Some like it hot. Some like it hotter.
Not Chad Lowcock. The founder of
Race City Sauce Works, Lowcock wants
you to taste the flavors in his hot sauces,
not just the heat.
“We don’t produce fun sauces. We produce
food sauces,” he says.
The company, run by Lowcock and his
wife, Becky, both 34, has been getting attention
through national awards.
Race City’s Smoked Habanero Honey
Mustard was named America’s Best Mustard,
and the ‘Revenooers’ Smoked Habanero
Pepper Jam named America’s Best
Pepper Jelly at this summer’s America’s
Best Gourmet Food Competition in Anaheim,
Calif.
Some 800 manufacturers competed
with 1,000 products.
It was a pretty good showing for a company
that’s not quite a year old and operates
in a small shopping center at Brookshire
Boulevard and Mt. Holly-Huntersville
Road, in the middle of the Mountain
Island Lake area.
Lowcock has found that just one taste –
or one bottle – of sauce keeps his customers
coming back for more.

Carolina Sauce Co. is an online retailer,
based in Durham, which sells several Race
City products.
“I also personally use these sauces at
home,” says Gloria Cabada-Leman, a Carolina
Sauce representative. “What I like
most about them is that they’re not just
about fiery heat, but rather each sauce
also has a distinctively rich and complex
flavor that’s delicious as well as spicy-hot.
“Because of their great flavor that’s expertly
balanced with peppery heat and
the use of fresh ingredients of the highest
quality, Race City Sauce Works products
will please both the foodie who’s looking
for gourmet sauces and the ‘chilehead’ or
fan of fiery foods.”
Dr. Jonathan Mitchell agrees. He’s a
senior education scientist at Research Triangle
Park, and he’s particularly a fan of
the Habanero Honey Mustard sauce.
