PhD THESES ON ANAEROBIC DIGESTION Biomass Granulation and Treatment of Sewage using UASB Reactor by Puspendu Bhunia Institution: Civil Engineering Department Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur-721 302, WB, India Supervisor: Dr M.M. Ghangrekar Abstract: Biomass granulation in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor still remains a challenging task while treating many wastewaters. This study enlightens the criteria’s for the determination of minimum size of granules, required to gain advantage of granular sludge configuration and variation of different properties with size of granules. Based on sedimentation theory, this study suggests 0.34 mm as the minimum size of granules for sludge with specific gravity of 1.035. Likewise, 0.52 mm, 0.41 mm, 0.36 mm, 0.33 mm, and 0.3 mm should be considered as minimum size of granules for specific gravity of 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, and 1.05, respectively for retention of granules inside the reactor. For thick inoculum, suspended solids (SS) > 110 g/l and volatile suspended solids (VSS) to SS ratio < 0.3, cationic polymer additives were found to have a negative impact on biomass granulation and COD removal efficiency. Based on the statistical models it is concluded that for such thick inoculum, granulation can be obtained for treating low strength wastewaters by selecting proper combinations of influent COD and liquid upflow velocity, making organic loading rate (OLR) greater than 1.0 kg COD/m 3 .d. A Biomass Granulation Index (BGI) has been framed based on mixing in the sludge bed, induced due to biogas and superficial upflow velocity of wastewater in UASB reactors. Based upon the above studies, it is concluded that good granular sludge (percentage of granules more than 50%, w/w) can be developed in UASB reactor if BGI is maintained in the rage of 245 to 480. Three kinetic models namely, Monod, Grau second-order, and Haldane model have been studied to predict the effluent COD concentration at steady-state. The results indicate that Grau second-order multicomponent substrate removal model fits well for estimates of kinetic coefficient in UASB reactors. The investigation of nonlinear regression using different error functions as well as prediction analysis reveals association of errors with the linearized forms of Monod model used for evaluating the kinetic coefficients. Hence, it is advisable to undertake nonlinear regression technique using different error functions in the determination of kinetic coefficients for Monod model.
