DRESS CODE
University Liggett School believes that standards of neatness and appropriateness in
clothing encourage an atmosphere conducive to learning, work and discipline. Fashions
designed for leisure-time activities are not appropriate. The dress code also applies to
field trips during school days. Regular dress code is appropriate for students attending
evening performances and programs at the school; it is a simple courtesy to the
performers.
Appropriateness in dress is ultimately at the discretion of the administration. Any
faculty member may question whether attire is acceptable and reflects the intent of the
dress standard, even if it conforms to the technicalities of the dress code.
If a student arrives for school out of dress code, he or she will be sent to the dean of
students for a review of the dress code policy. For a second offense, a student will need
to remain in the office until he or she can acquire the appropriate clothing. Any class
missed for this reason will be considered an unexcused absence.
Form-fitting clothing, denim and clothing that is either too big or too small is
unacceptable.
Acceptable attire for girls:
A dress, dress slacks or skirt with a blouse, dress shirt, turtleneck or sweater. Skirts and
dresses must be at or below the knee when standing. Shirts which are not fitted must be
tucked in. The shirt and skirt/pants must cover the midriff completely at all times.
Acceptable attire for boys:
Dress slacks accompanied by a collared shirt and tie, a sweater, or a turtleneck. Ties
must be tied. Shirts must be tucked in (not rolled up).
Shoes must be well-fitting dress shoes that are in good repair, safe and appropriate for
school. Students may want to keep a sweater or a pair of appropriate shoes in their
locker for days when the weather is cooler or boots need to be worn to school. Shorts are
only permitted in the first and fourth quarters. Pants and shorts with belt loops must be
accompanied by a belt. Students are permitted to wear Bermuda-style shorts during the
first and fourth quarters.

Exceptions:
Free Dress Days: These are approved by the student council and the administration and
publicized in the daily announcements. Students may not wear items which promote
alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or are of a sexually graphic or suggestive nature.
On Free Dress days, please keep in mind:
All clothing must be clean, neat and in good repair. Torn and ripped clothes are
not allowed.
Pants: Jeans in good repair may be worn. Capri pants are also acceptable.
Sweatpants, yoga pants, and athletic pants are allowed.
Tops with appropriate and non-offensive writing are acceptable. Shoulders must
be covered.
Bare mid-riffs are not allowed.
Shoes must be worn. Sandals are acceptable.
Team Gear: Athletic team members are permitted to wear team jerseys on the day of
home games and state tournaments, provided the entire team participates. No dress
shirt is required under the jersey. The Players and Robotics team members will wear
their show shirts on performance days. In all other respects, students must conform to
the dress code on these days.
Better than Dress Code: On some days designated by the school, students may be
required to dress more formally. On these days, boys are required to wear dress slacks,
dress shoes, a sport coat and tie. Girls should wear a dress, suit, or skirt and blouse.
Skirts and dresses must be at or below the knee.
