WORD OF THE PRESIDENT
The President
Emilio Angeli
Afera has enjoyed a successful summer and fall, most recently with the holding of its 47 th
Annual Conference in Dublin. I am pleased to report that this was one of the most successful
Conferences ever with the highest attendance of active members in eight years. The
Committee meetings, General Assembly, lecture programme and social programme ran
smoothly and efficiently and received especially high ratings in this year’s participant survey.
In this issue of Afera News, you will find a review of the Annual Conference highlighting the
12 presentations of the working programme (pages 7-9).
Regarding Afera’s publications, I am pleased to note that the 2004 edition of the Afera Test
Methods Manual has been mailed to all Afera members. Publication of the second edition of
the European Specialty Tape Market & End-User Survey is set for the second quarter of 2005.
The Marketing Committee has been working closely with the market analyst to fine-tune the
survey process and to map out the path forward for the unique body of research (see page 5).
Most importantly, MC Chairman Eric Pass would like to emphasise that a high quality 2005
edition can only be assured by a high rate of participation of Afera members in the survey.
An independent agency commissioned by Afera, EIM-Stratus, distributed a membership satisfaction
questionnaire via email to Afera’s entire membership on 8 th October 2004. I would
like to stress that participation in the confidential membership survey is invaluable to Afera’s
Steering Committee’s ability to anticipate the requirements of members and to initiate strategies
that aim to enhance member satisfaction. Please help us help you by taking a moment to
click through and fill out the questionnaire.
In a positive move for the future of Afera’s membership, the SC agreed unanimously to extend
the privileges of Afera’s ‘Other Participants’ category to include attendance of the Annual
Conference along with a few other benefits. I am confident that this will ensure that Afera
remains the leading European umbrella association representing the complete range of interests
of the self adhesive tape industry. For more commentary on this issue, please see “New
Strategy Proposal 2005-2008 for Afera,” page 5.
Afera’s Technical Committee is gearing up once again up to host the 2 nd Tape College on 7 th -
8 th April 2005. This event is intended to build upon the immense success of Afera’s 1 st Tape
College held in March 2004 and will be tuned to suit a growing audience including converters,
distributors and end-users (see page 4).
The TC, following its success in coordinating the harmonisation of European test methods
with those of the US and Japan, will be focusing more intently on environmental regulatory
issues in the future.
I would like to welcome Mr. Eric Pass of Nitto Europe as the new Chairman of the Marketing
Committee, replacing Harald Werner of Lohmann, as well as two new members of the MC:
Mr. J. Webb of 3M UK and Mr. J. Busch of Lohmann Germany.
It has come to my attention that unfortunately our colleague, TC member Mr. Herman
Delsiene of Nitto, suffered a severe car accident a short time ago. All of Afera sends him, his
family and co-workers our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I wish you a profitable closure of 2004 and a healthy and successful 2005.
Emilio Angeli
To provide its members with another opportunity
to brush up on basic industry knowledge,
Afera’s Technical Committee is gearing up to
host the 2 nd Tape College on 7 th -8 th April
2005 at the same location, the Marriott Hotel
in the centre of Brussels, Belgium. This event
is intended to build upon the immense success
of Afera’s 1 st Tape College held in March
2004. The first event attracted a wide range of
participants from around the globe for a dayand-a-half
of introductory technical lectures
and networking.
Open to all tape industry professionals, the 1 st
Tape College was designed to offer anyone in
the tape business the chance to polish their
fundamental industry knowledge by ‘going to
school’ with the experts, exploring the basics
of design, manufacture, application and testing
with tape industry authorities. Event
capacity was quickly filled with mostly those
from R&D and technical divisions, eager to
Afera News - November 2004 - nr. 2
learn from and mingle with their tape industry
compatriots.
The 2 nd Tape College programme will be tuned
to suit a growing audience which will include
Afera members; members of affiliated members;
an expanding section of Afera’s registered participant
base, converters; and outside industry
participants including customers of tape manufacturing
companies such as distributors and
end-users. The 2 nd Tape College participant
base will not consist of returning ‘graduates’.
Rather colleagues from graduates’ departments
or other areas of their organisations who require
an introduction to the industry basics are planning
to attend the Tape College for the first
time.
