Bring On
the Clowns
once read a book, Dr. David
I Switzer that likened religion
to the clowns in a three ring
circus. His point was that
the circus is many different
acts in three different parts
of the Big Top, and the only
thing that ties them together
is the clowns. Our religious
life is that which weaves
itself through all parts of our
existence… home, work, play,
community, politics, and our
past, present, and future.
Thomas Moore points out that
the Latin root of religion is
ligare, which means to connect.
This is the same root word from which ligament, the
word describing that which ties together bones and muscles,
is derived. It is the same root from which ligature is derived,
which is a fancy word for any tool for tying things together...
In this sense, the Christian faith is indeed a religion, in that
through our faith we become connected to the God who
is the author of all meaning and all mystery, and are connected
in relationship with his Son Jesus Christ, in whom
we can discover abundant life. Through the religion of Jesus
Christ, we find ourselves bound together, tied to one another
in an entirely different way, as co-components of the body
of Christ, and brothers and sisters in the family of God. As
Paul says in Ephesians 4:16, the whole body, joined and held
together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself
up in love... How appropriate to use the word religion when
discussing our relationship with one another, because God
calls us to be connected in ways sometimes fulfilling, and
sometimes painful.
Are you a religious person I hope so. The only alternative
is to be alone, disconnected, which isn’t any good at all. So
let’s clown around a bit together.

Welcome Rev. Denham!
St. Luke’s welcomes Rev. Bill Denham as our new
pastor of Caring Ministries. A 1961 graduate of Lamar
High School, Bill is a graduate of the University of
Texas in Austin and received his Masters of Divinity
degree from Southern Methodist University in 2004.
He is currently in his third year of doctoral work at
the Houston Graduate School of Theology. Bill is an
Ordained Elder in Full Connection, having served
in the Texas Conference of the United Methodist
Church since June 2000.
He and his wife Laura have been married for forty
years and have three children.
His first Sunday at St. Luke’s will be June 24.

Breakdancing Ministry: is looking for volunteers
on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays to bring and
serve a simple meal and visit with these young dancers
from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Gethsemane Campus.

reVision – A Community of Empowerment
for at-risk gang affected youth is looking for volunteers to
assist with programming activities and serve as hosts for
youth and parents on Monday nights at the Gethsemane

KIDS HOPE USA is seeking mentors for

Welcome Janie
St. Luke’s is pleased to welcome Janie Gallagher as
our new full-time Human Resources Manager. Janie
has a strong background in HR roles, including an
M.S. in Labor Relations and Human Resources and
has worked at Dresser, Halliburton, Alcon Labs, and
Kellogg. When asked about her new position, Janie
said, “I am excited and honored to join the staff at
St. Luke’s. Everyone has been so very kind and
helpful, that it is truly a pleasure to come work. I
look forward to making HR an even stronger partner
to the church and school.”
Woodworkers Ministry: Looking for a way
to serve Consider joining the St. Luke’s Woodworkers
Ministry, a friendly group of men and women making
classic-style wooden toys for children at agencies and
orphanages, locally and abroad. These folks also repair
and build furniture, plus help with special projects for
many nonprofits. Across from the church on Edloe, the
Woodshop is equipped with all the modern tools to
build most anything from wood. Please contact Alice at

volunteering on Monday and Tuesday mornings.

Sondra Koenig, the newest member of St. Luke’s
Caring Connections team, comes to our staff with a
background in marketing and community relations.
She began working at St. Luke’s as a Connection
Center volunteer where her outgoing and friendly
nature made her a perfect fit for the position. Be
sure and drop by the Connection Center on a
Sunday morning and say hello.

Summer Clubhouse, at the Gethsemane
Campus, is a safe, educational and
spiritual place for children of the
Sharpstown and Gulfton area to come!
This is four fantastic weeks filled with
learning activities and fun adventures for
children going into kindergarten through
fifth grade.
July 9 - August 3,
9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday-Friday
Week 1
July 9-13
The Arts
(Psalm 150)
Children will experience art & crafts,
theater/drama, cooking, music, etc.
Week 2
July 16-20
Health & Fitness
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20 and Philippians
4:13) The children will focus on healthy
eating and living through sports, yoga,
exercise, and nutrition etc.
Week 3, July 23-27 - Tech/Science (1 Kings
4:29-34) Children will do science projects &
experiments; learn about sound, light,
digital and computer technology, and
more.
Week 4, July 30-August 3 - My World, Big
World Week (Philippians 2:13) Children
will focus on how they can contribute to
their home, school, community and world
each day through activities like:
manners, service projects, being a good
friend & neighbor, recycling, gardening,
etc.
The cost $10 per child, per week with a
$35 family maximum per week. There are
some scholarships available. While at the
Summer Clubhouse, the children will have
a morning snack and a nutritious lunch.
This fee also covers crafts, activities and
even a bus pick-up.
We could use help preparing ahead of
time like decorating or preparing crafts
AND during the program itself like preparing
snacks and lunches. If you would

