WANNEROO
Two Rocks Volunteer Sea Rescue welcomed an
$80,000 grant from the City of Wanneroo, which
helped buy a new rescue boat. The new rescue
boat can reach speeds up to 40knots, allowing
them to respond to emergencies quickly, as well
as having a second vessel on hand. Pictured
above is Wanneroo Mayor Jon Kelly with
Commander David Haynes and Jim Smith.
WAROONA
On the Monday, 10 January, a bushfire
devastated many properties in Lake Clifton.
Six months later, under the guidance of
local resident and photographer Kelly Doye,
community members banded together to
help their own healing process by exhibiting
artworks, photographs, drawings and trinkets
affected by fire that show just what can happen
to all types of materials that have been affected
by fire in a community arts initiative titled “Under
the shade of a burnt stick”. Representatives
from FESA have expressed an interest in using
some of the pieces from the exhibition as part
of their campaign to raise community awareness
prior to the bush fire season. The exhibition
was sponsored by the Shire of Waroona, City
of Mandurah, State Government and the Rural
Business Development Corporation.
YALGOO
In August The Shire of Yalgoo Council was
fortunate to receive a presentation to Yalgoo
Library of a DVD and information on the son
et lumiere that held in 1996 at the site of the
‘ruins’ beside Yalgoo General Store. Hundreds
attended the play, which was encored by
popular demand at Theatre 8 in Geraldton.
The play was created to celebrate Yalgoo’s
centenary, commemorating men and women
who contributed to Yalgoo over the prior
100 years. Solomon Lowns owned ‘the ruin’,
which although never roofed, was run as a
general store. Solomon lost his hand when he
was the victim of a parcel bomb in Yalgoo in
1903. Despite his disability, he later built the
store to a standard such that the remains are
the only standing example of a building of
this era in Yalgoo. Yalgoo Through the Eyes
of Solomon William Lowns was presented
by Noel and Kate Rickerby and directed by
Robert McEachern with a script written by
Terry O’Neill. Pictured above left to right are