The Association is confident that both newcomers
to the tape industry, as well as those who
want to expand their knowledge and increase
their effectiveness, will benefit from this educational
course. Whether you are affiliated with a
manufacturer, raw material supplier, distributor,
converter, or end-user, this course will provide a
basic overview of the technologies of the PSA
tape industry. R&D, technical service, quality
control, manufacturing and engineering personnel
in particular will greatly benefit from this
course.
The Technical Committee Subgroup responsible
for organising the Tape College is working
hard to create a programme line-up for the 2 nd
Tape College that will match the format and
include most of the same speakers as last year’s
event. Highlighted in this year’s programme is a
first-time lecture on surface treatment by Prof.
4
By Astrid Lejeune, Lejeune Association Management
Dr. Andreas Gross of the prestigious Fraunhofer
Institute, famous for its regular adhesive courses.
The Tape College’s curriculum and setting are
so popular because the event is styled after a
university seminar. Participants attend ‘classes’
in an informal, classroom-style setting. Various
Afera members have been recruited to participate
as ‘professors’, lecturing for 45 minutes on
their area of expertise within the tape industry.
The venue floor plan is arranged in a manner
conducive to class participation and active
learning. Participants have the opportunity to
ask questions spontaneously during topic presentations.
Participants experience a genuine sense of completion
at the conclusion of the educational,
13/4-day event when an informal, Americanstyle
graduation ceremony is held and the ‘graduates’
are individually recognised and awarded
certificates of completion by Afera’s Technical
Committee Chairman and the Secretary
General.
NEW STRATEGY PROPOSAL 2005-2008
FOR AFERA
Afera’s structure and goals are subjects of continual
discussion among those active in the
Association.
Recently Afera’s Steering Committee, in cooperation
with the Secretary-General, produced
a first draft of a Strategy Proposal 2005-
2008 for the Association. The document
identifies Afera’s mission, values, goals, general
strategy and stakeholders, and provides a
functional overview to-date and analyses of
SWOT, strategic choice & implementation
and the budget.
The purpose of the draft Strategy Proposal is to
define the framework within which Afera is
best able to represent the European self adhesive
tape industry. The plan illustrates precisely
the areas in which Afera can offer its membership
value for its money, as well as the course
which Afera should follow to ensure that member
benefits continue to improve over time.
The plan is also intended to be utilised to shape
resources allocation within the Association.
According to the Steering Committee, the
Strategy Proposal is intended for use as an
The Afera Tape College is modelled after Tape
University 101, organised by Afera’s American
counterpart association, the Pressure Sensitive
Tape Council (PSTC), which has offered educational
seminars for 26 years. In its continuing
effort to add value to its membership, Afera has
pinpointed the need to provide such an event
for its diverse membership base as well as any
other interested industry professionals.
The registration deadline is 18 th February
2005. Updated programme- and registration
details can be found at www.afera.com.
By Astrid Lejeune, Lejeune Association Management
invaluable blueprint by committee members for
efficient planning and operation.
The draft plan states that Afera’s mission is to
satisfy the need of the self adhesive tape industry
for an organised, collaborative platform on
which to share information (excluding competitive
information), to increase the profile
of tape products and the tape business in general,
and to achieve effective representation as
a body in public affairs initiatives.

The propeller driving the association
The Axis=
Committees and
Infrastructure
‘INDUSTRY
COORDINATION’
‘EXTERNAL
POSITIONING’
AXIS
‘INDIVIDUAL
BENEFIT’
The Steering Committee is unanimous in its
agreement that one of Afera’s primary goals
in the intermediate term is to broaden
Afera’s membership base to incorporate all
entities in the tape industry value chain.
This will ensure that Afera remains the leading
European umbrella association representing
the complete range of interests of the self
adhesive tape industry. The goal of broadening
Afera’s membership base would include
the widening of the range of benefits allocated
to Afera’s ‘Other Participants’ category
(e.g. attendance of the Annual Conference).
This move would make joining Afera as an
‘Other Participant’ much more attractive to
certain groups, namely converters.
As essential players in the tape industry supply
chain, converters would play an important
role as ‘Other Participants’ in the Association.
