This month, we went to the Streatham Theatre
Company’s performance “Access All Eras”, a
night time tour of the Streatham Hill Theatre
based on the star-studded history of this
spectacular 1928 building. Well-informed
guides led us down abandoned corridors,
and as we peeked behind closed doors, the
company told the story of a Theatre Manager’s
tragic romance with an actress. They used
an old manager’s office, a dressing-room,
backstage, and the atmospheric basement bar
to unfold the tale.” This was a brilliant sitespecific
piece that made great use of the wealth
of opportunity presented by this marvellous old
theatre. More please! www.streathamtheatre.
Last month we got involved with the Streatham
Festival 2015 Board, and I have also been
elected to chair Streatham Action. Want a
better Streatham or got something to suggest
for the 2015 Festival
Let us know!
We wrote about flytipping
earlier this year,
and now Lambeth
Council’s Scrutiny
Committee will be
placing the “Envirocrime”
officers under
the microscope in a
public meeting on the
11th at the Streatham
Tate Centre at the library. Come and hear what
they’ve been doing about environmental abuse.
The most impressive and moving event of the
month was the Remembrance Service at the
War Memorial, attended by around 800 people.
We will remember them.
Merry Christmas, Streatham!
We thought aliens had finally landed! We were
sure that there was an enormous UFO parked
on the High Road near the War Memorial
in November, but when we went to look,
someone had taken down the normal poster
hoardings on the junction between
Lewin and Natal Roads and put
up a giant LED TV-like ad board
bathing South Streatham in
light. Bright light. It can be
seen from Crown Point and
the western edges of West
Norwood! The residents of the
Albert Carr Gardens must think
its daytime all the time.
Concerned residents who
contacted us about this site
have seen no planning notices or
announcements about the change to the
site. This is interesting, as its inside the
Streatham Common Conservation area, and
with similar constraints on shops the length
of the High Road, it seems to have been
shoved through the planning process without
proper consultation. Neither Streatham Action
nor the Friends of Streatham Common,
the inStreatham BID or SCCoop had been
consulted (although Friends of Unigate
Woods had been!). Public
expressions on social media have
been universally negative if not
downright hostile.
Ironically, these hoardings
seem to contradict Lambeth
council's own conservation
area rules and Lambeth Local
Plan policies. In light of this we
want to ask why exactly the council
appears to have ignored its own
rules, steamrollered process, and granted
permission to a giant multinational to spoil our
amenities at no benefit to the community. We
call on Lambeth to repeal planning permission
on this dazzling eyesore!
On a cold Monday evening there's no better
refuge than the HIDEAWAY Jazz Club with its
cool but cosy decor, attentive staff and hearty
menu - we can personally vouch that their
Rioja and sweet potato fries are a winning
combination!
As part of HIDEAWAY's 5th annual EFG
London Jazz Festival series, our evening's
entertainment was a break from routine for the
HIDEAWAY, which usually hosts a salsa class,
a walk-in jazz workshop and jam session on
Mondays. Instead there were two vibrant jazz
groups, both hailing from South London: The
Expansions and The Hot Border Specials.
The gig kicked off with 4 piece funk band The
Expansions who crammed their 40 minute
set with a range of 70's infused synthy tunes.
Shea Matthews as guest singer with Eryka
Badu-esque vocals came on and brought a
new, mellow vibe to the band's sound. In an
evening that was almost entirely instrumental,
it was great to hear some silky smooth vocals
take centre stage. Next to delight our ears
was a The Hot Border Specials, who got
us dancing in our seats with their energetic
bongo drums. We particularly enjoyed their
percussion-laced Michael Jackson 'Thriller'
rendition. With their arresting energy it was
hard to sit still, and come the end of the set
(and an extra glass or two of Rioja) we were up
on our feet dancing with the band's entourage.
All in all a superb Monday evening's
entertainment, even if we were a little worse
for wear come Tuesday morning's alarm!
Could you spare a plate of food
Call for community food project for the
elderly in Lambeth
A group of Streatham mums is getting
behind a campaign to help combat
loneliness amongst elderly
people in the borough.