Batting Cages

At reVision, we are always trying to come up
with new ideas for outings for our kids. Most
of them have never done anything before, so
everything we do is for them the “first time.” This
is what makes our outings so memorable, so
powerful. Tonight we took a group of reVision
kids to the batting cages. Only one of the kids
had ever even held a bat before.
Mr. C owns the batting cages, and made special
arrangements to let us have a two hour block.
When we first arrived we had the machine set
to baseball, and only two of our guys could hit
it. I suggested we switch to softball so everyone
could hit the ball, and so Mr. C switched the
machine for us. By this point, although the place
was full, Mr. C was watching our guys. He came
over and gave them some batting tips. The guys
were really into it. They were having a great time
trying to figure out how to hit the ball and encouraging
each other really strongly. It was sort
of amazing to watch. They started saying that
we should start a baseball or a softball team.
And so an idea began…
Mr. C is an amazing find. I credit the Holy Spirit
for introducing him to us. I spent some time
talking to him and he had figured out what
we were about before I even said anything.
He knew that our guys were gang involved.
He knew that we were trying to help them. He
knew that they had chosen to do this themselves.
No one told him this, he’s just been
around long enough and has been in enough
rough situations to know that. He is really interested
in what we are doing, and is motivated to
help us. He is going to ask around for leagues
that we might join that would be accepting of
our kids. He is going to try to find a coach who
might be interested in working with us (which
I’m thinking might actually be him). He wants to
come out to Gethsemane to look at our field. One of
his many jobs is making baseball fields, and has all the
equipment to make either a permanent or a temporary
field there.
Mr. C didn’t charge us anything for our time tonight.
The batting cages are normally billed in increments
of 15 minutes, and we were there for 2 hours. He said,
“This one’s on me.” He said he has been wanting to
help inner city kids for his whole life, and that he has
done what he can to do so at his facility. He told me
that the key to working with gang kids is just to treat
them with respect. He said he has had groups of gang
kids come in on their own, and that he simply treats
them “like you would anybody else” and that they have
come back and have never been any problem. He says
that he wants inner city kids to experience playing on
a team, to feel what it’s like to wear the uniform, to be
on the same side of a competition together. What an
incredible picture. Sounds a lot like God at work.

teaches couples at the Keeping Love Alive workshop how
to embrace conflicts by turning them into connections
without blame, shame or criticism. Event runs 9 a.m.-

Spring Swing Friday
Night Dance
The Dance is May 18, 7:30 – 10 p.m. and is in the
Fellowship Hall at the Westheimer Campus $15.

Dreamsicles playing swing and rock and roll. Come for

St. Luke’s Staff to be
ordained
St. Luke’s is pleased to announce that Alison
Gardner Young, Amy Bezecny, Laralee DeHart
and Kay Towns will be ordained at Annual
Conference this year. Alison will become an elder
in the Methodist Church and Amy and Laralee
will be ordained as deacons having finished
their provisional time and will be admitted as
full members of the Annual Conference. In addition,
Mireya Ottaviano will be appointed as a
local pastor, authorized to do pastoral ministry
at St. Luke’s Gethsemane Campus. All are invited
to attend the ordination service on Wednesday,
June 6 at 7 p.m. in the main hall of the
Galveston Convention Center.

New Caney resident, Judy Lackey is this month’s
featured artist in the Rotunda Gallery. Judy is a
painter who took up the brush after her kids were
grown, and has since earned hundreds of awards in
art competitions, including the prestigious Lone Star
Art Guild Award seven years in a row.
Over the years, Judy has studied with a number of
instructors and has been teaching art since 1984. Her
choice mediums include oils, pastels and watercolors,
and her work has been collected by patrons all over
the world.
Judy’s love of nature is quite evident in all of her
work. Her ability to depict the balance and harmony
that she sees in people and nature is truly amazing. As
one of her fans noted, “Judy lives and breathes beauty
through art. Her warm, loving and sensitive nature is
present in every piece.”
Stop by the Gallery this month to enjoy Judy’s
paintings. If you are interested in purchasing one of

stlukesmethodist.org. A portion of all sales goes to
support the Fine Arts Fund at St. Luke’s, which helps
maintain and add to our permanent art collection.
Join our Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) season
subscription group. We attend the matinee performance
on the final Sunday of each of the six
shows of the season, which begins in October.