Not only would the exchange of information
and experiences on common topics benefit
Afera’s membership, but converters could contribute
to a better understanding of industryand
market dynamics and offer a broader perspective
of the make-up of the supply chain—
not to mention provide additional technical
information for Afera’s member resources, networking
opportunities for all members and
revenue for Afera. Association policy-makers
view the objectives of different membership
groups within Afera, such as coaters and converters,
to be similar without necessarily creating
negative competition.
One important factor which will affect the
content of the Strategy Proposal is the outcome
of a membership satisfaction questionnaire
which was distributed electronically to
Afera’s entire membership on 8 th October
2004. The results of the questionnaire will be
evaluated and input directly into the body of
the plan by Afera’s Steering Committee.
Participation in the membership survey is
invaluable to Afera’s Steering Committee’s
ability to anticipate the requirements of members
and to initiate strategies that aim to
enhance member satisfaction. Afera hopes
that valuable input into the mission, goals and
strategies of the Association will be elicited
not only from members of large multinational
companies, but of SMEs as well. Only then
can it claim to truly fulfil its task as the
provider of a platform for industry representation
in an evolving business and regulatory
environment.
The draft Strategy Proposal has been formulated
as a four-year roadmap for Afera, to be used
by Afera’s management and Secretariat and
especially new committee members to ensure
that Afera’s mission is carried out. The aim is
to update the finalised Strategic Plan on a
yearly basis in order to maximise the
Association’s results for the benefit of its
stakeholders. As mentioned above, the
finalised Strategy Plan will be distributed on a
regular basis to all incoming committee members
and administrative staff of Afera, to serve
as a blueprint for carrying out the work of
Afera. Finalisation of the plan is anticipated
for the fourth quarter of 2004.
THE AFERA MARKET AND END USER STUDY
A new edition for 2005... and we need your help please!
The European specialty tape market is very
diverse in its scope, and one of Afera’s core
missions has been to create clarity on market
size and growth rates; on the way the market is
segmented; and on trends and opportunities.
Central to that mission was commissioning
AWA Alexander Watson Associates to
research, analyze, and report on the market –
and the first Afera-sponsored ‘European
Specialty Tape Market and End User Survey ‘
was the result. It has certainly provided the
foundations on which to build a solid profile
of our industry – and now we are beginning
work on the second edition, to be published in
2005, which will refine and expand the
achievements of the first edition.
IN THE BEGINNING...
Pioneering research in an undocumented market
is a tough undertaking, and we were aware
when we defined the scope and content of the
study that its success would depend very much
on the commitment of Afera member companies
to supporting the project.
Initial challenges were encountered in the
information Afera could provide. In the past,
production statistics had suffered from a low
level of member participation, inaccurate supply-side
data and a lack of demand-side infor-
mation, as well as a lack of transparency that
led inevitably in taking a different approach.
The first edition of the study demonstrated
both strengths and weaknesses – but overall
the majority opinion has been that the initiative
was worthwhile – and is worthwhile continuing.
THE FUTURE
The first Afera-sponsored European Specialty
Tape Market and End User Survey demonstrated
clearly to all of us that, as an industry
group, we need to embrace a sense of commitment
and direction if we are all to achieve
future success in our businesses. As suppliers,
we need to focus more on demand-side applications
and markets; to identify and understand
future trends and growth opportunities;
and to understand end users. These are the
key factors that the research for the 2005 study
will address on behalf of member companies.
We have defined a structure for the new study
that will look at:
• Market structure
• Demand characteristics
• Drivers and constraints
• Sourcing trends
• Technologies
• Industry issues
--and the research will span the whole of geographical
Europe, including – newly -- the
eastern European countries. We also plan an
additional evaluation of the significance of the
impact of Asian imports into Europe, and a
new focus on trends in adhesives. AWA’s
researchers will also undertake an increased
number of end-user interviews. The major
end-use industry segments for specialty tapes
have been identified, and the scope and
methodology of AWA’s research will take
these as its prime reference points.
Now all that remains to ‘get the show on the
road’ is to ensure YOUR commitment as
members to help create a detailed understanding
of our industry so that we can be ready to
identify and benefit from future opportunities
– and find solutions to future threats. Your
input is critical, and we cannot urge you
strongly enough to give time to assisting
AWA in achieving our mission.
