7. September ALBANY The City of Albany has welcomed a promised $250,000 to plan Albany’s ANZAC Interpretive Centre in preparation for the ANZAC Centenary commemorations from 2014 to 2018. Albany plays a significant role in the ANZAC Centenary as a departure point for soldiers in World War I and as host of the first official dawn service. This is Australia’s first federally funded plan for an ANZAC Centenary Commemoration project and was proposed by the Albany Centenary of ANZAC Alliance, a partnership formed by the City of Albany and the RSL Albany Sub-branch. The Alliance has plans for a heritage structure built into the contours of the hill with 240 degree, panoramic views of King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour. AUGUSTA MARGARET RIVER State Government recently announced $25 million funding for the new boat harbour with construction due to start later this year. The harbour will provide safe direct ocean access for recreational and commercial craft between Busselton and Albany. BAYSWATER (COVER PICTURE) Competitors battled it across the finish line at Riverside Gardens, Bayswater during the 2011 Avon Descent. The City of Bayswater’s Family Fun Day was held in conjunction with the Avon Descent and sponsored by Lotterywest and the Council. The event offered families prime viewing of the finish line along with a big screen with live race commentary, roving entertainment, face painting, balloon sculptures and bouncy castles. BELMONT The City of Belmont held its ninth annual Art and Photographic Awards and Exhibition from Monday, 8 to Saturday, 20 August at the Belmont Forum Shopping Centre. With a significant increase in the number of pieces entered into the competition from last year, it was a difficult decision for the judges to pick the winners. The City extends its thanks to all the artists and photographers for sharing their talents with the community. Pictured above is Belmont Mayor Glenys Godfrey with the award winners. BROOKTON On Friday, 26 and Saturday, 27 August, the Brookton business community joined Councillors and practitioners from Economic Development Australia (EDA) for a weekend workshop under the Regional Economic Development Training Program. Members of EDA donate their time to bring expertise to regional Australia. The weekend included sessions on case-studies of economic development approaches, delivery of the ED toolbox, as well as a targeted session exploring local possibilities. As a growing community on the peri-urban fringe, Brookton has a raft of economic development opportunities, including the proposed Brookton- Kwinana rail-link. CANNING The City of Canning’s new multipurpose centre, The Cannington Leisureplex, reached an important milestone last month with the completion of the geothermal bore. The bore reaches a depth of 1km where water at approximately 45 degrees Celsius is extracted and pumped to a plant room. The bore water does not go into the pool but heats it via a sophisticated heat exchange system. It is then returned to the ground, with a near zero loss of water to the underground reservoir. The centre is due to be completed by mid – 2012 and when complete will also feature grey water recycling, further enhancing its sustainability credentials. COCKBURN Primary school students from across the City of Cockburn came together at Coogee’s Len McTaggart Park on Friday, 5 August to plant trees for Hiroshima Day, remembering those devastated by the first atomic bomb in 1945. The City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett said Hiroshima Day was an important annual occasion for the City of Cockburn, teaching students about a world-changing historical event and the need for building a sustainable future. DUNDAS The Shire of Dundas received grant funding from the Office of Crime Prevention for the Build a Buggy – Build a Life program which was undertaken in conjunction with the Norseman Police and Norseman District High School. The project saw the Year 10, 11 and 12 students build two dune buggies from kit form. To be eligible for the project the students had to maintain an 85% attendance rate at school, not be charged by the Police with any criminal offence and not be involved in any anti-social behaviour including those associated with drugs, solvents or alcohol. After completion of the buggies the students involved with the project had the opportunity to drive the buggies on an overnight excursion to Fraser Range Station. westerncouncillor SEPTEMBER 2011
