On behalf of the Afera Technical Committee, it gives me great pleasure to invite you
to already the 5th Afera College in Brussels. I’m looking forward to another successful
event.
Building upon the great success of the last 4 tape colleges Afera is hosting the Afera
Tape College again in 2012, as usual in the Marriott Hotel in Brussels. The structure
as well as the content of this biennial event offers anyone in the tape business
the chance to acquire or refresh basic technical knowledge of the self-adhesive
tape industry. You will experience a “going back to school” feeling, when industry
experts educate the basic principles of formulating, manufacturing, application and
testing of self-adhesive tapes.
Compared to the last events, some lectures have been replaced by new ones and the
speakers have updated their presentations based on the feedback they got from last
event’s questionnaire.
Apart from technical lectures, you will also be updated on the latest developments
on REACH and its possible consequences for you in your daily work life.
Based on the excellent feedback after the last colleges, we believe we have established
a popular technical learning event, which is unique for the European tape
industry. Afera continues its effort to add value to its membership by organizing
these types of events for its diverse membership base and other interested industry
professionals. Tuned to suit a growing audience of first time participants, the Tape
College program allows for a full two days of classroom activity and networking.
Thirteen lectures will cover a wide range of technical topics in relation to the PSA
Tape industry, from tape backings, to formulation chemistry and adhesive rheology
and from applying techniques to tape testing methods.
We trust that the program line up will appeal to you again, not only to the technical
community, but also to those of other disciplines, desiring technical knowledge
to support their work within the tape industry. We especially urge you to participate
actively in debate and questioning. This adds value to an event that wants
to promote a truly dynamic learning opportunity and that will yield positive and
continuing benefit to every participant.
This year we organized a table top exhibition where member companies will show
their latest products. All coffee and tea breaks will take place in the exhibition area
as well as the welcome cocktail. I take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors
who have contributed to this event. When you are interested to become a sponsor

This is an introductory lecture on pressure sensitive tape
products including definitions, purposes, properties,
construction, and tape engineering. Several principles of
physics and chemistry are summarized. Backings and
adhesives, including the theory of adhesives, as well as
application problems are included.

Coating Technology has developed in the recent years
dramatically into speed levels of above 1000 m/min. We
describe all common techniques like mayer bar, reverse
roll coaters, gravure and Vario gravure sytems as well
as curtain coating. Besides the coating technology it is
advisable to understand the coatability of the adhesive and
how to achieve the right adhesive formulation.
16.00 – 17.15 Chemistry of HMPSA formulations
Chrétien Donker – Eastman Chemical Middelburg B.V. (NL)
Chrétien Donker will give an overview of the chemistry
of tackifying resins used in the adhesive industry. This
includes hydrocarbon resins and rosin resins as well as
their modifications. Tools to characterize these type of
resins will be given, which make it easier for formulators
to choose the right resin for the right application. The interaction
and compatibility of tackifying resins with several
polymers will be discussed, where the focus will be on block
copolymers and their use in HMPSA formulations. And in
addition formulating tools and examples will be given.

08.30 – 09.15 An Introduction to Acrylic Pressure Sensitive Adhesives

An overview of acrylic technology for pressure sensitive
adhesives will be presented. The chemistry and polymerization
of solvent, water based, and 100% solid acrylic
polymers will be discussed, as well as a comparison of
performance features of these products versus other
PSA technologies. Formulating techniques and end use
applications of acrylic PSA’s will also be reviewed.

This lecture covers the various materials that are used
for backings(substrates) of PSA tapes. Backing types and
characteristics and their influence on tape properties are
discussed. As an example, the manufacture of BOPP film
from resin is presented. Additional sources of information
are also summarized.
10.30 – 11.15 Release Papers: Technical Substrates for PSA Tape
Applications Pascale Gouttenoire – Ahlstrom (I)
Release substrates are an extremely important component
of many self-adhesive tapes, materials and components.
Among numerous available alternatives, supercalendered
papers represent by far the most popular base used in silicon
coated release liner. Dr. Guagliumi will give an insight
on the manufacturing of these high precision substrates,
focussing on how the characteristics which are critical for
a successful converting are obtained and measured.
11.15 – 12.00 Physical Testing of Self-adhesive Tapes
Steve Prestidge, Adhesive Technical Services representing
Chemsultants International (U.K.)
Self adhesive properties of peel adhesion, tack and shear
are discussed, including interrelationships of these
properties. Standard test methods, equipment and data
acquisition and reporting are also covered in detail.