Casserole Club helps people
share extra portions of home
cooked food with others in
their area who are not always
able to cook for themselves.
The project is already helping
bring together communities in
other London boroughs but is not
yet supported by Lambeth.
“I’d love to help somebody in this way”,
said local mum of two Hattie Lambrou.
And judging by the reaction she had on
Streatham Mums Network’s Facebook page
when she posted about this, it would seem that
a lot of other people would be willing too.
“Cooking a meal for somebody is such a
simple gesture but can bring a lot
of happiness”, she said. “But
Casserole would need the
backing of Lambeth Council.
And to get that it would really
help if we can prove there
are enough people willing to
cook for someone.”
Anyone keen to get
involved can read more
and importantly, sign up.
For more information, get in
touch with the casserole club at
hello@casseroleclub.com or you can
give them a call on 020 3475 3444 www.
casseroleclub.com “The more people that
sign up, the more chance we have of bringing
Casserole here.”
We wish all our customers a
very Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year.
On December 13th & 14th, Streatham Ice and
Leisure Centre will be hosting its first Christmas
Ice skating show, West End Winter Wonderland.
The show will include many talented
nationally ranked skaters who
train at the rink, as well as guest
skaters including Free Skater
Harriet Beatson and team
GB Junior Ice Dance skating
couple Charlotte Dyson &
Rory Ross-Docherty. The
Streatham ice coaching
team’s own Roland Horsall,
former principal performer with
the International Holiday on Ice
Company, will host the evening.
The show will be opened on Saturday
13th December by Lambeth Council Leader,
Lib Peck, with Councillor Jane Edbrooke
welcoming the audience on the 14th. Councillor
Peck said “Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre is
fantastic and I am delighted that over 400,000
people have already used it in its first year… I
am looking forward to seeing some wonderful
displays from our very own Streatham-trained
skaters." It is sure to be a fantastic family night
out!
PETER NICHOL
ALEXANDRA
SNOWDON
The West End Winter Wonderland
show includes local young talent
who train regularly at the Streatham
Ice and Leisure Centre.
Jessica Marjot at
just 14 is the solo
ice dance British Senior
Ladies Champion and gold
medallist and attends Harris
Academy in Purley. Seven
year old Alexandra Snowdon
is the youngest skater ever
to compete at the British
Championships. Alexandra
attends Ecole de Battersea Prep
School, and joined the National Ice
Skating Association’s development
squad when she was only 6 (their youngest
ever member). She won a silver medal at the
Streatham Solo Ice Dance IJS Competition in
May, and now skates with partner Peter Nicholl
(12). He and his sister Nathalie were crowned
Welsh Champions this year, and are also
members of the National Development Squad.
Peter has won 6 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze
medals, and Nathalie 3 gold, 4 silver and 2
bronze medals this season. Nathalie dances
with Theodore Alexander, 12, who also had an
impressive medal haul. Also performing is Rosie
Hope, 11, a pupil at James Allen’s Girls School
who is also in the national development squad
and has won 6 silver medals and a bronze this
season.
These are very committed young skaters who
are on the ice in Streatham by 6am most days
of the week before school, and then again
at weekends, as well as doing several hours
off-ice training a week. Most of the skaters in
the Christmas show are part of the Streatham
Supremes, the largest of the figure skating
clubs at the Streatham rink under Head Coach,
Diane Towler-Green MBE, Olympian and four
time British, European and World Champion
with her partner Bernard Ford.
The club's coaches have produced numerous
British champions over the years, and have
20
many specialities from choreography to
technical expertise. Diane Towler-Green’s
daughters, Candice and Philippa are also
world-class coaches at the Streatham Ice
Centre. Candice is an IJS technical specialist,
and is the producer of the West End Winter
Wonderland show. She is a former British
junior ice dance champion and World Junior
Championship competitor, while Philippa is a
four-time British silver medallist and European
and World Championship competitor as well as
a very talented choreographer.
Streatham hosted its first national IJS skating
competition in May, attracting competitors from
all over the UK. It was such a success that the
21st and 22nd May 2015 have been pencilled
in for a second Streatham Open competition.
There have even be rumours that NISA are
considering holding the British Championships
there in the future, as well as a possible
International skating Grand Prix.
Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre is managed
by Greenwich Leisure Ltd under the Better
Leisure brand. They have worked hard to
improve the services and facilities available
and support the ice management team in
hosting competitions and putting on the
Christmas West End Winter Wonderland. “We
are very fortunate to have such a talented
team of coaches who have worked extremely
hard to produce such excellent results in the
competitions this year.
We hope as many people
As far as is known Charles Dickens never
visited Streatham, but our town has a
number of links with him. Edwin Durrant, of
70 Penwortham Road, purchased the lease
of the Old Curiosity Shop in Portugal Street
around the turn of the 20th century, and under
his ownership it traded as a curio shop. Many
old pictures of the premises clearly show
the Durrant family name above the door.
Bleak House in Broadstairs, where Dickens
used to holiday, was purchased in 1953 by
Mrs M.E.Scholeboom, of Prentis Road. She
described the house as ‘magnificent’, standing
in an acre of ground overlooking the sea and
comprising some 15 rooms. Sir Arthur Helps,
another resident of Streatham parish and who is
buried in St. Leonard’s graveyard, was secretary
of the Privy Council and introduced Queen
Victoria to Dickens in 1870. Another Streatham
resident worthy of mention is Bertram
Waldron Matz of 29 Woodfield Avenue was
acknowledged as the world’s greatest authority
on Charles Dickens. In his youth he worked
for Dickens’ publishers, Chapman and Hall,
and later became a partner in the publishing
business of Charles Palmer of Chandos Street.
A prolific author on Dickens, he founded the
Dickens Fellowship in 1902 and was its first
honorary secretary and later president. For over
20 years he was the editor of the Dickensian,
wrote at least 11 books on Dickens related
subjects.
Although Dickens appears to have never visited
Streatham, his son came to the town in March
1889 to read from his father’s works in the
Streatham Town Hall. A report in the Norwood
Review and Crystal Palace Reporter on 9th
March 1889, recalls the events of the evening
with the headline: “MR CHARLES DICKENS AT
STREATHAM"
PAISLEy RAINbELL (RIGHT)
Ho! Ho! Ho! It’s that time of year again, but is it
as much fun for our furry friends Here are a
few things to consider for safe and happy times
for them.
There are foods we love that are poisonous to
dogs and cats – chocolate, onions, garlic, nuts,
blue cheese, anything with grapes, sultanas,
or raisins (Christmas pud, mince pies and
cake), and turkey bones as they can cause
constipation and damage intestines.
Tinsel and decorations can cause blockages
if swallowed, and lilies, holly, mistletoe and
poinsettia and artificial snow are all toxic. Cats
like to leap at sparkly things and can pull the
tree over and get tangled up, while puppies love
to chew electric cable!. Chewed batteries cause
chemical burns and heavy metal poisoning.
Watch out for anti-freeze too – it tastes yummy
to pets but is highly toxic. Wash those little
paws when they come in, as salt used on frozen
roads can irritate and be toxic if licked.
If your pet does ingest anything that you are not
sure about. Don’t hesitate, a few hours can be
the difference between life and death – call the
emergency vet on 020 8677 0976.
And Now…fanfare….
Known for years as the last school in Lambeth,
Woodmansterne Primary School and Children’s
Centre is just yards from where Croydon,
Merton and Wandsworth councils converge
in South Streatham. This is also the name of a
superb little book given me by Paul Robinson,
the Headteacher of Woodmansterne, which
details the memories and reminiscences of
Woodmansterne alumni stretching back
to the early 1930s.
Change at Woodmansterne
has always been the norm.
From the large Streatham Vale
neighbourhoods springing up to
demographic changes in the area
to the purpose of the school itself –
originally a school for children with chronic
illnesses such as tuberculosis – the school has
changed amazingly. This may be about to be
trumped by plans to extend the primary school
to a 4 form intake and ambitious plans to build
a secondary school on the existing site. In the
‘South Lambeth Schools’ Partnership’ area,
Woodmansterne has the best, if not the only,
space to do this. Given the distances many
children have to travel to secondary school this
would be a great boon for Streatham parents.
