Call for Nominations
Dear TCS Member:
TWO WEEKS LEFT TO THE OCTOBER 14 DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS
The Coastal Society wishes to announce a call for nominations to the Board of
Directors. The Fall 2011 Election slate will include:
Directors – three (3) positions to be filled for three-year terms beginning
January 1, 2012 and ending on December 31, 2014.
Specific Functions of the Director Position Include:
Role: The role of a director is to serve as a voting member of the TCS Board.
A director will be knowledgeable about TCS, its mission and bylaws, and
committed to maintaining a strong organization that is responsive to the
membership.
Function: It is essential that nominees be willing and able to fulfill the
following functions of a Board member. Because most of TCS business is
conducted during traditional business hours (8:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday-
Friday), it is strongly encouraged that nominees obtain prior approval from
employers.
1. Attend at least three out of four of the quarterly Board meetings. (typically
one in-person meeting per year, remainder on conference calls)
2. Conducting, managing, and controlling the business of TCS through the
adoption of programs and policies.
3. Acting on the reports of committees, task forces, regional chapters and
others responsible to the Board.
4. Actively serving on at least one TCS Committee.
5. Participating in fundraising efforts.
6. Actively recruiting new members annually and/or an organizational
member.
7. Being continually sensitive to the needs of members and be willing to bring
those needs to the attention of the full Board.
8. Evaluating the job performance of the executive director on an annual
basis.
9. Reviewing the contracts of outside vendors (e.g., TCS Bulletin Editor-in-

Chief) on an annual basis.
10. Carrying out responsibilities as requested at all Board meetings, TCS
conferences, and other special meetings.
11. Serving as an advocate for TCS with other organizations, associations,
institutions, and at conferences and meetings.
12. Writing or soliciting at least one article yearly for the TCS Bulletin.
Criteria for Nomination Include:
1. Maintain TCS membership in good standing (if not a current member, a
nominee is eligible to join the Board as a new member of TCS); and
2. Show an interest and commitment to TCS.
As a volunteer-oriented organization, TCS values representation of a variety
of skills, experience, and interest levels on the Board. Considering the roles
and contributions of departing Board members and the current and emerging
needs of the organization, it would be useful to have Board members who can
each represent at least one of the following attributes or experiences, and
preferably more than one:
• Board service or executive level staff of an organization with similar mission
and goals
• Project management
• Business development
• Communications/PR
• Leadership development and training
• Finance
• Fundraising (including understanding of funder interest in emerging coastal
management trends)
• Human resources (career searching, resume and interview guidance)•
Legal
• Strategic planning
• Web, social media, or digital marketing experience
• Chapter-level experience in TCS or similar organizations
• Experience in member outreach, growth, and retention
In addition, TCS would like to ensure that the Board's composition is balanced
and strengthened by differences among members regarding race, gender,
age, professional and institutional disciplines, size of their organizations,
geographical regions, and philosophies about the profession and its practice
areas.

Term of Office:
Directors are elected to serve on the TCS Board for three years. Thus, the
newly elected directors would serve from January 1, 2012- December 31,
2014.
Financial Commitment:
While Board members are not expected to make financial contributions to
TCS, financial assistance is unfortunately not available for participation on the
all-volunteer Board. Directors who are not able to include TCS activities under
their organization’s budget commit to serve in a volunteer capacity and agree
to fund any costs (e.g., travel to meetings) out-of-pocket.
Nominations Process:
The Nominations Committee consists of Jeff Benoit, Past President; Lisa
Schiavinato, President; and Kate Killerlain Morrison, President-Elect. The
Nominations Committee will receive the recommended nominations from TCS
Executive Director Judy Tucker and develop a slate of
candidates. Nominations will close on October 14, 2011. The ballot will be
distributed in November, and the results of the election declared in December.
TCS members may nominate another TCS member or self-nominate.
Nominations should be sent via e-mail, mail or fax to the TCS Office (which
will be forwarded to the Nominations Committee). Include name, address,
telephone and email address of each nominee, and the reason you are
nominating that person. You may nominate more than one person per director
seat. Please state whether or not you have asked that person if s/he would be
willing to run for election. You don't have to ask them, but it helps to gauge
interest.