Committee
AFERA’S 47 TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN DUBLIN
By Astrid Lejeune, Lejeune Association Management
Situated in the spirited city of Dublin,
Afera’s 47 th Annual Conference successfully
presented itself once again as the
international meeting place for the self
adhesive tape industry. Hosted at The
Westin Dublin from 29 th September – 2 nd
October 2004, the working programme
focused on the collaboration of Afera’s
members and various committees and
included 12 lectures covering the latest
trends in the tape industry.
The Conference had a showing of 125
delegates from 18 countries, including
the US and Japan. Attendance of active
members was the highest in eight years.
In a participant survey conducted at the
end of the event, an overwhelming
majority expressed their great satisfaction
with the high quality and relevance of
lectures, meetings and excursions.
Following the opening of the Conference
by Afera President Emilio Angeli on 30 th
September, Mr. T. O’Malley T.D., an
Irish Minister of State, delivered the first
lecture, covering the subject of
“Development and Economic Outlook in
Ireland.” Mr. O’Malley explained the
opportunities of and threats to the Irish
economy, which has been the fastest
growing European economy over the last
decade. Some of these factors include
increasingly open markets, intensifying
competition, technological development
and a disaggregated value chain.
Second on the working programme agenda
was an update from Afera’s American
counterpart organisation, the PSTC, “the
voice of North American manufacturers
within the global industry.” Presented by
Mr. Dale McSween of Intertape Polymer
Group, Inc. (U.S.A.) and PSTC’s current
president, the lecture focused on a review
of North American industry in terms of
projected economic growth, production
trends, inventories/sales ratios, capacity
utilisation rates in manufacturing,
employment rates and market volume
rates of manufacturers shipments.
Mr. McSween discussed the similarities
between the two organisations: global
memberships, internet communications,
test methods and educational programmes.
Future opportunities for cooperation
include working more with
Pacific Rim countries, sharing ‘best practises’,
committee minutes, industry data
and technical- and environmental programmes.
An “Update on the Harmonisation of
Test Methods and the Newly Launched
Afera Test Methods Manual” was the subject
of the third lecture of the series,
given by Mr. P. Lloyd of 3M (U.K.) and a
member of Afera’s Technical Committee.
Mr. Lloyd explained that four globally
harmonised test methods (Peel
Adhesion, Shear Adhesion, Breaking
Strength and Elongation at Break and
Thickness) are the result of Afera’s great
efforts to co-ordinate European test
methods with those of the US and Japan.
Because of differences in instrument
specifications, the Japanese Adhesive
Tape Manufacturer’s Association
(JATMA) has approved all methods
except for ‘Thickness’; therefore at present
only three test methods will be submitted
for approval by the International
Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).
Afera has entered the fast-track procedure
for becoming certified by the ISO,
the duration of which is estimated at 13
months from the point of formal acceptance
of the Association’s working programme
by the ISO chief executive’s
office. The latest edition of the Afera
Test Methods Manual is now available at
Afera’s Secretariat.
A particularly highly-rated presentation
was delivered by Mr. W. Roessing of
ExxonMobil (Germany), covering
“Pressure Sensitive Tape Production in
Europe.” According to Mr. Roessing,
world PSA tape production was estimated
at around 21 billion square meters in
2003, an increase of 4% compared to
that of 2002. Japan was the production
leader with 7 billion square meters and
will probably continue to lead in the
near future.
Production in Europe remained flat with
1% growth, reflecting the current economic
situation. Mr. Roessing predicts
that Europe and the Americas are
expected to benefit from the beginnings
of economic recovery and should return
to annual average growth rates of 2-3%
just beyond 2004.
Mr. Roessing identified a number of
important industry trends in his presentation:
Packaging tape in industrialised
regions has almost completed its penetration
into alternative carton sealing systems.
Future growth is expected to be in
line with GDP. In developing countries,
packaging tapes will continue to grow by
capturing market share from alternative
closing systems. Future growth is expected
to exceed that of GDP.
7 Afera News - November 2004 - nr. 2

Packaging tape is considered to be a commodity
product with limited opportunities
for differentiation; therefore, specialty
tape production will remain limited.
Along these lines, Germany, France, the
Benelux, the UK and Japan are focussing
on the production of high margin specialty
tapes primarily for industrial applications.
Consumer market growth is
pushing masking tape growth. Lastly, Mr.
