y Dr. Nilu Christmas can be a difficult time of year to look great. That summer glow has faded, the winter chills give you sniffles and that extra mince pie proves difficult to resist. Fear not, there are a few simple tricks that you can employ over the festive period to make sure you look and feel great. And looking great is important! Studies have show that your skin and how healthy it looks is a good indication of your internal health. It's also an important source of health as your skin produces Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight during summer but it’s difficult to consume enough Vitamin D through diet alone during winter. Between September and March the sun doesn’t rise high enough to stimulate vitamin D production in your skin, so the only way to absorb enough Vitamin D during the winter months is to take supplements. Current UK guidelines suggest that adults under 65 should take 1,000IU of Vitamin D a day. However to maintain healthy Vitamin D levels some studies suggest higher doses than this. Diet is tricky over Christmas and New Years as well. Food is usually part of the festivities and I wouldn't say avoid tasty treats altogether - it’s difficult to look good when you’re miserable. A good rule to follow is the 80/20 rule. This means eat well 80% of the time - make four out of five meals healthy meals. But what's healthy If you watch the news or read papers you may be shocked when I explain that I believe a diet high in good fats, protein and fresh fruit and vegetables is not only good for your health but also helps you to look great. Interestingly studies have show that eating fruit and vegetables improves your skin colouration in a way that actually makes you look more attractive and that eating green and yellow vegetables may actually decrease your wrinkles. Importantly, protein for breakfast is not only better for you than any cereals or toast it also helps stabilise your appetite. Avoiding high GI foods also reduces acne and blemishes and reduce the production of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) that cross link collagen and elastin. These reduce your skin’s volume and it’s ability to prevent wrinkles forming. For a sweet treat 85% dark chocolate is a good compromise as it contains plenty of antioxidants to reduce low-level inflammation. Also try xylitol as a sweetener, it’s a prebiotic and studies have also shown it actually stimulates collagen production. Try to avoid bad fats including, margarine, trans-fats, vegetable oils, and hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats. Lard has had a bad press over the past twenty years or so, but new thinking suggests it isn’t actually that bad. For a start it is high in Vitamin D, one of the few foods that is, and it has a high content of monounsaturated fat (48%!). Increased fat consumption increases the elasticity of your skin and reduces wrinkles. Sufficient levels of both good fats in our diets are essential for maintaining healthy and youthful looking skin. These also include palm oil and avocado oil. It goes without saying that sugary foods and fizzy drinks should be avoided. But it’s Christmas I hear you say! Indeed and it’s going to be difficult, so try to stick to that 80/20 rule but you will find it makes a big difference.
