VENTURA COLLEGE
AWARDED $3.8 MILLION
TITLE V GRANT
Ventura College and Oxnard College have been selected by the U.S. Department
of Education to receive funding under the Strengthening Institutions – Hispanic
Serving Institutions Program. The grant awarded for the period of October 1, 2010
through September 30, 2015 will be in the amount of $3,873,377 distributed over the
five-year period. Ventura College, as the lead institution, will receive $2,957,058, and
Oxnard College, the partner institution, will receive $916,318.
Title V grants are designed to strengthen Hispanic serving institutions and increase
enrollment, graduation, and transfer rates of Hispanic students. Activities that
will be funded under the grant include expanding access to student services;
developing appropriate academic and student services accessible to all learners;
enhancing VCCCD’s web portal to improve efficiency, student engagement, and
access to information and online services; increasing faculty professional development
opportunities; and improving student services through technology.
In sharing the news, Ventura College President Robin Calote stated, “These grant
dollars will provide Ventura College with the ability to implement our plan to
reengineer student services. Funds will be available to improve outreach to area high
school students, to establish an “intake” office for new students, to hire a systems
analyst consultant to improve the flow of information on the student portal, and to
enhance the online services available to students. Funds will also be available to hire
a full-time faculty Instructional Design Specialist who will organize and implement
an annual summer institute for instructional faculty members and provide ongoing
training and support on curriculum design, online course development and delivery,
and the use of technologies as teaching tools. We are very grateful for this opportunity
and excited to see the improvements that will result!”
Upon receiving the announcement at Oxnard College, President Richard Durán
noted, “We are very happy with the outcome of this important funding that will
further support Oxnard College’s efforts to provide students with the resources they
need to achieve their goals. The collaborative actions identified in the grant are what is
needed to improve student success. It’s a win-win for our students and the community.
Specifically, the grant will enhance our student services through professional
development, online counseling, as well as provide resources to implement new
advising software (AgileGrad) and develop online tutoring. We will also benefit from
portal enhancements.”
Tremendous effort went into developing the grant proposal by project team members,
including Mike Gaudette, Dr. Robin Calote, Dr. Richard Duran, Ramiro Sanchez, Dr.
Erika Endrijonas, David Keebler, Dr. Jon al-Amin, Dr. Gwendolyn Lewis Huddleston, Victoria
LITERATURE, ARTS & LECTURE SERIES
The Oxnard College Literature Arts & Lecture Series kicked off another program in September
in celebration of Deaf Awareness Month. Joel Garcia, deaf since birth, shared his experiences
growing up in Oxnard in a Mexican hearing family and how he learned to communicate with
them. In October, former FBI SWAT team member, James Botting, reflected on high-profile crimes,
including the Patty Hearst kidnapping, Rodney King riots, and Waco Texas tragedy. These were
just two of the 12 wide-ranging events held this fall.
Professor Shelley Savren is the Founder and Faculty Coordinator of the Oxnard College Literature,
Arts & Lecture Series. Upon meeting Savren, one immediately senses her passion for the Lecture
Series and how excited she is about the variety of topics and perspectives she works hard to share
with students and the community in an open forum for everyone. “I really appreciate the support
I get and the opportunity to do something like the Literature, Arts & Lecture Series. It’s a vision
I have, and I think it’s really wonderful for the surrounding community and for our students to be
exposed to the quality of presenters that we bring onto the campus.”
Savren started the series, formerly known as the “Scholars Lecture Series,” back in 1994 as a result
of working on another project with a former Vice President of Oxnard College. “We launched
a small series at the time and because we had no email, I just asked people if they would like
to present a topic of interest to students and the community. The first lecture series included
six instructors, and we continued engaging college instructors to present in this manner for two
years. Once Oxnard College implemented email, the word spread, and the series was expanded
to all three campuses.”
Behind the scenes, Savren was also organizing poetry readings, inviting poets on campus,
and started a creative writing club. Then, the Scholar Series began to blossom, received some
funding and grants with matching funds, and eventually was funded each semester. With a
budget in place, Savren was able to invite artists and scholars from all over California and as far
as New York. Savren brought in holocaust survivors, environmentalists and some VIPs, including
California Poet Laureate Al Young, United Farm Worker co-founder Dolores Huerta, and author of
Soloist, Steve Lopez. Soon, interested presenters emailed Savren seeking her out with topics r
anging from poetry, war veterans, and martial arts to homelessness, immigration, and medical
issues. Once the series became quite large, the Oxnard College Foundation joined as co-sponsor,
and the name was changed to the Oxnard College Literature, Arts & Lecture Series.
Savren is looking forward to the Performing Arts opening, a venue that will allow her to expand
the series’ offerings and seating capacity to the community. Although she’s not yet revealing her
topics for spring 2011, Savren is promising some headliners for all to enjoy.
Professor Savren -- teacher, poet, author, and community organizer. The Lecture Series is
a tremendous amount of work, but Savren loves it. “It’s an integral part of Oxnard College. The
Literature, Arts & Lecture Series expands education beyond the classroom, and we have
something for everyone!”
BROOKE HANSON NAMED
ASSISTANT WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL COACH
The Oxnard College Condors hired a new Assistant Coach for the women’s volleyball program. Brooke Hanson was a four-year letter winner at
University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) where she played every position except middle blocker. Hanson made her pro beach volleyball debut
in a qualifier in Santa Barbara with Brooke Rundle, a former teammate at UCSB.
In 2007, Hanson advanced to her first three Final Fours but missed the 2008 season due to injury. Coming back stronger than ever, Hanson won the
Association of Volleyball Professionals “Best Female Defender” title. She and partner Lisa Rutledge finished the season as the fifth-ranked team and
as the best defensive duo. Hanson wound up placing ninth in individual points, her new best. Hanson returned to UCSB to become the Assistant
Coach for Women’s Volleyball from 2003-2007, under Kathy Gregory. The UCSB Gauchos won three
Big West Championships during her tenure.
Assistant Coach Hanson joins Head Coach David Fischer to make one of the best coaching tandems
around. “We feel extremely fortunate to have these two great coaches leading our budding women’s
volleyball program,” said Athletic Director Jonas Crawford. “Coach Hanson brings a wealth of professional
experience and will act as a great mentor for all of our student athletes.”
CHANCELLOR”S MESSAGE (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1)
Concurrently, we continue to face fiscal uncertainty as the state’s economic
abyss tests us as an educational institution. Despite the state’s severe budget
problems and revenue delays, VCCCD adopted a balanced budget in October
and is positioned to continue to operate efficiently and effectively as a result
of prudent fiscal planning by the Board. As we strive to achieve the Board’s
objectives adopted in June, student access and success will remain our
primary focus.
Finally, a great deal of work and activity took place at the colleges and the
District Administrative Center related to accreditation. In October, the
colleges and DAC were visited by the Accrediting Commission for Community
and Junior Colleges Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACCJC/
WASC) site evaluation teams as part of the process for reaffirmation of
accreditation. We expect to receive official findings from the evaluation teams
in February 2011. Initial feedback indicates we have work to do District-wide
as the process identified our strengths and provided recommendations
for improvement.
Accomplishing these goals will require hard work on everyone’s part.
It takes a great deal of commitment to sustain an academy where students can
learn and thrive. Together, I am confident the collaboration between faculty,
staff, and administrators will enable us to achieve our goals and much more
for our students as VCCCD becomes the best community college district in
the nation.
Looking forward to 2011, the Board of Trustees and I wish each of you a festive
holiday and peace to you, your families, and friends. We could not be more
proud of VCCCD and its employees as the colleges, DAC, and
11
students are a direct reflection of your efforts.