Roessing noted that hot melt technology
is globally the growth technology, with
44% of total production volume in 2003.
Dr. David Gagnon of 3M (U.S.A.) and
Mr. A. Thyssen of 3M (Germany) then
delivered an interesting lecture on
“Market Driven Customer Focussed
Innovation.” From the point of view of
3M’s business and technological systems,
Dr. Gagnon outlined the positive results
of driving business using creativity and
innovation to satisfy customer needs.
Firstly, there will be a reduction in
defects rates through better design which
will be based on customer demand.
Ultimately companies will reap better
returns on their investments in creating
and refining products, and they will
accelerate the product development
process.
The subject of the synergies between Six
Sigma and the Horizon Process and their
benefits to customers was the topic of the
last presentation of the first day, presented
by Mr. B. De Dier of Avery Dennison
(Belgium).
The Six Sigma methodology uses data
and statistical analysis to measure and
improve a company’s operational performance
by identifying and eliminating
‘defects’ in manufacturing and servicerelated
processes. Avery Dennison
developed the in-house initiative scheme
Horizon to research and develop new
products and meet specific sales targets
Afera News - November 2004 - nr. 2
within short ranges of time. Both corporate
initiatives address customer needs,
encourage achievement among personnel,
improve productivity, and bring
about innovation through growth and
created opportunities.
In a rapidly developing self adhesive tape
market, how are Afera members affected
in their choice of investment when buying
machinery? This was the topic question
put forward by Mr. Bruce McNeill of
Ghezzi & Annoni (Italy) at the beginning
of the second day of the programme.
In this very popular lecture, Mr. McNeill
stated that Afera members are generally
focusing on specific machinery which will
improve their throughput and production
costs, while ensuring that the quality
level of products must remain high.
Because of various global political and
economic circumstances, Afera member
companies have witnessed price undercutting
and loss of market share to highly
competitive ASIAN producers, as well as
decreased exports to developing countries
with positive economic growth. As
a result there has been little new investment
in water based coating lines but
rapid growth in demand for hot melt
coating lines. A number of Afera members
have moved a share of their
resources from the production of packaging
tape to other niche products by
investing in specialised machines.
Mr. McNeill suggests that Afera member
companies may regain some competitive
advantage if the dollar regains its
strength against the euro, making
European exports less expensive to the
rest of the world. Presently there is a
tendency of tape companies to reduce
costs through bypassing distributors by
expanding their sales sections to maintain
direct contact with end-users.
8
While most Afera member companies are
striving to maintain a competitive edge
by investing in the latest technology in
machinery, others have just been optimising
their existing equipment with
minimal investment, waiting for better
economic times. Any level of investment
in machinery is aimed at increasing
productivity, increasing automation to
reduce labour costs, creating versatility,
fully integrating production lines and
maintaining the lowest investment costs
possible.
The subject of “EU Environmental
Legislation and PSAs” was the topic of
the next, extremely well-received presentation
delivered by Mr. P. Verspoor of
Sitmae Consultancy (The Netherlands).
Mr. Verspoor began by outlining the hot
environmental subjects for the tape
industry: The Packaging and Packaging
Waste (PPW) Directive, the Integrated
Pollution Prevention and Control
(IPPC) Directive and Best Available
Techniques Reference Document
(BREF), and the European Chemicals
Policy (REACH—Registration,
Evaluation and Authorisation of
CHemicals).
The PPW, amended in February 2004, is
aimed at regulating all packaging waste
in the EU and requires producers to meet
specific production and recycling targets
by 2008. The development of a BREF
for the reduction of solvent emissions in
the framework of the IPPC Directive is
underway. The second draft of the document,
including BAT proposals, is due for
submission to the EC in the autumn of
2004.
CheMI is discussing new legislation
which would account for the lack of efficiency
of the current proposed REACH
legislation, particularly with relation to
the predicted ‘de-selection’ of specialty
chemicals which will occur under the

new registration system. Mr. Verspoor
discussed the unfortunate outcomes of
de-selection of chemicals to industry and
the resulting costly, lengthy process of
reformulating preparations, including the
iterative process of ‘trial and error’. This
aspect of REACH alone would be highly
detrimental to the EU economy.
