Parish News
August 14th 2011
OUR PARISH MOTTO: “CHRIST THE KING PARISH — A FAMILY OF FAMILIES”
Monday 15 th August is the Feast of the Assumption
(Patroness of our diocese) and a Holy day of Obligation.
Masses on Monday will be at 10a.m. and 7.30p.m.
Our Parish
- A Family of Families - Working Together:
In every family there are tons of jobs that need to be done to the
unit functioning properly and each of the members needs to play
their part.. In every family different members fulfil different
functions so too with our Parish. Each week for the next we will run
a short series on the individual components of our Parish, outlining
their function and describing how they work.
Distribution of Holy Communion at Mass.
At the last supper when Jesus was at supper with his disciples he took bread,
blessed it, gave thanks, passed it around to those who were at table with him and
said “This is my Body/Blood … Do this often in memory of me”. Jesus invited all
present to participate in the sacred meal.
At that first Mass there were only 12 people present and there was no problem
passing the Bread and Cup around — (probably one bowl for each half of the table).
At our Masses we may have six or seven hundred people and the passing around of
the Bread needs to be properly organised and help with the serving is needed -
otherwise the meal would take all day. People generally distribute Holy Communion
at a rate of 15 to 20 per minute and if a priest alone was doing it would take him 25 to
30 minutes on an average Sunday. (Imagine a buffet for 500 guests with only one
person serving). Thus we ask specific members of the family that is our parish to help
with this particular aspect of the meal.
In this parish we have a great group of approximately 60 “Eucharistic
Ministers” who help with serving the Bread (and the Cup) and thus enable the
community to be fed with heavenly food in a dignified and timely manner. We
appreciate it does take an effort to get up from your seat and help and today I say a
big “Thank You” all those who help in this church with Holy Communion.
Dear Fellow Traveller,
I received the following acknowledgement during the week:
Very Rev Gerard Jennings PP
Salthill
Co Galway
11 August 2011
Dear Fr. Jennings ,
On behalf of Tr6caire, I would like to thank you and your parishioners
for your generous donation of €33,500 in response to our East Africa emergency
appeal. The support of Salthill (Christ The King) Parish has helped to bring
vital assistance to families affected by potentially the worst drought since 1950.
It is estimated that up to 13 million people face life threatening food and
water shortages in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya. As Tr6caire is already
working in the region we are able to respond quickly through our local partners,
and have dedicated more resources to this area to help families survive this
crisis.
In the worst drought-affected areas Tr6caire will provide drought
resistant seed and livestock. A scheme will also be run to move animals to
locations that still have sufficient grazing, preventing them from succumbing to
the drought, and protecting the livelihoods of families that rely on them.
Tr6caire, as a member of the Caritas Intemationalis network, will also be
involved in projects to provide families with an immediate water supply and to
develop water harvesting infrastructure so communities can retain water when
the short rains arrive later this year .
Thank you, once again, for your loyal support and for helping to ensure
that the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world are not forgotten.
Yours sincerely,
Justin Kilcullen .
Director, Trocaire.
Well Done everybody, - Working together we can achieve a lot !.
Have a good week,
