PAST AND COMING CONFERENCES AND EVENTS An experts' colloquium on anaerobic technology: Sustainable Energy Production and Wastewater Treatment Keynote Speaker: Prof. Dr. Gatze Lettinga The Experts’ Colloquium will be held on the morning of Thursday, 25 th June 2009 at the SUNTEC Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. The Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) and Lettinga Associates Foundation (LeAF), together with World Scientific Publishing, are proud to announce An Experts' Colloquium on Anaerobic Technology - Sustainable Energy Production and Wastewater Treatment. This Colloquium, held in honor of Prof. Dr. Gatze Lettinga, winner of the 2009 Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize, aims to bring together leaders in anaerobic technology to discuss the sustainability and future of Anaerobic Technology. Held in conjunction with the Singapore International Water Week 2009, an international panel of leading academics and industry speakers will be touching on various topics in anaerobic technology. The goal of the workshop is to share with stakeholders a more sustainable approach in environmental engineering, focusing on the state of the art, potentials & challenges of implementing modern high-rate anaerobic treatment systems in integrated settings for applications in Asia and elsewhere. The Colloquium’s Keynote Speaker, Prof. Dr. Gatze Lettinga will share his insights on the topic “The Ever-Improving Digestibility of High Rate Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment”. The forthcoming journal, Advances in Environmental Research and Development (AERD) will also be launched during the colloquium. AERD aims for rapid dissemination of original and high quality technical papers which may be in materials, analytical techniques, water and wastewater treatment, water reclamation, water quality, modeling of quantity and quality, air pollution management and control, soil remediation, and wastes management and resource recovery. Annual Anaerobic Treatment Short Course in USA The annual short course titled "Anaerobic Treatment of High-Strength Industrial Waste" will be held September 16-17, 2009 at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Speakers will include Drs. Willy Verstraete (Gent University), Daniel Zitomer (Marquette University) and Dennis Totzke (Applied Technologies, Inc.). Information will be presented regarding sustainability and greenhouse gas emission avoidance, biogas utilization, anaerobic treatment fundamentals, operating strategies, design/construction/start-up guidelines and case studies of operating anaerobic treatment systems. The International Workshop on Strategy for Anaerobic Biotechnology 24-27 November 2009 Xi'an Nan Yang Hotel, Xi’an, China. Hosted by: Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China Anaerobic treatment has been accepted as an important technology which has been playing a key role in sustainable development since the past thirty years. A symbol for this is that the very prestigious “Tyler Prize of Environmental Achievement” (April, 2007) and the “Lee Kuan Yew Prize”(June, 2009) awarded Professor G. Lettinga, the main inventor of UASB and the promoter of the other innovative concepts on anaerobic technology. To push forward the application of this sustainable technology, an international workshop on anaerobic biotechnology will be held on November 24-27, 2009 in Xi'an, China. It will also be good for the people who are engaged in this field to meet each other, exchange their experiences and ideas. On the occasion, famous experts and scholars will give interesting reports. Topics: 1. The research and application of anaerobic biological in industrial and domestic wastewater treatment. 2. Key technology and equipment on anaerobic wastewater treatment 3. Moletta, what have we learnt And how could this be useful for tomorrow Dr. René Moletta, the founder of the “Laboratoire de Biotechnologie de l’Environnement” (LBE-INRA - http://www.montpellier.inra.fr/narbonne) has been active for more than 30 years in promoting Anaerobic Digestion all over the world, both at a scientific level and in an industrial perspective. Before he retires, former colleagues wish to thank him in organising a special 2 day workshop on Anaerobic Digestion, An Old Story for Today and Tomorrow. This workshop will be a unique opportunity to listen to world wide recognised top scientists, to hear their great expertise in the field, to share their experience and their view of history, and to discuss with them about future in a friendly atmosphere. This workshop is also special in the sense that there will be no deadlines for sending an abstract… just a place to be and not to miss ! Both from an academic and industrial perspective! Registration is limited to 150 persons and early registration is recommended. It will take place in Narbonne, France, on the 10th and 11th of December 2009. Narbonne is a lovely and sunny city located in the south of France and has a great history since the Roman time. The workshop will be help in the “salle des synodes”, a charming hall in the old palace of the archbishops, downtown Narbonne.