An overview of the survey process and
the second issuance of the European
Specialty Tape Market & End-User Survey
was the following presentation given by
Mr. Corey Reardon of Alexander Watson
Associates (The Netherlands). Mr.
Reardon reviewed the extensive feedback
AWA had received on the first edition of
the study and detailed the methodology,
scope and path forward, content and timing
of the next edition, which is set for
publication in the second quarter of
2005. Mr. Reardon emphasized that the
quality of the next edition of the study
can only be assured by a high rate of participation
in the survey among the Afera
membership.
Next Mrs. Kristine Dhaeze of Avery
Dennison Medical (Belgium) delivered a
highly-rated lecture on PSAs for medical
tapes. Mrs. Dhaeze details the basic qualities
of human skin and their relevance
for tape performance, and then she
describes panel and clinical test methods
used to determine skin adhesion.
These tests can prove useful for total
product positioning, estimating performance,
perceived performance and suitability
for specific situations. Mrs.
Dhaeze emphasizes that safety is the first
concern in the development of medical
tape. A key requirement is the monitoring
of (shelf-life) stability and sterilisation
which can affect the physical properties
of tape.
Mrs. Dhaeze reviews the introduction of
new materials in medical tapes, specifically
in advanced wound care products.
The extent to which various medical
adhesives are received in professional
markets determines if there will be spinoff
potential in consumer applications.
There has been a shift in focus from pure
fixation of medical adhesives to fixation
with minimal trauma to the skin.
Finally, an important aspect of formulating
medical PSAs is how tapes respond
to ‘good wetting of the skin.’ According
to Mrs. Dhaeze, both occlusive and nonocclusive
tapes must be developed.
“Development Opportunities in the
European Paper, Print & Packaging
Sector” is the topic of the following lecture
delivered by Mr. R. Pollard of
Enterprise Ireland. Mr. Pollard introduces
his semi-governmental organisation
which supports locally controlled
industry and expounded the favourable
climate in Ireland for industry.
International co-operation, R&D, technological
innovation, alliances opportunities
with complementary companies or
product lines are the determinants for
competitiveness of business. Ireland
boasts an environment conducive to
enhancing all of these business factors,
with a favourable tax regime, existing
print and packaging associations, a grip
on emerging technologies and trends,
and already over a thousand companies
which have established themselves and
invested in the country.
An “EU Convergence Update” was the
last item on the working agenda of
Afera’s Annual Conference. Delivered
by Mr. M. Szczurek of ING Financial
Markets (Poland), the lecture covers the
economic risks and opportunities for EU
enlargement for EU industry.
Mr. Szczurek states that the new Europe
has an added a fresh competitive boost of
the E.U. in terms of prices, wages, productivity
and exchange rates, but there
are major challenges for the old member
states in the areas of macroeconomic policy
and industrial changes. Mr. Szczurek
also reviews a potentially EU-wide EMU
and concludes that it might not be positive
for the euro or the current unreformed
countries and industries.
outlined above are available at
NEWS OF THE INDUSTRY
3M EUROPE S.A. – BELGIUM
Commercial Signage Improve Design,
Extend Lifetime and Reduce Costs
Poor commercial signage is arguably
worse than no signage at all. 3M offers a
comprehensive range of effective bonding
solutions that provide aesthetic and
durable performance tailored to material
choice and sign design.
The rivets, screws and spot-welding
typical to conventional sign fabrication
often necessitate compromises to
design, durability and cost. Both 3M
VHB tape and 3M Scotch-Weld
EPX adhesive offer designers costeffective
and resilient alternatives for
multiple sign formats.
Design alternatives are also available
for temporary and removable signage.
3M Dual Lock Reclosable
Fasteners are made of hundreds of
mushroom-shaped stems that interlock
and secure assembly when pressed
together. The result is a very strong and
yet reclosable assembly that can be
opened and closed up to 1,000 times
and is 12 times stronger than alternative
hook and loop
systems. 3M also offers a selection of
removable foam tapes for temporary
signs that deliver strong adhesion and
allow clean and easy removability from
most surfaces.
Whether signage attaches dissimilar
materials, requires a water-tight seal or
thermal performance, 3M Tapes and
Adhesives provide the solution: strong
and durable bonding and cost-effective.
