ABOUT THE PROGRAMSpecializationsThe curriculum focuses on theoretical foundationsThe California Early <strong>Child</strong>hood Mentor Teacher Pro-as well as practical applications, providing studentsgram has a program at <strong>Oxnard</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Men-endeavors.<strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong> students may completethe following objectives:• To attain a <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong> Teacher• To become a Mentor Teacher or Mentor Director.• To transfer to an upper division program at a fouryearinstitution.• To complete various levels of the California <strong>Child</strong><strong>Development</strong> Matrix Permit including areas ofspecialization: Infant/Toddler, Special Needs,Bilingual/Bicultural, and Administration.Student Observation& Teaching Site:The <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong> faculty works closely withthe <strong>Oxnard</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong> Center staffto promote cooperation. The <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong>Center, located on the college campus, provides alaboratory in which college students, as future earlychildhood educators, can learn and prepare to worktor Teachers must be holding a Master Teacher Permitand submit an application that will be reviewed andapproved by the Selection Committee.Many <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong> programs in the communityare regulated by Community Care Licensing. Theyfollow Title XXII requirements for staff working in childdevelopment centers. Title XXII requires that centersserving infants and toddlers must hire teachers whohave at least 6 units of Infant/Toddler. <strong>Oxnard</strong> <strong>College</strong>provides the necessary units to meet this demand.Career OpportunitiesWith parents having increased need for child carehas dramatically increased. This has resulted in anincreased demand for a well-trained work forceof early childhood educators. The students from<strong>Oxnard</strong> <strong>College</strong> find employment in a variety ofprogram types including but not limited to:• Non-profit and For-profit <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong>Centers.• Federally Funded or State FundedThe <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong> Program is comprised of amulti-cultural, multi-racial, multi-lingual faculty andseeks to prepare a multi-cultural, multi-racial, andmulti-lingual professional workforce.with young children from toddlerhood to school age.In addition, the <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong> Program utilizesselected Mentor Teacher sites in the Community tofurther expand the learning opportunities and experiencesfor college students.
