Health department urges residents to get seasonal flu shot CHARLOTTE – The Mecklenburg County Health Department is now taking appointments for seasonal influenza vaccinations. Health department staff will administer the seasonal flu vaccine only at immunization clinics at 249 Billingsley Road and 2845 Beatties Ford Road. Officials said swine flu vaccine information would come later. To make an appointment, call 704- 336-6500. In a press release, Dr. Wynn Mabry, Mecklenburg County health director, said seasonal flu comes from viruses different from the Novel H1N1 influenza virus that first appeared this spring. Seasonal flu happens every year, starting in the fall and lasting through spring. “While we are certainly concerned about what the H1N1 flu will bring, we must be vigilant when it comes to seasonal influenza,” Mabry said. Groups at “higher risk” of complications from seasonal influenza include people 65 and older, children younger than 5, pregnant women and anyone with chronic medical conditions. Each year, close to 36,000 deaths occur from the seasonal flu, Mabry said. For more information about the flu and protecting yourself and your family, go to www.meckhealth.org. q Park and Rec’s “Get Going Guide” available The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department is now distributing 115,000 copies of its fall/winter Get Going Guide, a magazine that lists recreation programs, classes, facilities and hundreds of indoor and outdoor activities. The Get Going Guide is a resource for: • Finding free or inexpensive fun and fitness activities • Joining sports leagues and competition for youngsters and adults • Getting outside on beautiful fall days • Discovering classes and activities at recreation and nature centers • Participating in swim lessons and aquatic recreation • Encouraging kids to be active on out-of school days. The Park and Recreation Department is distributing 67,000 copies of the colorful illustrated magazine this week through Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary schools. Copies will also be available at recreation centers, nature centers, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, branch libraries, Park and Recreation’s administrative office and selected news boxes around the city.