ADVANCE TAPES INTERNATIONAL
LTD. – UNITED KINGDOM
40 years of quality at Advance Tapes
Advance Tapes International celebrates
40 years of manufacturing specialist
self adhesive tapes this year.
Founded in 1964 and based in
Leicester, the company has grown from
its initial start up of 3 people to a multi
million pound company with 2 manu-
Afera News - November 2004 - nr. 2
facturing sites in Leicester and sales
and distribution centres in France and
Germany.
Still family owned, Advance Tapes
employs around 200 people across its 2
Leicester based sites and manufactures
an impressive range of cloth, filmic, foil
and double sided tapes for industrial
applications.
It is especially fitting that this year,
Advance Tapes’ quality management
system has been re-accredited to the
coveted ISO 9001:2000 standard.
“Advance Tapes was the first tape manufacturer
to achieve the BS 5750 quality
standard in 1987. Achieving ISO
9001:2000 is our guarantee of ensuring
that quality continues to be at the heart
of everything we do” said Mike Ayres,
Chief Executive, at Advance Tapes.
“In the current business climate, delivering
world class service and earning
our customers’ trust is more important
than ever before,” explains Mike.
“That’s why we considered it so important
to upgrade to the quality standard
that is recognised world-wide. Our company
ethos is based on bringing world
class service to tape manufacture. ISO
9001:2000 covers our business processes
from the moment a customer contacts
us to the final product reaching its destination.”
This step forward in quality management
at Advance Tapes comes at the
same time as the company has been
reaccredited with Investor in People
status. Mike continued: “This award
recognises Advance Tapes’ efforts to put
staff development at the centre of its
business strategy. Recognition by both
ISO and Investors in People represents
a clear assurance to our customers that
Advance Tapes is even better placed to
meet their needs. Our investments in
people and quality ensure that we can
look to the future with optimism”.
FIBERMARK GESSNER – GERMANY
FiberMark Gessner has launched low
odour level carrier paper for the production
of Masking Tapes
Within the framework of the environmental
programme according to ISO 14001,
FiberMark Gessner worked consistently on
reducing the odour emissions of the carrier
paper on sticky tapes.
With the help of newly developed raw
materials with less odour FiberMark
Gessner succeeded in making a significant
reduction in the concentration of odour
producing substances. This is not only
good for the environment but also more
pleasant for customer’s production.
So, FiberMark Gessner is the first provider
of a low odour level carrier paper for the
production of Masking Tapes.
GOLDSCHMIDT AG - GERMANY
Goldschmidt adds cationic UV Silicones
to its product range!
Goldschmidt always has been the recognised
expert with core competence in radiation
curable silicones. As a logical consequence,
Goldschmidt now has also included
cationic curing silicone epoxies represented
by the new TEGO® RC 1400
Series that are complementary to the existing
silicone acrylates of the 4th generation
(TEGO® RC 700/900 Series). The cationic
product range comprises easy, controlled
and tight release polymers plus an easy
release additive that all come along with
the well known Goldschmidt technical service.
The photo catalyst is supplied in a
proprietary reactive polymer solvent for
that Goldschmidt has filed a patent. With
1 to 2 % addition of the cationic photo
catalyst, the silicones are ready for UV curing.
ICHEMCO SRL - ITALY
Company Information:
Ichemco has strengthened its technical
sales organization, which is now managed
by Mr. Ezio Curioni (Man. Director and
Marketing Manager), Mr. Giuseppe
Quinque (Commercial Manager, Italy), Dr.
Francesca Bellini (Export Manager), Dr.
Luca Toscani (Technical Sales Manager).
Technical Information:
We are continuously expanding our specialty
adhesives. Ichemco has a strong
expertise for all sorts of removable p.s.
adhesives. We like to mention here:
SOLACRIL 203: solvent based acrylic
p.s.a for PE protective films, to be
crosslinked with isocyanate. Suggested for
outdoor applications, with excellent resistance
to oxidation and UV light.
TACKSOL 10/83B, 10/86: solvent based
NR p.s.a.’s for PE protective films; to
improve its performances it can be
crosslinked with isocyanate. Suggested to
protect difficult and painted surfaces; good
outdoor performance.
TACKWHITE AP5, AP7: water based
acrylic p.s.a.’s for PE protective films.