Amazingly Woodmansterne plans to do this on
the existing hard footprint and preserve all of
the existing, and wonderfully extensive, playing
fields.
Their Children’s Centre offers care from ages 0
– 5yrs old, breastfeeding counsellors, post-natal
midwifery support, and English language tuition.
The Centre’s teacher works closely with local
childminders and nurseries, helping ensure
that all children, whether advantaged,
disadvantaged, those who speak
English as a first or second language
or those with special educational
need and disabilities, have had the
best start - prepared to enter school.
The school itself is a diverse mix of
local children. The largest pupil group
is “White (Other)” at 19% of the intake with
the next 5 other groups split almost similarly
equal. Woodmansterne sees this as a feature.
When I asked about language lessons I found
that 59% of the school have English as an
additional language.
In spite of the challenges and the pace of
change, Woodmansterne has just been
inspected by Ofsted and rated Outstanding.
We congratulate Paul Robinson, his teachers
and support staff, governors and the parents of
Woodmansterne for this result!
Christmas can be a difficult time of year to
look great. That summer glow has faded, the
winter chills give you sniffles and that extra
mince pie proves difficult to resist. Fear not,
there are a few simple tricks that you can
employ over the festive period to make sure
you look and feel great. And looking great is
important!
Studies have show that your skin and how
healthy it looks is a good indication of your
internal health. It's also an important source
of health as your skin produces Vitamin D
through exposure to sunlight during summer
but it’s difficult to consume enough Vitamin D
through diet alone during winter.
Between September and March the
sun doesn’t rise high enough to
stimulate vitamin D production
in your skin, so the only way
to absorb enough Vitamin D
during the winter months is to
take supplements. Current UK
guidelines suggest that adults
under 65 should take 1,000IU
of Vitamin D a day. However to
maintain healthy Vitamin D levels
some studies suggest higher
doses than this.
Diet is tricky over Christmas and New
Years as well. Food is usually part of the
festivities and I wouldn't say avoid tasty treats
altogether - it’s difficult to look good when
you’re miserable. A good rule to follow is the
80/20 rule. This means eat well 80% of the
time - make four out of five meals healthy
meals. But what's healthy If you watch the
news or read papers you may be shocked
when I explain that I believe a diet high in good
fats, protein and fresh fruit and vegetables
is not only good for your health but also
helps you to look great. Interestingly studies
have show that eating fruit and vegetables
improves your skin colouration in a way that
actually makes you look more attractive and
that eating green and yellow vegetables may
actually decrease your wrinkles. Importantly,
protein for breakfast is not only better for you
than any cereals or toast it also helps stabilise
your appetite.
Avoiding high GI foods also reduces acne
and blemishes and reduce the production of
Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) that
cross link collagen and elastin. These reduce
your skin’s volume and it’s ability to prevent
wrinkles forming. For a sweet treat 85% dark
chocolate is a good compromise as it contains
plenty of antioxidants to reduce low-level
inflammation. Also try xylitol as a sweetener,
it’s a prebiotic and studies have also shown it
actually stimulates collagen production.
Try to avoid bad fats including, margarine,
trans-fats, vegetable oils, and hydrogenated
or partially hydrogenated fats. Lard has had
a bad press over the past twenty years or
so, but new thinking suggests it isn’t
actually that bad. For a start it is high
in Vitamin D, one of the few foods
that is, and it has a high content
of monounsaturated fat (48%!).
Increased fat consumption
increases the elasticity of your
skin and reduces wrinkles.
Sufficient levels of both good
fats in our diets are essential for
maintaining healthy and youthful
looking skin. These also include
palm oil and avocado oil.
It goes without saying that sugary foods
and fizzy drinks should be avoided. But
it’s Christmas I hear you say! Indeed and
it’s going to be difficult, so try to stick to
that 80/20 rule but you will find it makes
a big difference. See my website www.
brigstockskinandlaser.com for my Christmas
Chocolate Balls recipe. They’re made from
ground almonds, desiccated coconut, figs,
xylitol and cacao powder and are truly
delicious.
So there you go; there’s my guide to looking
great and having a healthy happy Christmas
and hopefully these tips will help you look
fantastic in the New Year.