14.00 – 14.45 Use of EB- and UV-irradiation for controlling PSA-tape
properties Dr. Stephan Zöllner - tesa AG (G)
Electron beam (EB) and ultraviolet (UV) light treatment
represent widely used concepts in the manufacture of

pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes. Both techniques
are readily applied to continuous web processing and are
particularly suitable to precise control of radiation induced
reactions within the various possible layers constituting
a PSA-tape. In addition to PSA properties further features
related to backings and non-adhesive coatings may be
advantageously affected. The lecture is split into two
sections. In a first part a basic overview on fundamental
aspects related to EB- and UV-radiation is provided, as
these techniques are applied to PSA tape processing. Focus
here is on EB-cross-linking. The second part is devoted to
the presentation of several case studies which are intended
to provide more detailed insights into special topics.
14.45 – 15.30 Selection of the Right Release Liner

In the various fields of pressure sensitive materials the
release liner plays an often underestimated role. The choice
of the right release liner and release property is an essential
aspect of a profitable product. This presentation will
give an overview of the variety of possible substrates and
release coatings; furthermore we intend to impart a better
understanding of release values and test methods for
release properties. This is a basic piece of knowledge for the
more and more demanding applications in the PSA market.
16.00 – 16.45 Modern Surface Treatment Methods
Prof. Dr. Andreas Gross – Fraunhofer IFAM (G)
This lecture gives an overview about surface treatment
method enlarging the adhesion of (pressure sensitive)
adhesives on several materials surfaces. Esp. the Plasmatreatments
show an excellent influence. Therefore their different
modes of functioning will be explained on hand actual
examples. Economical and ecological aspects will also be
regarded as possible fields of application in the future.

09.00 – 09.45 Political Molecules in Practice
Leon Rodenburg - Eastman Chemical B.V. (NL)
Chemicals have the image to be nasty and toxic, which is
why every single molecule placed on the market is regulated
by some law or regulation. About 10 years ago, a political debate
was started in the European Commission and Parliament, to
investigate the hazardous properties of chemicals. The debate
resulted in the most complex regulation the world has ever seen:
the Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation
and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), good for 68 pages for the
body of the Regulation, 210 pages of annexes and > 10,000
pages of guidance documents. Meanwhile, the United Nations
worked hard on a Globally Harmonised System for the classification
and labelling of hazardous substances (GHS). This GHS was
implemented in the EU in 2008 and becomes effective in 2010.
This lecture will introduce you the world of political molecules
and how it links to chemical molecules as placed on the market.

After a general presentation of the basis of the rheology
(measurement and key parameters), we will describe the
general features of the relationships between rheological
properties and adherence properties of Pressure Sensitive
Adhesives. We will show that it is possible to predict the
rheological behavior of adhesive formulations from their
composition particularly in the linear domain. A focus will be
made on block copolymers – based adhesives.
11.15 – 12.00 Foams for technical tape applications
Lukas Berger – Sekisui Alveo (CH)
Polymeric foams and polyolefin foams in particular are
widely used in the industry to produce a wide range of tapes
for industrial, household, electronic, medical and construction
appilcations. The properties of the foams can be adjusted
to meet the requirements of the application, so the foam
is suitable for e.g. a sealing tape, a fixation tape or a high
performance mounting tape. This presentation will give an
overview of foam tapes for existing and potential new applications,
their properties and the foams used therefore. It will
also focus on some particilarities which need to be taken into
account when producing a foam tape.

Mike will present the features, advantages and benefits of the
design, manufacture and supply of niche components utilising

Full refund of the participation will be granted if
the cancellation is received in writing no later than

Full refund less a handling fee of € 150 per registrant

No refunds will be granted for requests after March
28, 2012. Telephone cancellations will not be accepted!