Suggested for indoor applications; have different
tack and peel adhesion; to be cured
with suitable crosslinker (Ichemco).
TACKWHITE AT5: water based NL p.s.a.,
with good resistance to aging and UV light
. Suggested for the production of paper
“application tapes”.
We have just started the introduction of a
new range of hotmelt p.s.a’s.
Please contact us for more information.
Market Information:
Our results, after first year half, are satisfactory
(+5%), but we are really afraid that
market struggles (R.M. dramatic price
increases, lack of base monomers, etc) are
creating tremendous difficulties and lack of
confidence for the future.
LOHMANN GMBH & CO KG -
GERMANY
The company Lohmann/Germany has
development a new product range. The
Dupiocoll/ Duplotac high performance
transfer adhesive tapes offer optimal performance
even under extreme condition. The
pure acrylic adhesive has been designed to
provide a permanent bond even at high
temperatures and its properties include
resistance to extreme chemical exposure.
So the adhesive stands temperatures up to
300 ºC (short term) and up to 220 ºC
(long term). Last but not least for this reason
the transfer tapes are qualified for the
automotive industry, e.g. for the bonding of
brake shims. Other application areas are
the bonding of nameplates, membrane
switches or faceplate panels.
NOVACEL – FRANCE
Novacel, the Global Trademark for the
Leader in Surface Protection Films,
Develops its North America Business
When the French company Novacel
acquired the surface protection division of
the American group Ivex in 2000, this
activity took on the name of Ivex Novacel.
On May 1, 2004, the company became
Novacel Inc., the North American subsidiary
of Novacel. A pioneer for protective
films in North America, Novacel Inc.
is proud to have adopted the name of the
world leader of protective films. The company
makes up an important part of the
global group creating, manufacturing and
marketing Novacel surface protection
films.
In today’s global economy, a growing number
of products must be protected against
scratches and dirt during assembly, handling,
storage and transport. To meet this
need, Novacel manufactures self-adhesive
film for the protection of surfaces including
sheet metal (stainless steel, aluminum, precoated
metal), plastic sheets and plastic
profiles used in the building and automotive
industries. Other films are used to
protect screens of electronic devices and
appliances such as cell phones, laptops, CD
players and PDAs. These easy-to-use films
protect surface quality while reducing costs
incurred because of damaged goods.
Novacel Inc. operates through its sites
located in Massachussets, Illinois and
Afera News - November 2004 - nr. 2
The new plant is a result of Scapa’s decision
to invest £22 million over a six year
period to create a manufacturing ‘centre of
excellence’ for cable products. It will also
play host to a state-of-the-art research and
development facility designed to drive
innovations in the cable and wire industry.
Considerable investment has resulted in
the addition of three continuous compounding
plants: a laboratory machine for
new product development, a pilot plant for
short runs of specialist products and large
production machinery for higher volumes.
Manufacturing of Megolon compound in
Ashton, as well as at Scapa’s existing
Manchester premises, will facilitate a significant
increase in production.
Scapa’s Megotape range of cable wrapping
tapes – which include water swellable,
semi-conductive, insulative, fire retardant
and bitumenised tapes – will also be manufactured
at the Ashton plant. A new two
metre wide coating machine, as well additional
conversion equipment to ensure slit-
test methods, equipment suppliers and a glossary
of terms, as well as a comparative table
categorising Afera’s test methods and their
corresponding CEN, ISO, ASTM and PSTC
methods.
ting capacity is in line with coating, will be
housed at the site.
Dr. Jack Taylor, Business Unit Director for
cable products at Scapa, comments: “As the
market moves more towards the use of zerohalogen,
fire retardant technology, cable
manufacturers are looking for suppliers that
can provide both volume compounds as
well as their individual niche requirements.
Our increased capacity means we are well
positioned to satisfy these needs.”
Scapa’s Polymerics, part of the Scapa
Group, has three product ranges: Megolon,
Megotape and Scapa Components, which
are exported to over 45 countries worldwide.
Scapa is a leading developer and
manufacturer of specialist technical tapes
and compounds to virtually every industry
worldwide, including cable, automotive,
medical and industrial. With current sales
of around £190 milion, Scapa has focused
its resources on developing world-class
manufacturing facilities to service customers
in a number of key sectors.
