself at Ohana in Belltown
every Sunday after April 19th by
9pm and join us, won’t you 2207 1st
Karaoke Corner
Continued from cover page
here and there over the past couple
of years. Some we love, some we're
not so sure of, but all in all, it's much
better than you'd expect in general.
Yama had the most amazing selection
of sushi we've ever seen. From the
Crouching Tiger, featuring tempura
prawn, avacado and cucumber, yes the
milder side, to the Black Widow, sporting
tempura soft shell crab, cucumber,
avacado, radish sprouts, red Tobiko
and spicy mayonnaise, a little spicier,
to the Gold Finger, highlighting
crab, savory tamago and black truffle
caviar, dusted with sesame seeds and
yes, edible 23k gold foil (wild!). You're
sure to find something wonderful to
please your palette. We tried several
sushi's since we got there at 10pm, just
in time for late-night half price happy
hour Fridays and Saturdays (10pm-
Midnight). One of Rocky's favorites,
the Enter the Dragon, consisted of
shrimp tempura, crab with Eel and
avacado outside. I was pleasantly
surprised at how tasty this one was,
though the Eel had me worried there
for a moment.
Yama also serves "East Meets
West" cuisine, with some of the most
creative dishes we've seen anywhere
to date and everything we ordered
was absolutely delicious. We honestly
can't say enough about the food, it was
sincerely gourmet.
As far as the karaoke goes, the
set-up was super crisp, the stage
classy, as is Yama itself, and the
sound... fantastic! Sandra Dee really
knows how to do it right, playing the
most up to date dance music, drawing
in folks from all over the restaurant
and keeping them entertained the entire
night. Highlighting birthdays and
special occasions, Sandra Dee really
makes everyone feel right at home in
this upscale setting.
We also had the distinct pleasure
of sitting down with the manager,
Glenn, who informed us that he was
working hard at making Yama a true
"Destination" spot. Yama incorporated
fine dining with great entertainment.
